I work on Saturday, however it is good to read the words you provide and makes me feel a bit better about the entire event. Maybe I will be able to next year and feel a little better about the whole thing by then? I never knew Josie, but I often try to go to any event of such a nature that presents bicycle awareness and safety.

that was a good turn out for critical mass.. you should check out that course, it is very informative even for a seasoned bicyclist.

If you are upset about fallen riders, then by all means ride. Keep tossing this rhetoric of conform and join for the singular cause, and no one outside of spandex will ride. No matter the event people want to feel they belong. All your commentary does is further individuals like me from the event and any association with it.

Looks like it worked out. Six is a good number. Hopefully, it will work out a little better next time. If not, we always have Critical Mass as a backup to get some of that group riding for the month.

Chelsea mentioned the ride, I imagine she will get back with the SLC Critical Mass Mailing List or just us in general if she wants to follow through with that ride.

Thanks for the visit. We hope to make the 'bombs of bikes around the world proud with our brigade of freak bik'n, trik'n and the famous kiddie bike rid'n down the hills of Salt Lake City.

I don't think people will confuse the "U" bombs, figure if anything they will be enlightened to even more wild and fun rides.

Maybe the old library (aka leonardo)? Library Security cuts locks on bikes left @ main if they hang around too long.

They have an excellent bike rack on the East side by the stairs going up to the Roof Garden, just to the south of the stairs.

Are we just going to buy some chain from a place like Ace and throw a lock on em?

I have a key lock if you need it..

I wonder how Zoobomb locks 'em up?

Your right. He should riding a Huffy.. The Globe is far too classy.

I am glad he isn't riding something better, because that would mean he would be closer to Keith Christensen, and while a $2,000 bike, spandex wedgies, roadite gear and riding as a giant billboard of Clif Bar, Trek, Speedies, etc. can be fun for some, it fails to bring proper representation to all factions of the bicycle culture.

Actually, Ubomb is weekly, not monthly. If you go to the main page on the right hand side (sometimes down at the very bottom depending on your web browser) is a list of upcoming events, and I usually get around to listing the Ubomb and others.

good link to the article on fatcyclist. i really enjoyed it. i really am out of the loop when it comes to all the latest weight of bicycles and associated components. mostly ride, for ridings sake on a bicycle.

i actually like the web-like design for some reason.... something different in the realm of bland same frames, though i am more of the neopunk bicyclist myself.

Sorry if that came off bad. I really do support your efforts and the 'hustle' concept. All about mosh'n the bike with others. I am gonna give it a try when its up and running. I initially thought I wouldn't like the Sunday Sprints, but I did like them. If you need some graphic design for fliers, drop a line. I think after your explanation I am starting to gain a bit more of a feel on the matter.

it was an amazing ride and i was really impressed with how it went. don't know if i am for automobile weaving in outs again, but it was something different and exciting so no complaints this time 'round.

that logging concept of daily miles sounds like a workable concept. sort of a competition to simply ride your bike.

you are right, 2008 is the year of the bike.

we all come to bicycles inexperienced and ready to embrace an experience cycling in each of our own ways. i honestly don't know much about the structure of a bicycle and am still learning. i have always known although that the place to purchase a bicycle isn't Wal-Mart, and that is sound advice to stay away from the Evil Empire.

I recall once being yelled @ by a motorist that I shouldn't be wearing all black/dark colors while riding at night, despite having an excellent front light and solid red blinking back light. So I hope I blink enough at night that you won't yell at me. :) The SLC Bike Collective sometimes have some cheap blinkys too..

excellent first post! good to see that you alleycat'd well. as far as the "estrogen-driven rides" go, you have my support, even though i left my estrogen with my wife, who consequently, i keep reminding about the Girl's Night at the Collective. If you want fliers done for a girls ride, she is a perfect person to talk to and organize something. she however, isn't one of those hardcore titan women roadies, but a casual rider, so if you are going to organize something, please go easy.

just watched the video. the first part is a bit difficult to watch (lots of panning/blur) but the last part is way tight. though we need to get a helmet cam that straps on for the events - holding it in the teeth or while going real fast might spill trouble. i am gonna get one once that tax refund appears. you can play pilot with it for a few bicycle outings...

also, what song is in your video? crazy, fun stuff man.

Midnight Mass, my mixed relationship ride. While, I enjoy riding into the night, and don't mind creating a few of our own laws, I don't like people being left behind or having the safety of the mass compromised. Nor do I like going up big hills as not everyone can ride up them.

I can appreciate that Midnight Mass goes faster as night makes cycling come alive.

I didn't have a problem keeping up, however, this was a Mass ride, not a competition endurance ride, so the emphasis should have been different. It was not about competition or endurance but about bicycling together as a community.

If I wanted to compete, Saltcycle post would mention athlete development, cyclo-cross, tours and spandex jerseys. It doesn't, and it won't. That would be better served here or at many of the organizations that sponsor races.

"Lungs and legs burning and blowing out everywhere" was not the situation. It was never that dramatic. It was more like "alcohol and egos leading the mass to stupid situations."

If anyone wants to be a badass and conquer Salt Lake City on their bicycle for a mass ride I suggest riding one of these.

