I agree with Paul. It's a matter of amount of investments There are a lot of VC investing money, but all of them are investing in something you can "touch with your hands" and most of them in services/applications which people are using. The problem, to me, is that not always you can find a business model which works. So, maybe you can find someone who is willing to pay (a big company ?) so you can sell to that company, but not always you find people who are willing to pay for the service you are offering.

The point is another one. It's pretty common that a news hits the top of Techmeme NOT because the news itself, but because there is a "popular" person that does something, even if this "something" is nothing special. Instead of paying a developer to do that, he hires who already did it. Nothing special actually, but I learnt that news are driven by people and a often a news IS important if people make it important (bloggers, journalists etc.). You are a journalist, I think I'm not telling you anything new.

Rich, I would appreciate your comments on Hictu! too. I see you Twitter messages and RSS posts on Hictu everyday, and wonder why you don't post directly (even if I can imagine..). On Hictu! people are starting new ways to communicate and others are creating a daily videoblog, something that on Twitter you can't do.
But, you are right, Twitter have people. If someone would start moving from Twitter to Hictu or other services like that, people can be lost really quickly... Let's see when this "tipping point" will occurr.

You can do this with TweetDeck... You can create a tab which shows only tweets containing certain keywords.. you can even have one per keyword. Less intrusive, IMHO.

I agree with you Jorge. Apple usually doesn't protect their customers. They launch a new product and an upgrade a few months after. Think of the Apple TV: a first model for $299 with only 40GB hdd, then, two months later, a 160GB version for $399. Why not at the same time? For iPhone I'm pretty sure to see the same story.

I don't always need a social network. I like Linkedin and Plaxo, they are useful and they offer me a real benefit. I use it a lot of times. With Facebook, I can do so many things... but I don't have time to. I even don't like too many messages coming from there. In addition, I dont' want to spend time recreating my list of friends etc. In a few words: not enough time for so many social networks.

The fact that they got funded is not relevant for me. There are tons of services that got funded but it doesn't mean they are great for users and that they are safe. Remember that 1 or 2 services are successful out of 10 funded by a VC.

It's just a matter of firmware, so in terms of the software installed. Take a look into the application folder... you should find a couple of applications like Flickr and Gizmo project.

It's up to you, if you use Safari it improves Gmail's user experience, really poor on that browser. I agree that Firefox, with extensions like Better Gmail, is better. Anyway, this is the only app that let's you use Gmail as a standalone app and, if you use it more, you will find a couple of benefits that make its installation worth.

Lelego, you make some good points. I mentioned the video call and VoIP capabilities in my post, of course. Java and Flash are must-have, but office applications are really not that good on the N800. I use it everyday and still not completely satisfied of those applications.

You know, in Italy also FON is not allowed by local laws. Anyone who wants to offer free Wifi access needs to identify any user who tries to access to their network. Ian, I understand your point but when I have something "real" that is working well on my mobile phone and everything is working like those guys promise, I can't call it vaporware. The cubic telecom website will be up and running soon and I'm pretty sure that those phones will be available as promised. Anyway, the Pirelli phone is not mandatory to use maxroam, any other phone works. If dual mode, even better.

no, I was using my italian SIM. In most indoors places it was not working fine and I think the problem was the 1900, since to higher frequencies correspond worse indoor coverage.

Aswath, I never used Yahoo IM neither MSN, but I use their networks in other clients. If this is a network capability, it's a very good thing which I was not aware of, if instead it's only a proprietary client to client feature, it's not enough. I'll try Yahoo on my mac and see if they provide what I mean. Thanks

I know that Aperture is not written with Cocoa, but I read about professional photographers using a 3Ghz Mac Pro that still experienced an increased speed. I'm not a PRO, so for me a new hw is not worth it. I'm now using Lightroom and think it's the right choice for getting better performances.

Robert, this is not a general review of VoIP services, but a review of services that could solve the use-case problem I mentioned at the beginning of the post. So I'm not stating here, let's say, that Rebtel is better than Jajah or that Mobivox is worse than Talkster etc., but I just compared those services in terms of what I needed. Jajah has many features that were not considered and I didn't consider services like Skype that couldn't solve my problem.

