in That's Only Ten Lines Of Code on A VC
I usually use it for sharing a link that I'll use a lot - for example I snagged bit.ly/michael awhile back which points to my site. It's much easier to share that then spell out my ridiculously difficult last name each time.

On another note, I built a url shortener - and while it's a bit more than 10 lines it wasn't that difficult. http://urli.ca

I didn't build it to compete with the tinyurl's and bit.ly's of the world - but just to see what people are sharing. We only get maybe 20 urls shortened a day, if that, but it's a form of entertainment for me. I have a simple script that lists out the most popular links and I always find something new each and every day.

I'd really love it bit.ly came out with a link blog/delicious-type app that lists out popular urls based on click throughs and other metrics (ie. most popular shared links on twitter today, etc). Digg and other sites are useful, but Twitter is a much better place to find interesting information nowadays. I'm no longer bookmarking urls or blogging them, I prefer to twitter them - instant feedback on whatever you post and the same type of karma/recognition if you found something first and someone re-tweets it or gives you credit for finding it.

fredwilson I'm with you on all of this. That's why I told one of the commenters to think of bit.ly as delicious not tinyurl

in One Thing You Don't Need To Be An Entrepreneur: A College Degree on A VC
I think you mis-read my comment. Nowhere did I state that I'm too good for college. And I am far from a genius, I'll be the first to admit that.

I just don't think it's the right thing for me at this point in time. And as I said in my comment, I may change my mind in a year. I was looking at some local colleges today and saw some web application development courses that I'm interested in taking (mostly for pleasure).

alain94040 Mike,

Let me tell you my story. If you relate to it, maybe you can use some of it to your advantage.

I graduated from high school at 16. I was a nationally published author of software at the time. I was so far ahead of any computer education that undergrad college could provide, it was pretty clear that college would be just a long, painful repetition of stuff I already knew.

For a large part, it was. All the technical details of programming, I already knew better than the professor. But somehow, I matured.

Skip forward 10 years. College was a very useful experience. It only improved my programming marginally (what you'd call Internet skills). I successfully argued with my professor that dynamic languages are a mistatake (he invented them :-).

But somehow I learned a lot. About people, about projects, about dealing with others, etc.

Are you sure you have all those skills? My best advice: pursue both your own ventures in parallel with college. Don't just be an average student who shows up for classes and does little else. But unless you are the truly unique, don't skip college entirely.

I understand that it's a great place to connect with others, but it's not the only place. At the moment I'd have a hard time getting into a college with my grades - they've slipped over the past 2 years while I've been working on companies, selling sites, etc. I'm hovering around the C+ mark with a 2.5/3.0 GPA.

I connect in person with a lot of other entrepreneurs locally, meetups, grabbing coffee, etc. I'm not denying that college would be beneficial, it's just that in the time I would need to upgrade my marks to get into college I could be hustling, working on my projects, meeting new people and everything else.

All I'm saying is that college isn't the right thing for me at this exact moment in my life. Maybe I'll change my mind in a year.. who knows?

alain94040 Well, you could go to college and keep doing what you are doing right now on the side. College gives you a lot of freedom to explore and pursue side projects if you want to.

I'm not advocating that college will make smart people that have no drive, but in your case, I'm just nervous that you may end up like a few entrepreneurs I have seen: a diamond in the rough.

It's great to have a high opinion of yourself ("I'm too good for college"). I was a genius once too (or so I thought). And then I expanded my horizons and now I know better.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada. If you know any startups nearby that you can connect me with I'd be very grateful.

I'm not going to list my email here (hate spam) - but I'm at http://twitter.com/yurechko - I'm following you so you can always DM me, thanks :)

I'm 17 years old and I'm not going to college. All my friends are freaking going out "well, what are you going to do if you're not going university?!"

I am currently busy working on a couple projects, including a Mac app and a few different sites. I have been working online for the past 3 years (mostly freelance writing - and in the last year direct ad sales/internet marketing and now freelance SEO work) and know what it takes to make a living.

I have been floating it in my head about going back to school, but I don't see the immediate reward. I do enjoy learning, but I like to teach myself or learn from others close to me (local meetups with other entrepreneurs, sites like Hacker News, etc).

I've also had a couple interviews, and have a few more coming up, in regards to working at local startups/web companies (some are internships, others start at about $40k/yr Canadian).

At this point in my life, f**k school. I may go back one day, but for now I'm going to gamble. If I fall on my ass I'm still 17 and live at home - no problem starting over.

Dropbox offers an online web-interface, but a full-blown app would rock. At the moment I don't do any cloud-syncing/streaming with my iPhone, I do use AirSharing to put word docs/files on my phone.

