I think if more people took the time to listen to what Matt has to say, the web would be a much cooler place for all of us. Thanks for posting this.

A few years back I had an online altercation in a forum and he ended up posting a satellite view of my house as a method of proving he knew how to use the Internet (and maybe a little intimidation as well), I can see how some people would be a lot more uncomfortable if that type of people had sent a street view.

I think Twitter is in danger of pulling a Facebook here ... I loved Facebook but then they went and started messing around with an interface that worked in order to appeal to their own internal notions of what the site should function like ... guess what? We liked the old interface and we liked poking people.

There's an old rule when it comes to this type of thing, if it's not broke stop trying to fix it.

So what I'm reading here is that Google failed because they refused to do things the way people assumed they should be done? Awesome. What I find funny about their approach in this endeavor is that they believed thousands of people across the country would embrace a radically different technology that could force them out of work while presenting little to no significant improvement to their lives ... that just doesn't sound like Google yet it's what they appeared to try.

Sounds great John, now that I have a Twitter client it's starting to make sense to me a lot more but any help would be appreciated. :)

I love that Google can do that type of thing, I remember the first time I searched for local movies and got the full listings ... blew me away. These days, I use Google shortcuts for almost everything.

I think if you're going to take the time to lie to your employer and then do something as stupid as engage in web based social sites (which would involve proving the excuse a lie) then you deserve to get fired ... but that's just my opinion.

Funny thing Andy, I don't find these stats all that surprising. I've had a really hard time using Twitter, it appears to be a lot more about people Twittering *at* me, rather that with me.

Great list Peter, Trust is really very important. Without it, the affiliate programs simply can't work.

I know that I shouldn't find it funny, and I don't really (or at least not in a haha kind of way) but it is sort of fascinating to see the stock market drop as a reaction.

Well Frank, I can't say that this surprises me. I used to be in the business of data mining for a large department store, what we could assemble just by statistically analyzing your purchases on credit cards was bad enough ... what big social media websites would be able to do would be scary.

I think Yahoo should say no for one very simple reason ... in 20+ years I have yet to see Microsoft make anything they bought better. Maybe I'm a simpleton but if I was Yahoo, I'd want to be better off after the purchase, not simply the same.

That's just silly. Building a great site is easy but building content is a nightmare, regardless of how famous or how much money you have. Best of luck to her but a site like this should have launched until it had enough content to be useful for the public.

Honestly I don't mean to hate Microsoft as much as I do but I just can't see a Yahoo MS deal working. I suppose the one good thing would be that if they did join forces it would mean Yahoo would die eventually :)

Wow, that might be a little drastic but as I keep telling young people (in class, not the park) ... what you do online is there forever. Last week there was a comment made about a women who Twittered herself out of a job at Cisco after bragging .. that's going to haunt her forever.

This reminds me a lot of burger king's venture into Facebook a few months back, it'll be interesting to see how (and if) big money companies can actually make Twitter work. There's certainly a lot of hype built up around it right now.
