in Small actions changing self-identity on Derek Sivers
Age 11, began taking guitar lessons.
Age 22, Read 4 Hour Work Week.
Age 23, started GuitarPlayerZen.com.
It really is amazing how certain actions and events can really define your life. Reading one book or article can light a fire within you to begin taking action. You aren't really sure where it is going to take you, but you know you have to start somewhere and do something.
I think a lot of bands and musicians become overwhelmed with the big idea of becoming famous and having their music videos being played on TRL. They just don't know what to do next.
While it is great to think big, it can be paralyzing.
This is a great article and hopefully will remind us all to realize that it is the small actions (the ones that you can execute today and in the moment) that really are the events that matter in terms of realizing success.

in Don’t call me SRV: Joe Bonamassa on GuitarToyBox
This is an interesting observation that I think holds a lot of truth to it. It really is strange how people will tell you that you sound just like someone for predisposed reasons, when in actuality, you KNOW that you are not sounding like them at all.
Some people just are ignorant I guess.
But Joe Bonamassa is a great player and I look forward to seeing what he has in store next!

I think there is a live DVD coming out soon, or maybe out now. I'll have to find me a copy of that one. Wished he'd come down to Australia.

in The Value of Networks on Chris Brogan
Great post Chris. I really believe in the value of diversity and opportunity in your networks. This is especially true in the music industry. If you are a guitar player looking for more guitar opportunities, it makes a lot more sense to have drummers, pianists, and bass players in your network rather than just a bunch of guitar buddies.
When opportunities arise, the most intelligent people find others who are different than themselves and who will compliment their skill sets and add value.

in An Example of BAD Social Network Engagement on Ignite Social Media
I personally don't see anything wrong with it. In fact, I really was intrigued all the way through, and even signed up for this air-into-water product launch.

in Move Out of Your Guitar Comfort Zone on Guitar Boomer
The title of this post immediately caught my attention. Lately I have really been thinking of this concept. There's a quote that says "If you keep doing what you always have done, you are going to keep getting what you have always gotten," or something along those lines.
Breaking out of your comfort zone and really challenging yourself to create your own style, sound, or future is what separates the great from the good.
Your story of starting the guitar at 50 is a great one! It is NEVER too late to go after your goals!
And hey it is always more fun and rewarding to take your influences and create your own sound rather than just imitate them!

in Top most recognizable guitar tones on GuitarFlame.com - Guitar stories from a semi-pro guitar player
You gotta have Eric Johnson up there if it is solely on tone. His lead and clean tones are immediately recognizable and unique, even more so than Satriani's. Although I love Satch's tone, I think a lot of guitar players have very similar tones to his. As well with SRV these days. When he was playing, you could immediately tell SRV's tone. Nowadays there are so many SRV clones that it makes it tough to discern.
I'd also say John Scofield has a very recognizable tone. Very loose and ratty and very cool.
