Simply by observing the most successful FB, apps of the last 6 months, launch partners have a wealth of choices for Bebo app development.

Re: Are SocialAds Less Effective Than Search?

Nick,

Excellent post - this is a topic that deserves more research and reporting.

When I tabulate results from a statistically significant collection of data from our own campaigns, I'll send it your way.. should make for some interesting reporting.

Re: Forced Invites Get Shutdown

It's a very good thing for the platform, long-term, and much better for general FB user experience.

I disagree that invites should be removed altogether. Users will simply ask for some sort of invitation mechanism for apps they find very engaging. I.e., the demand for an invitation system would arise very quickly. Evidence for this is provided by apps which collect user feedback asking for more invitations per day, and more vectors for evangelism, rather than for fewer.

Have an app that's very engaging, fun, and adds value to the FB experience and the problem of intrusive and inappropriate invites will diminish significantly, perhaps to the point of (statistically speaking) the problem going away.

The current problem with invites is not the invites themselves, or the invitation/request system. The current problem is, and the invites "crisis" is caused by, a tremendous failure of imagination by many application developers.

Re: Are Games the Future of Facebook?

They're very probably a major part of FB's future, but not it's end-game as a platform/product. But they'll be big - especially since, in the words of Chris Crawford, "Games are frequently used (especially by adults) as social lubricants. The game itself is of minor importance to the players; its real significance is its function as a focus around which an evening of socializing will be built."

Social networks are perfect places for this to occur; I expect to see more games built for FB and the other social nets that serve this particular motivitation to play.

Customers could give a damn about what technology is better, or what's "more open". Customers go with what they feel is better. If it feels good, it is good; cool games feel good, and perhaps cool games across networks feel even better.

We'll see , and probably soon, with the recently announced initiatives by Zynga and SGN.

Re: 2008/02/17/facebook-app-developer-talks-customers/

I posted some of this over at Inside Facebook, but it bears repeating IMO:

Absolutely! Not only should developers constantly read their application wall and review boards, but also regularly solicit customers for feedback via the updates and other communication channels in FB.

As you start to gain a core set of customers, which include especially the “evangelical” fans & customers, ask them for feedback and begin the conversation about your product. Getting them involved in your application is essentially inviting them to take some level ownership of the app, and therefore some level of emotional investment in what it is you are, in reality, creating together.

I encourage all developers to consider, plan, and implement excellent customer service from launch-day forward. Respond quickly, and make your customers a part of your team. Let them know they’re a part of the team, and that they input is important. Which, of course, it is.

* http://apps.facebook.com/threewords/
