in Audience is King on Chris Brogan
@Taylor
Money is king on the net when it comes to businesses getting customers. Any "community" or "club" that does not produce revenue for a business will be dropped like a bad habit. It has nothing to do with being bored.
BTW--it is ok to be bored and earn money. 99% of Americans are bored or frustrated at their jobs, but those jobs put food on the table. I'd much prefer to be bored and earn money from my basement rather than be bored and earn money in a cubical 1 hour from home.

taylormarek You totally missed my point, though you agreed with it unknowingly. Your Fathers Day video says otherwise as well... ;)

in Audience is King on Chris Brogan
We could discuss "what is king" all day long and get no-where. Truth is, making money is king. I don't think any of us are here to "have fun" or "get a warm and fuzzie" out of the internet.
Bottom line: If someone is making money from a project, platform or idea, then THAT is king. How you get there is the interesting part.
AL

taylormarek Money is NOT king. If you just do things for money's sake, you will be bored out of your mind and miserable. Now don't misunderstand me, money is important, but not be of such importance that we lift it up on a pedestal.

in Tomorrow Comes Quicker Than You Think on Todds Tips
Todd,
You may wanna get out of the AF and come to Chicago and forecast weather here. If you could get it right just 25% of the time, you'd be 10x better than these guys on TV here... you'd be rich! LOL
On a serious note, man I totally get what you are saying. My long term plans have changed several times in the last 10 years (and I am much younger than you ;) ) and during all those changes, I often forgot to live "for the now."
I think you may find that outside of the AF is so different too. I only did 4 years but when I got out, I found it hard to adjust to the real world.

Todd Morris Hey AL,

Believe it or not, I don't really want a weather job when I'm done with the Air Force ... I like weather, but when I retire from the military I intend for my life to sound something like:

- Get up, check email help get kids to school
- Go to the golf course
- "Work" business for an hour or two
- Hang out with kids after school
- Eat dinner, watch tv/movie with Ana
- "Work" business again for another hour or two before bed.

The main setback to my plan (and I'm sure I'm not alone) is trying to live the life I envision just a little too soon.

I'm all about having fun, I think it's a Very important aspect of a balanced successful life. But ...

Gotta sacrifice a little bit now, to get the rewards I want in a year or two, or five.

... and more importantly, gotta be constantly evaluating the type of sacrifices I'm making to ensure that the return on the investment of my time/effort is actually commensurate with the progress I'm making towards my goals.

As for life being different outside the military ... I know for a fact I am in for some culture shock ... I enlisted 6 months after my dad retired ... I've Never not been "in" the military ... in my entire life.

in Can Babies Swim ? on Todds Tips
Hey seriously man, great photo! cute kid too, LOL
growing up in FLA, we learned to swim super early.
My mom has old films of me at the beach with her and I was splashing in the waves and getting rolled around in the surf like a rag doll.
I saw a 20-20 special on TV a few years ago where babies were swimming underwater like dolphins. LOL

Todd Morris Hi Allyn,

Yes, I think I've seen similar tv shows, if not that same one, that show very little babies swimming like fish. I'd like to get Jaiden doing that ... lol, although getting her mom to agree to me throwing her in the pool could be a tough task :-)

Todd Morris Hey Al,

Yes, I expect to have to make a run over to the store for a spark plug next weekend when the mower doesn't start. lol, I just need my 16 year old son to come live with me again. Not that I don't like mowing the lawn ... but it's so much more fun to make him actually earn his allowance.

in Gary Vaynerchuk - How will Twitter monetize? So many people at... on Gary Vaynerchuk
Sorry man, gotta disagree here...
Hmmm, let's see...

JoeJohnny-regular-internet-user in middle America decides he needs to find "cheap soup."
will he run to type the term into "search dot twitter dot com" or "Google?"

C'mon, GV, you are way overboard on this one. Twitter is social, period. It is NOT Google. People on Twitter don't buy crap. They are too savvy for that. They are there to socialize and feed an info addiction. It is the same reason you can't monetize Digg traffic either.
Show me a guy trying to make money on Twitter, and I will show you a broke-ass guy! LOL :)

in One Way to Move Content Around on Chris Brogan
Hi Chris,
I am at work now, so I may not have taken time to look at Triond long enough, but I don't see where you can "sell" your articles. It looks to me like they publish your articles on their own sites and monetize them with Adsense or whatever and split the revenue with you.
If that is the case, then I'd be much better off starting my own blog network about my subject as I am sure I can dominate any of Triond's sites.
Am I off base?

