It's funny how the Mac and Windows product feature set seems to be diverging - does Skype 2.8 Beta for OSX incorporate this new codec?

in Adobe Flash gets a break in war against Silverlight on Scobleizer
Robert, you do realize that "indexing Silverlight content" is just XML parsing - it's no challenge for Google to index Silverlight content, and I'm sure they will and/or already can. After all, it's just text ...

The reason why indexing Adobe Flash content is a "big deal" is due to their stupid file format.

This isn't "Adobe gets a leg up on Microsoft" news. This is "Google ensures Adobe won't become irrelevant yet" news.

in Psystar’s $399 OpenMac Apple Mac Mini Clone — Elliott C. Back on Elliott Back's Blog
If non-Apple hardware could run OS X "out of the box" without modification, then something like the "first-sale doctrine" might apply, here. However, to get OSX to run on non-Apple x86 hardware, you need to use a modified (thus, copyright-violating) version of the OS.

Pystar would do well to sell this hardware, but offering to pre-bundle the copyright-violating OS modifications on the hardware and distributing it: that's just stupid.

I was waiting for the portion of the video where he tases her.

Sad, there wasn't any tasering. What good is a cop video these days without some good taser porn action? *bzzt, bzzt*

Stephanie, you think so? I'll try to write up a blog post about it tomorrow, with the Tcl scripts I used to do it.

I may have a workable Wordpress WXR that you can use to import into a new Wordpress installation based off of Stephanie's posts and comments RSS that she downloaded.

Marina, thanks for plugging Twitter Karma! :-)

Chris, I'd like to hear how/if Twitter Karma helps you with your friend/follower management dilemma.

I'll be adding the ability to follow/block folks from Twitter Karma in the next hour or so.

Jay, I'm really proud of the progress you and your wife have made. It sounds like you're really getting ready to be wonderful parents.

It's hard to remember to rejoice and praise God when times are good, but to know his love and kindness as a heavenly Father, that he will never leave you, can help you get you through those hard times.

in Discretion is Important on DygiScape
Kids who were school bullies grow up to be police officers. There's a reason why civilians need to carry firearms: to protect themselves from these kinds of officers.

Sure, there are some nice people who go into law enforcement--but, they're not the norm. Normal, healthy people don't seek out a job where you get a gun and a bulletproof vest the first day on the job.

The problem with the taser is that it IS believed to be non-lethal. It's used way too easily. Give cops guns: at least they might think twice before pulling it out and shooting someone. A taser? Too easy to abuse.

Until the "problem" is solved, Mixx will simply become another Digg in 3-4 years. Who wants to really invest time and/or energy into something that's going to go away?

This is why I hope the Netscape/Propeller folks get this right and put an end to the nonsense.

Put the ads where people are going to see them. Look at common site designs and respective heatmaps. It's pretty well-understood how people read and scan web pages and places where best to place ads.

in Email ain’t going away on Scobleizer
I think it's time to start a new Web 2.0 company: Spammer (or, "Spammr" if that's not too passe yet).

You simply create an account, tell it about all your various feeds, then create "recipient profiles"--email address, name, and what feeds you want to send them updates on.

Recipients can easily opt-out of receiving further updates, and/or configure which ones they get (overriding your initial presets, after which point, you can't change).

Okay, who's going to raise $10M VC funds first? GO!

Why not just stop the Windows Update process? Just look for the "wuauclt.exe" process and kill it.

While I'm disappointed that I didn't see any new visitors from the article, I'm honestly not surprised.

Still, it was a good article--I don't think we were misrepresented or quoted out of context and Kelly did a good job of not hating on Twitter like so many other MSM journalists.

in Not quite ad-free on banannie
Hi, discovered you through Twittermap looking for more New Jersey bloggers ...

Are you missing the boat? Possibly. With Google AdSense which targets ads based on content, sometimes the ads end up being almost valuable navigation for your readers.

I'd try putting your adsense block between the end of the blog post and your comment form. This would give your readers a "next link" to click through after they're done reading your blog entry that could net you some small CPC income.

Of course, this all predicates on the fact that what you blog about is content that advertisers are trying to target. There could be useful ads or there might not be. I always keep an eye on what ads are being served (and which ones are being clicked through) on my blog, to ensure that there's at least some chance that the ads are benefitting some of my audience.

in Is Coding an Art? on DygiScape
It's called "HT_M_L" and not "HT_P_L" for a reason. Marking up text is NOT programming. That's like saying someone using Microsoft Word, selecting text and hitting Ctrl-B (to make it bold), is "programming" using an IDE!

Repeat after me: Marking up text is not programming.
