Remember as well that there are some pretty basic things web designers can do to speed up WordPress. Simply removing a PHP call to fetch the current year can have a dramatic impact if you're experiencing hundreds of pages an hour. I wrote a piece on making wordpress faster a while back that provides some advice for new blog owners.

Great posts, I routinely use URL shortening in emails, there are also a few PHP scripts that will help you do this using your own URL.

I wrote a tutorial on how to do this in Photoshop about a year ago, it's fairly straight forward and let's you have much better control of the final image. Thanks for posting these links though, they're great for people who don't use Photoshop regularly.

I agree with you 100%, it's tragic and horrible. Dolphins (and porpoises in general) are smart, gentle and wonderful animals to be around. The Bay of Fundy just South of my home is teaming with wildlife like these as well as whales ranging from Humpback and Fin's to the big boys like Blue whales. Sadly, getting trapped in ice flow's is something that happens, the Coast Guard and Fisheries (our version of Fish & Wildlife) save far more than you could count but still, it's very sad when things like this happen.

On the truly negative side, it's almost spring so the seal hunt should be starting soon.

I think Twitter is in danger of pulling a Facebook here ... I loved Facebook but then they went and started messing around with an interface that worked in order to appeal to their own internal notions of what the site should function like ... guess what? We liked the old interface and we liked poking people.

There's an old rule when it comes to this type of thing, if it's not broke stop trying to fix it.

A few weeks back, my boss walked into my office while I was looking over some paperwork. On the monitor behind me was a financial report about him, specifically his latest contributions to the Republican party. Needless to say, he was concerned both how and why I had this information.

I explained to him that I had an RSS news feed triggered to identify news, blog and web posts which mentioned his name and that information about him was common on the Internet. It's funny, this man runs multi-million dollar companies but had never stopped to consider how much information about him was on the internet.

I spent years working in the newspaper business and I can honestly answer your question by saying no. The industry won't do anything to stabilize the market because the people in charge of selling the ads are commission based.

I hate marketers logic. When the market is tough, it's time to increase marketing budgets but refocus on more cost effective forms of advertising. Stop gambling on risky formulas and use the mediums which present valuable data in realistic times but please, don't *cut* budgets. That's simply suicide by a thousand cuts.

With all the negative press on the stock market and falling fuel prices etc. I can honestly say that I think this is some of the best news I've read all day! It's really not all that surprising however. If you think about it, Google is poised to keep making money as long people keep searching for content and reading the internet. I was looking forward to this last year but after buying my iPhone I have to admit that I'm in love. Actually what really got me going last year was the talk of Google buying up the airways and at the same time talking about phones. There was a great rumor that they'd planned to offer free telephone/internet access over the old TV spectrums in return for serving up AdSense content. That would have been wonderful but alas ... I awoke from my dream.

I couldn't agree more!

One of the first things that I look at when I'm making a purchase these days is other peoples reviews, especially of big ticket items like TV's and cars. I can't wait to see how new models of major appliances etc start to change when companies realize they can no longer hide faults.

Wow Greg, that's a great review of what should have been a brilliant campaign but the team that put it together should be ashamed of themselves. Great creative, crap technical ... just goes to prove that you can't let ad guys build web campaigns any more than you can let techie's but ad campaigns.

Ouch, while I salute their effort I don't think this approach is going to be as affective as they could hope. Besides, in the global market who really cares what one country does (or doesn't do) when servers can be relocated in a few minutes.

This reminds me a lot of burger king's venture into Facebook a few months back, it'll be interesting to see how (and if) big money companies can actually make Twitter work. There's certainly a lot of hype built up around it right now.

Honestly I don't mean to hate Microsoft as much as I do but I just can't see a Yahoo MS deal working. I suppose the one good thing would be that if they did join forces it would mean Yahoo would die eventually :)

I think Yahoo should say no for one very simple reason ... in 20+ years I have yet to see Microsoft make anything they bought better. Maybe I'm a simpleton but if I was Yahoo, I'd want to be better off after the purchase, not simply the same.

Well Frank, I can't say that this surprises me. I used to be in the business of data mining for a large department store, what we could assemble just by statistically analyzing your purchases on credit cards was bad enough ... what big social media websites would be able to do would be scary.

Funny thing Andy, I don't find these stats all that surprising. I've had a really hard time using Twitter, it appears to be a lot more about people Twittering *at* me, rather that with me.

So what I'm reading here is that Google failed because they refused to do things the way people assumed they should be done? Awesome. What I find funny about their approach in this endeavor is that they believed thousands of people across the country would embrace a radically different technology that could force them out of work while presenting little to no significant improvement to their lives ... that just doesn't sound like Google yet it's what they appeared to try.

A few years back I had an online altercation in a forum and he ended up posting a satellite view of my house as a method of proving he knew how to use the Internet (and maybe a little intimidation as well), I can see how some people would be a lot more uncomfortable if that type of people had sent a street view.
