in Should The Republicans Fear Obama? on Captain's Quarters Comments
I think the best thing for the Republicans would be if the Dems run either Obama or Clinton.
You've got to figure that at least 5% of potential voters won't vote for a woman or a black man. Unless the election is a total blowout that may be enough to tip it in our favor.

Teresa So, in other words, Republicans are sexist and racist?
essucht's picture
essucht I think Obama gets more votes for being black then he loses. There are alot more independents/moderates who'd vote for him sheerly based on race then against him, IMO.

Hillary thought, I don't see her winning very many independent/moderate males in a general election.

in Richardson: We Must Force Musharraf Out Of Power on Captain's Quarters Comments
Actually Richardson is merely espousing the Bush Doctrine. Remember, we're not going to support dictators anymore?
It was ridiculous when Bush said it and it comes as no surprise that Democrats would pick up on it.

unclesmrgol's picture
unclesmrgol Ah, but he espoused it when even Bush isn't going anywhere near it.

And the "Bush Doctrine" wasn't ridiculous when we found that Russia, France, and Germany, the three biggest boat anchors for action in Iraq, were suborning the UN sanctions and profiting from Saddam's behavior. There was never going to be a consensus, because it was not in the national interests of the other parties to have one.

As mad as I get at politics in this country, something like this reminds me that it could be far worse.

I'm sure he was speaking figuratively, and probably comparing their forces to ours and the Israelis. I don't know much about their army, but their air force is a joke.

in A Market Free Of Consequences Is Not Free on Captain's Quarters Comments
I can't believe how anyone who calls him or herself a Conservative can agree with the government getting involved in this manner. There are two types of people who got caught with their pants down in this market: the greedy ones who were either speculating or pulled equity out of their houses to buy boats etc. and the truly ignorant who didn't understand the terms of their loans.
No amount of government intervention will help the second group, but losing a home is good lesson for those who fall in the first category.

in Sistani: Ich Bin Ein Sunni on Captain's Quarters Comments
The Shiite/Sunni split is a thousand years old. I'd be surprised if one cleric's fatwa could end it.

MrMichael This might not end the divide between the various interpretations of the Faith, no... but it will strip any pretense of "Holy War" from any of the inter-sect combatants. Feel free to disagree, have fun debating the finer points of who is Holier than thou, but if you Kill a fellow Muslim, even/especially a Sunni, you are an offense to Islam.

I think that this will have more of an effect on the Sunni than the Shiite, reassuring them that any fighting is not driven by Religious Dictat. It's a big step, man.

"I'd like to take a moment to fantasize a little bit about what would Reagan do upon declaring Iran to be part of the evil axis?"

I liked Reagan a lot (voted for him twice) but to fantasize that he could do something other than what Bush has in this situation is pure bunk. Remember Lebanon in '83?

AH_C's picture
AH_C I remember of course, but that's before we understood what the islamofascists were about. Our greatest enemy at the time was the USSR and he declared them the evil empire as he to stared them down.

In any case, I was referring in the context of negotiations and how everyone got to hand wringing when Reagan also came to the table with specific shopping lists. Remember Reykjavik? ;) Solana would quail at the thot of leaving the table if he didn't get what he wanted, saying, "call me when you're ready to get serious!"

I think propaganda can be art: look at the grandaddy of 'em all- Casablanca. Love the movie even though it's pretty blatant.

America has indeed picked up where the British left off and will end up the same way: bankrupt. We've got the worst of the traditional empire (namely the costs) but reap none of the benefits.

unclesmrgol's picture
unclesmrgol I don't feel bankrupt, not anywhere near. We consume things from all around the world, which brings up an interesting point: the totally artificial fall of the dollar has a bright side. There may well be a lot more stuff made in America now that the cost of importing it from overseas has just gone up. It's as if our government just levied a large tariff on every object produced overseas.
Otter And one of the heaviest weights dragging us down will be all the entitlements that so many people should not be entitled to. Not to mention all the Special protections that so many minority groups (read: anyone willing to vote for a Dhimmicrat so long as they get what they want at everyone else's expense), should not have.

in Iraqis Offer Long-Term Security Partnership on Captain's Quarters Comments
Interesting. I wonder what we'd be bound to do if Maliki dissolves parliament and declares himself "Dictator for Life"?
Ray_in_MPLS It's my guess that we'd "be bound to" whoever the Iraqi people elect to replace him after he is arrested and tried for treason. You may not be aware of this, but the Iraqi people are tired of tyrants and dictators. This proposal is another example that they are willing to work together, and with us, to bring long term peace and stability to their country.
Otter I don't recall that peanut carter liked him, so it seems very unlikely.

The media isn't losing this war anymore than they lost Vietnam (and I was drafted in that one). Both were ill advised adventures started by men who had never seen combat. The only question now is how many more soldiers you want to lose before you declare victory and get out.
