One metric Google pioneered was 'dwell' which measured how long each user spent on a website before coming back to the Google results page and clicking another link - the thinking was that the less time you spent on a page the less relevant the info there was to your original query - and so Google down-rated that site slightly against similar queries. Obviously it worked in reverse for 'good' sites.

Altho it's limited to resident's use of the Search system the advantage of prioritising that kind of measurement in SL is that it would pretty much filter out spam-bot-searches and camping, rendering them useless and leaving a much more accurate set of figures.

They can do all sorts of smart things to measure inworld activity, the current traffic head-count is certainly an outdated blunt instrument. Depends which Google features they paid for and intend to switch on i guess... :-)

Re: Video of SL5B opening speech

I can't escape the feeling that Philip has hired the one person Second Life didn't need - himself.

They sound like best friends, popped from the same pod - but didn't we need fresh ideas and not more management perpetually trapped in Casual Friday?

Re: Microsoft’s paws on OpenSim?

You're certainly not the only one - and that's why they'll fail to implement this.

They tried the same trick before on the web with Microsoft Passport (now re-branded LiveID) and it failed miserable, no-one except M$ used it.

That's not to say the idea is without merit but never if M$ is in charge of it. The most obvious flaw in their plan is that this is really one of Linden Lab's future plans - to be the glue that binds virtual worlds together - and they're years ahead of M$. The day to REALLY worry is when LL sell The Grid to M$ and I wish that was less likely than it is.

Re: Future freedom loss creeps up unawares?

I think we all have to recognise the difference between Second Life and The Grid that contains it. Linden probably need to mainstream The Grid to make it more attractive to business and education because the 'be-bop' nature of SL is NEVER going to work for those groups. I don't care how positive a spin they try to put on what's already happening in SL, education and business needs a different kind of virtual space and aren't really going to take virtual worlds seriously until they get it.

The Grid could give them that and could leave SL as the huge imagination-playground it already is. Think of Second Life as the capitol city of virtual worlds - a huge virtual melting-pot with room for all kinds of self-expression. As someone else has said - Second Life should be the Manhattan of virtual worlds. The best shopping, the most amazing places to live, the best clubs, a bohemian quarter, the cutting-edge designers, etc etc...

Why do Linden have to make an either/or choice when they can have the best of both virtual worlds?