Dennis I think you are right. I'm now using a T-Mobile SIM card and it works much better. I was surely using 1900 with AT&T; and with higher frequency indoor coverage is really bad too.

I totally agree. A person told me he was interested to buy the N95, but mine was the first one he could see (he was happy for that). WalMart, Costco etc. are the right places to engage the "normal" people.

I think that reliability of SMS in italy is evident, as well as in any other part of Europe (to my knowledge, in any EU contry), even for country to country SMS traffic. But, I agree with you, I already noticed that it is much different in the US. In particular if you have to connect to global wholesale SMS providers that use don't use the most reliable channels to deliver them. But, I can assure you, SMS has been and still is one of the biggest success in Europe in the field of mobile communications. Ciao

Tim, thanks for getting back to me here. I don't really mean from the technological point of view, but from the business and user experience standpoint. My company, and many other companies, have developed this technology (with phone, without phone, in java, with activex, for browsers etc.) years ago and improved during the past years. What about your business model? It's all about how you are going to use your services. Social networks are a great target (here is my presentation at VON 2006 about web voip for social networks http://www.slideshare.net/filosnet/von-2006-ind...) but what about making money? Are you going to do what Jangl, to name one, is already doing very well?

@David Yes, it's not really apples to apples, but by installing the proper WP plugins, you can do much more. Moreover, there are plugins that let you customize the service more and do also what Aswath is mentioning here.

I said it's ONE OF THE REASONS. It's clear that you make your choice according to what you need and what can REALLY offer you all the features you are looking for.

In addition, there are also other components like speed and so on. Both apps are fantastic, I've been using Aperture for a while and what led me to switch to Lightroom is described here: http://www.lucafiligheddu.com/2007/12/aperture-...

I will give Aperture another try, but I am not willing to move from one to another continuously :-) In addition, I found great LR manuals from professional photographers, something more difficult to find (the good ones) for Aperture.

Sergio, VC are mainly driven by a clear goal: making money. Think of this: they invest in 10 companies but they already know that they will get back, hopefully, 10 (not a great deal) to 100 (not bad) times the amount they invested by selling one or two of those companies. The other 8 shut down. So the market will tell them they have been wrong 8 times but one or two of the companies they investe in were worth the risk. And they will go on acting this way. It works.

@Dean - I mean, the SIM must provide you with the lowest rate for a local call, regardless the country you are visiting. The address book provides the right local number for your contact, then the SIM does the rest (plus the service that connects the foreign number, of course, like Rebtel or something).

@Dean of course when I say "the SIM", I mean the operator's HLR ;-) I don't think you can't ignore the operator owning the SIM, the rate to call the local number is set by tha SIM's owner, you can't avoid it unless you use native VoIP, something I would not recommend for various reasons

Jim, can't agree more. Lots of services close down because they are ahead of their time. But, I still don't think video communication will take off in the next 10 years. There is a lack of need... it's something for a very little niche and it is not enough to be a critical mass.

The solution that is closer to my idea is the one recently launched by Funambol and Jajah, but it works in Italy only and it makes sense for italians calling abroad very often. What you say about the virtual IMSI is the right answer.

I'm not with Skype. I'm not saying their layers were wrong, but sometimes you need to stop and think carefully of what you are going to do.

There are TONS of websites that have a BIG BRAND on their title/domain name. "Ring Nokia", "Apple Gazette", "SkypeJournal", "Google Operating System"... and many, many others. Any of them do a great job for the correspondent company, with great passion. Those companies must be really happy about that.

Looking forward to people like Jan in order to discuss, comment and promote, with passion, my company's products ;-)

Robert, I've just been told about a new service, YOWTrip, that at first sight seems to be much better than Dopplr. I've tried it and I can say that it's really made for worldwide travelers. Dopplr is more business oriented, while YOWTrip is more focused on getting people together during a trip. You can basically do the same Dopplr does, but much more features are available. Take a look, the develoepr behind it will be happy about that: http://www.yowtrip.com.
To be honest, I've been using Dopplr for a while and the value it actually brought to me was not that much so far.