I need this case because I'll be giving my first gen iPhone to my sister and definitely want a case on it because she won't be keeping it and I don't want it back in 1,000 pieces when she accidentally drops it (which WILL happen). Thinking of throwing an invisible shield on the thing too...

Of course Fido would be carrying it as well, Rogers bought Fido awhile back. It's the same company, using the same network.

I've heard a contract termination is like $400 or so depending on phone/contract. I don't know if I can afford that, plus $200 phone, plus $100/month.. But I will probably have to if I want the iPhone.

I signed a new 3 year contract last August, I'm hoping Rogers allows me to upgrade, because I got a pretty shitty phone ($80 sony ericcson).

in Rogers iPhone 3G Pricing to Be Similar to AT&T in the USA? on iPhone in Canada - Tips and Tricks for Canadians iPhone Users
Sorry to take this off topic a bit, but does anyone know if Rogers will be letting you upgrade. If not, the price it normally costs to kill one of their current contracts?

in Rogers iPhone 3G Pricing to Be Similar to AT&T in the USA? on iPhone in Canada - Tips and Tricks for Canadians iPhone Users
I'm a sad sad person, and I will be cancelling my current Rogers contract and buying the iPhone with a new contract. The things I do for that shiny shiny Apple gear and unlimited data...

$100/month is quite a bit... but I don't really have another choice at the moment. There is no other way to get the unlimited data, and the iPhone isn't really worth having unless you have data. If you are stuck with Wifi, you may as well get a touch.

in 10 Misconceptions the Self-Employed Deal With Daily on LifeDev
My personal favourite is: "that's easy, I could do that"

A lot of the time, yes, that person may be capable. But even more of the time, I can tell that person would not succeed. Making money by working online is not easy, and its been said time and time again that 99%+ of people who try to work online will fail.

From your post I really enjoyed 'You work in pajamas, don't brush your teeth, and never see the sun"

I have to be honest, there are days where I'm like this, but most of the time I am not. The reason I may do this more than others is because I'm working online part time - as I still have school to attend. So there will always be a 'lazy Sunday' or some other time in there.

Anyways, loved the post. Definitely subscribed! *will only read AFTER I get my work done* ;)

I think Facebook will change and since they have the user base and "REAL" america will continue using Facebook.

But there will always be twitter, which will continue growing, and be more prominent in the tech niche and with us 'geeks'.

Just my 2 cents.

btw. Gary, follow me on twitter :) @michaelyurechko (my name is linked to it on this comment)

in What My Kids Tell Me About The Future of Media on A VC
I'm 16 and you're almost on the money with the list.

Movies/TV
I go to the theater for major releases or movies which have great trailers and I just HAVE to see. If not, I'll wait it out and download the movies. If I enjoy it, I'll likely pickup the DVD, if not I'll just delete it and move on with my life.

Music
I tend to get new music from other bloggers, friends, and Last.fm. When I say friends, I mean my friend Alec ( http://alecfeld.com ) who eats, sleeps, and breathes music.

Internet
I spend anywhere from 2 to 12 hours on the internet on any given day. Why? Well for one, I work online. But for the most part it's because I can stay entertained for hours for cheap. I can go to YouTube and watch a few videos, chat with friends, catchup on my RSS feeds or even get work done. Being a blogger, I find writing to be fun, interesting, and rewarding ($$ :D) - Though, I am anti-facebook. Big social networks that try to do everything annoy me. I like last.fm, digg, etc. but I do not spend hours upon hours on each, and I tend to use them for their main purpose (news, new music, whatever it may be, but I don't spend time each day messaging friends and writing on their profiles).

Books/Magazines
I do enjoy books and love to read, but most books don't get me engaged enough so i find myself going back to my RSS feeds if a book doesn't grab my attention from the start. Magazines on the other hand, I hate. I don't know what it is, but I think its something to do with the news being out of date. I work as a tech blogger for apple and gadget sites and the news found in magazines annoys me - since it's usually weeks or months out of date.

Paying for content.
Everyone thinks teens pirate everything. Not all do, but most download stuff. For example, I pirate everything. I use bit torrent and usenet a lot and download tons of content. If I enjoy the content, I go out and purchase it. Radiohead really got this idea from the start with In Rainbows. I downloaded the CD for free from their website, and loved it. So just last week I ran out and picked up the CD. The thing that bothers me is that most artists make little money from album sales, and make the most through concerts. So if Radiohead is ever in Vancouver, touring In Rainbows, you can bet that I'll be there.
