While I don't agree with the strength of your argument, it wasn't one that I found convincing so much as interesting. It does feel like a retrofit job though, doesn't it? Still...it's a good read, a different way of looking at the 'problem', and strikes me as having a bit of truth.

Re: funky day

that's too bad...I thought it might be a weekly tune-in for me. One of the earlier arguments against spam was that it levees the cost of advertisement onto the advertisee though. This is not as apparently true in this time of aol and netzero static pricing, but we still do pay a price. And in other countries where the internet is not as prevalent there is a more noticable bandwidth and cost issue.
3) true, amazingly
4) I agree completely. Mostly. I don't recall cold-calls to the effect, do you enjoy candlelight dinners? Well, how about sticking a candle...? Really. I used to work as abusemaster (best title ever!) for an ISP, which is where I got many of my views on spam. There were some people who would go through the trouble of forwarding all of their spam to me. All five per day.
So I'm in agreement about the elitistness of the anti-spam movement. Honestly, I believe that unsolicited email is one of the great instruments that could be used by small businesses to compete with the conglomerates. Unfortunately, as it stands now it is horribly targeted. Sending viagra ads to kids, penis enlargement ads to lesbians, spam is totally without prejudice.
The reason that people don't get worked up about a large visible company sending mail is that they know that they most likely signed up for it. Also, there's some assurance that a request to be removed will be honored. On the other hand, there are so many scams and false ads, the nobodies out there are damaged because of tactics like using unsubscribe lists to verify email addresses.

Re: pink meat product

I had never gotten blog spam before yesterday...oh, maybe a few here and there, but holy crap, this is frickin outrageous. I happened upon them again this evening and was pleased to find Stone's Ruination (double) IPA added to their tap list. Holy crap that's a good beer. But anyway, I'd recommend hitting the bar to make your beer orders for the time being, they are very knowledgable about beers and more than happy to offer up samples. Also, I had a burger there last week, the firehouse or something, and it was f'ing fantastic. The service wasn't bad either...like I said, a few wrinkles, but well intentioned.

Re: Everyday Wine

cool! Of course we can always debate whether taking boarded up shops and turning them into nice places is a bad thing. Also, the WW really pissed me off in their Finder, because that's all they talked about in reference to Alberta (I think they've maybe made some amends in the latest issue but I haven't read it), with this classic statement (roughly) -- 'what kind of diversity is it to have Earl's barbershop next to a make your own pottery place' . Well if you have to ask that question you're a friggin moron and should go back to being a sophomore because you were probably a better writer then. I'm not worried about others accessing your files by sitting down at the computer, but more about your computer accessing files on your computer, or you accessing your files without realizing it. Give them a shot, you won't be disappointed! I tried to be clear where an app might require a bit more of a learning curve.

Open source applications have made huge strides over the last several years, as commercial office apps have been experiencing diminishing returns. Look at what's happenened to radio. Insufficient regulation has led to massive consolidation of stations into a tiny handful of parent corporations (primarily Viacom and Clear Channel).

Maybe it would be a bit easier to stomach with a sports analogy. Sports have rules. Say football, which has tons of them. The rules exist for many reasons, but primarily they exist to promote competition. If they broke Peyton Manning's knee every time he stepped on the field, or if the Raiders put 150 receivers on the field, it wouldn't be very competitive.

And we need to pay the referee to show up and blow the whistle.

Monopolies are the outcome of deregulation, and they are the antithesis of competition. Just like cultural anarchy, economic anarchy is a beautiful ideal but one that cannot be successful on any but the smallest of scales.

Re: I broke my wrist

It really took this to convince you? btw...I think I saw you driving south shortly before the event.

Re: Full Sail LTD Limited Light Lager

I'm pleased with it. Session is aptly named, and suits me when I'm in the mood for a commodity beer. The LTD is a pleasant lager, a lot less dry than a european pilsner, and pretty drinkable.

I also think it's a timely move for them in Oregon's competitive brewing industry. Session was well-positioned after Olympia short-sightedly discontinued their stubbies, and it paved the way for additional lagered efforts.

Without the lagers, I feel that Full Sail was falling beihind. Their ales don't stand out much among all the newer breweries, though we all seem to have at least one Full Sail old standby.

So it's a good move, though I'm with you and like the Oregon norm. It's nice to be able to step outside it.

Re: still light

It's off. They have them all over Europe and in places in NYC. But that's not really feasible right now, since for some reason people complain even about their tax money going to the paint necessary to create bike paths.

I feel that I'm against the grain on compaints about cyclists "running" stop signs and red lights. I do not think that is the problem, and I would bet that only a tiny fraction of bike-related incidents are a result of this. Stop signs should work like yield signs, and stoplights should work like stop signs.

My feeling is that bikes are more like pedestrians than cars, since that's where they reside on the kill or be killed scale. In a similar vein, I feel that slow moving bicycles on busy roads have no place there. In other words, don't impede traffic unless it's necessary.

Re: Imagine this

well look who's back...and hitting the ground running I see.

Re: Further adventures of the Kentucky Colonel

I like Ricky just fine. funny you just dropped by, I was over on yours just now.

Re: Winter beerfest

yeah, I got there at 5pm yesterday, and it was packed.