in Guest Post- Are You Anonymous at Work on Chris Brogan
All of these tips are good ones, but for those of us in middle-to-upper management in a big company, we DON'T want to be noticed. In fact, the more I get noticed, the more work and responsibility they dump on me with no pay raise. It seems that when you move up within a company, the C-levels expect that you are loyal to the point where you will work for free. (ie: you're a ;company man')
They also use the bad economy as an excuse to squeeze more work from you. You fear a job loss. so you are willing to take more crap. That's what I see.

in AdSense Ads Not Showing Up - Here May Be the Reason! on John Cow dot COM
Carol,
they don't show up until the adsense bot crawls the content so Google knows what ads to show. On a YouTube video, there pretty much is no content besides some tags, thus making things a little slower sometimes.
if you are posting the vids on a blog, try adding about 150 words of supporting content utilizing keywords that support the video.
AL

Carol Schaefer Thanks...I am going to go back and review this now and see what happens if I add a number of additional tags...

This has been very helpful and I am appreciative of your time!

Take care and Happy New Year!

in Case Study: ProBlogger Guest Post Effect On My Traffic on How To Make My Blog
I did not check, but were the links no followed?
If not, I would suggest you stumble an digg your guest post as well as send some article marketing links to it. As you know, you get the PR6 juice from him as long as you stay on the front page, but when you fall off, it will drop.
If you could get the PR of the post up, that would be a great juicer for the future.
(BTW--I read the article and got a lot from it, but did not know it was yours. I follow you on Twitter)

Marko Saric @Lawn: links were dofollow from what I see. Hopefully Google will recognize them at some point. I did submit at Stumble and Digg. Thanks for tips and for following!

@Dayne and @Rowell thanks for commenting and following!

@Sarah: as everything I have written until now, it is a service to other bloggers who are working on getting their blogs to grow. About traffic, any kind of traffic can be monetized, even the RSS subscribers. So creating content people find valuable and getting loyal readers is always a step number 1 to anything you want to achieve with your blog. Without loyal visitors, there is not much you can do.

@Sid Savara: I hope so. If I see any other trends, I will surely write about it.

@Geoserv: yeah traffic was alright but SU did bring more visitors in those 5 days. As I wrote Problogger referred around 15% of my traffic on those 5 days. But it was very quality traffic as you see from Analytics stats in the article. Very much worth going for it in my opinion!

@Roman: I was surprised when I saw that big jump on the first day as well! The plugin and message I used might have been part of it, try experimenting with it yourself.

in Don’t Be A Shy Affiliate Marketer on John Cow dot COM
very true and I would add that I get annoyed with guys who on their sites find it necessary to point out that "yes this is an affiliate link" or on the other hand, "this is not a paid review here so that means I must really believe in this product."

honestly, that's crap. Does Rush Limbaugh tell you that every commercial is paid for on his radio show? No, it is obvious. people trust him and buy, period.
If you are an affiliate marketer, then don't apologize for it, just sell some stuff!!!!

in 4 Weeks to Answering What This is All For! on John Cow dot COM
I don't wanna go too much out on a limb here, but as a former pastor, I have seen this story play out time and time again and end in wreck and ruin because men do not like to admit they have lost control.
It is actually good therapy for you to blog about this (without giving too many specifics) as it will allow you to chronicle your trials while illustrating to those around you what you are thinking.
IOW--it may to difficult to express your feelings to those around you who are hurting because of your actions/inactions, but by writing it here, they can see into your heart and know where you are headed and get behind you on it.
Good stuff jason.

in Do You Already Assume How the Conversation Went? on John Cow dot COM
Well, this seems to be taking 2 different directions here.
After all, work and family are two different, yet important, parts of your life.
Achieving balance between the two is often difficult, especially with highly driven people (like you).
Driven people want the best for their family and their work, but the two do not always see that.

in October Focus — Niche Adsense Sites on MasonWorld Internet Marketing Blog
Hi Mark,
yep, I have tried some CJ stuff and I am doing pretty well with getting estimates through their Servicemagic affiliate. But guess what? They pay really low for lawn and landscape estimates! If I was sending them kitchen remodeling estimates, I'd get nearly $20 bucks each. lawn care estimates are only 3.00 each or less!

that is why I am looking at changing my model to selling an ebook on lawn care because I can write about things that are not found online. Believe it or not, there are a lot of "secrets" that we use to make lawns green that no one has talked about much online. (at least not in a clearly organized fashion in plain English) Folks in my industry like to keep homeowners thinking that lawn care is difficult, when really, it just takes a simple, yet methodical/consistent approach.

so my focus during the winter is to get that set up and rolling so when the spring rush in 2009 hits, I am ready. Hence my other question to you about the $7 script.

In the meantime, I have started some better paying sites in medical niches that seem to be doing better. Just need to get the traffic.
