in And The Winner Is… | EPL Talk on EPL Talk
guess what michael?? i agree!!! nice one!!!

some choose to criticize his lack of activity in the transfer market and create all kinds of conspiracy theories about the club. i actually admire what i see as his policy to make do without rather than compromise and bring in players that aren't right for the squad.

that said, with a few more players like mellberg due to leave this summer, o'neill has only one priority and that's to bring in players!!

however, after the season we've had this year we're certainly in a stronger position to bring in quality!!

in Cardiff City Should Be Allowed into the UEFA Cup on EPL Talk
the welsh clubs play in the english league as guests and do so under the agreement that they can not represent the english FA in european competition.

that's not the case everywhere, but it is the case here and everyone knew that going in. maybe that needs to be reviewed for next time, but it smacks a bit of wanting their cake and eating it right now.

in Manager of the Year on EPL Talk
@TheScout... if you're considering signings from last season, like ashley young, no wonder you don't appreciate how little martin o'neill has spent this campaign.

still 5 games to go and i've a feeling we'll end up with the best points haul for many years. it looks like we're about to have our best attendances for more than 50 years too. there's tons of other great things happening at villa park of which MON is an integral part.

keane spent about 40 million which looks like will be enough to avoid going back down. rumour has it he'll be spending another 50 million this summer, let's hope with that level of spend he's judged a bit more objectively next time.

according to the bbc redknapp's almost doubled the playing staff at fratton park this year sending the wage bill to more than 30 million. the club just recorded a loss of 23 million. i'm not going to mention the legal problems. still, he's reached an FA cup and has done well in the league.

in Totally Frank About His Contract on EPL Talk
interesting question... i guess we find out about frank's ambition as a footballer now. personally, i think he'll negotiate a fat contract and coast out his career at chelsea.

in The Politics of Football: The Premier League Against UEFA and FIFA on EPL Talk
great post, couldn't agree more.

i just don't ever see the likes of robinho strutting their stuff in the EPL though. you could bring in enough money. you could change the english game to suit their style more. but you'll never change the english weather and somehow messi, boxing day and england aren't words that sit together very well!!

in Premier League Considers Allowing Clubs to Play Matches Overseas on EPL Talk
I think your second bullet point is inevitable; lower league sport, any sport, will never attract global interest to even a fraction of a degree of the top flight. That said, I have seen the odd Championship game and even lower teams in FA Cup action on FSC & Setanta... the same can't be said of the Spanish, Italian or French lower league clubs.

Your first and third points are variations on the same theme and while I suspect you're correct to a degree, I wonder whether the fans you mention are in the majority or not? What we're talking about is a club playing 18 instead of 19 home games. OK, so my club goes overseas for 1 game and raises the profile and revenue for the club... you'd have to be pretty small-minded to think that's a bad thing, no? And maybe, just maybe, with only 18 home games to sell seats for we'll see less empty seats in the stadiums.

in Following Premiership Players in the African Cup of Nations on EPL Talk
Yeah, I'd definitely like to watch a game or two from this tournament... the African teams are always a breath of fresh air in the World Cup with their fearless attacking style.... can you imagine a whole tournament of these teams??!?!

You've also made me recall an article I read in one paper or another back in the UK when Wenger was getting all bent out of shape about losing Kanu to this tournament. The writer poked fun at Wenger saying that Kanu had "come over all Nigerian" as if Wenger didn't know this was going to happen. Simple fact; if you buy a decent African footballer then you're likely to lose him for a month every two years. If you don't like that, don't buy them. Simple.

in New 08/09 Portsmouth Away Shirt Revealed | EPL Talk on EPL Talk
Played the '08 version (Worldwide Soccer Manager as it's known on this side of the water) for about a day and have gone back to the '07 version as there's too many bugs for my liking. Maybe when a decent patch is out I'll have another look, but for me the enhancements from '07 to '08 aren't worth the irritating bugs... getting sacked completely out the blue, despite decent results, really does leave you feeling like you've completely wasted all those lost hours you've spent playing.
