in Second Life - is the central server model its downfall? on The Metaverse Journal
To me, the fact that the whole internet will be 3D in a matter of years is a complete certainty. Just as certain to me is that Second Life won't be the application that will "make it" - there are so many more issues with it than "just" the unbearable lag when building up a screen: very poor usability for one, difficult and annoying navigability another.
I am however also happy about Second Life as people finally start thinking about the next stage of the internet, past the mere 2-dimensional display.
As soon as somebody comes up with a better 3D space than Second Life, I will be gone. I agree with Eloise though, we would need the same types of freedom in such a new space.

in Four Corners on SL: it’s good, bad AND ugly on The Metaverse Journal
I only saw bits and pieces of the program but will watch it later on on the web. However, it seems to have made a big impact: at my university, I received over a dozen emails asking me for advice on Second Life in general. Kind of frustrating, because I've been talking about it for over 6 months now, and nobody took me seriously.
It seems that the hype (and yes, I use this word deliberately) has now reached a stage where Second Life is becoming the new buzzword after YouTube and MySpace. I am absolutely convinced that the future of the internet lies in 3D technology, but I am just as convinced that it won't be Second Life that makes it in the end, there are just way too many unresolved usability and performance issues, and as soon as somebody else solves them, people will leave SL.

in Logan Linden Interview - Part 2 on The Metaverse Journal
Lowell, I really appreciate that you stated to him that Australian numbers were indeed pretty low. Please correct me if I am wrong, but Chris' answer sounded a little evasive to me, a bit like a boxing promoter justifying why his champion was just knocked out...
I know that Second Life is going in the right direction in terms of 3Dweb (yes, let me coin that term here and now), but I just don't see it there yet. Many of my friends and colleagues have joined the community and then left it again due to usability frustrations. Therefore, no surprise that numbers are low: by the way, not only Australian numbers, I find the global community itself tiny, too. I am a dedicated World of Warcraft player, and there are 8 million of us, all actively playing.
Hopefully, Linden Lab can get their acts together and fix the poor performance, otherwise I don't see it going the distance.

in University of Southern Queensland is first Australian University presence on The Metaverse Journal
Hello,
I've been looking for the Terra Incognita island for quite some time now, but to no avail... The search yields it as a result under "places" but I fail to then track it down when I have teleported to the place... any help?