I just figured out something cool about the embedded youtube video viewer on the right side of SaltCycle.

Basically its a playlist (http://www.youtube.com/my_playlists)

that is embedded into the site and you rearrange the playlist by placing a number into the right hand column. Well each new upload is placed at the end of the list as the last number. I thought you had go through and renumber everything every time. You don't. You just put "1" on the newest video and it reorders them. Good information for youtube uploaders/website embedders.

that particular Smiths is filled with asses who care nothing of cyclists. they moved the bike rack once, and i thought they got rid of it, so i started locking up to the carousel, and the manager came out and was pissed at me.

i try to avoid that Smiths like the plague.

K, since we are talking of stores and bicycles, do you visit the NPS Store off Redwood Road oft? I take my bike cart over there, as the previous "what people carry on their bikes" article attest, and it works out well.

It is @ 1600 Empire Road off of Redwood Road and California Ave.

Most of the bicycle ride is smooth to it, though at the California Ave/Redwood Road intersection it can get a bit congested with traffic.

You do not have to have a membership.

You could get a bike and ulock it to the bicycle rack on the far side with a Bicycle Health Code Violation listing attached to the side.

You could gather a bunch of mini bikes that have signs that state "Health Code Violation", attach them to your back, walk in and see the fun.

the 'lost bike' was a pseudo advertising campaign in which one unrelated event or advertisement leads to something else. it was an effort to get people to see the flier, bicyclists in particular, think 'holy crap a lost penny farthing', see the "crazy" url and visit it. a reach, but crazier advertising campaigns have become successful.

DBR, you yourself said it best when we had that extensive conversation on midnight mass and how everyone acted so energetic, that is, that bicycle rides are dynamic and have a wide range of riding styles (the yin-yang of mass as you called it).

Some would say the loudness of Critical Mass or the speed of Midnight Mass makes people less considerate of cyclist. I think all of the rides have a purpose and strengthen the community in different ways.

Some pour liquor on the ground for their dead friends, we place tires and ride in a moment of silence.

Not in all instances of helmet usage, but in this instance I agree with you DBR. I think we should actually get downhill mountain biking helmets for this event as it is an extreme sport. Reading through the ZooBomb forums, I saw chipped teeth and all sorts of havoc to those that lacking the full helmet ( http://tinyurl.com/3tjdeu ). Even the regular helmets won't prevent that kind of damage. Other gear might also be considered.. including Elbow Guards,
Chest, Shoulder and Back Protectors, Hip and Tailbone Protection, Knee and Shin Guards and Downhill Racing Gloves, etc. source:

It should be also noted this incident happened to a newbie, a person doing the run the first time, so I really believe we should at least enact a base that new riders have to wear a helmet. Veterans can decide on their own. As discussed here:

heard only a few showed up this time. keep with it! as you get more exposure your numbers will grow. that is what happened with saltcycle. when it started I had five people visiting the site a day, now its somewhere near a hundred generally. it took months. actually SaltCycle's one year anniversary is in September...

Seems like an interesting situation filled with the usual angst and contention between cyclists and motorists. I would however like to attempt to befriend the motorists, despite all the faults in their choice, as if you have the motorists on your side you will likely have less police encounters - and as fun as those can be, I would rather avoid them. However, I don't pretend I can control the masses of cyclists, and I shouldn't - I just hope we don't become the San Francisco Cmass with the self righteous bad asses mingled in.

Connor, I think Ogden needs a voice for its own bike scene, however, I am willing to help. As much as I love you Davey, and the general populace loves you, I would love to see more quotes from a wider range of people to really dive into the topic - and I don't me just me or the others quoted. I mean people with differing viewpoints. To give these stories more dynamics.

I have rode in every Midnight Mass for a year, and have promoted it heavily in the past with fliers (ie. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/thezoed/... ). That said I am boycotting Midnight Mass because it is not a mass at all, but rather a race among hipsters guiding their misguided fixies up the east hills. If you want a real speed rush ride that doesn't involve all the fixie hipsters(midnight mass) and spandex warriors(other fast related events) I suggest you look into Blackout - a fast paced bicycle ride with the intent not to race, but rather to push yourselves to the breaking point, the blackout. Borrowed from the Wolfpack Hustle ( wolfpackhustle.com ) will leave you behind -but- everyone knows where the end destination is so it isn't a big deal as everyone arrives at the same location - unlike Midnight Mass where no one knows where anyone is going.

Actually, I did mention it before the ride that I didn't want to go up hills, and that is straight-way where the mass headed. No one listened, or at least the people leading the mass didn't listen.

I took back the name calling, that was out of frustration, but will not recall the anger for leaving people behind.

Really, you guys can have Midnight Mass. I will show up to the other rides. As I mentioned to Davey in a personal message, this wasn't just one incident, but the accumulation of a years worth of Midnight Mass crap that happened to explode after this last ride.

So if I was a bit too edgy, than realize it was just a lapse, though as mentioned NO one should ever be left behind in any mass-oriented ride because they ride too slow.

As far as any paper goes, I expect any article written to have multiple perspectives. Nothing against the U of U paper in particular.

Anyways, I am done now.

I am the retarded tall bike rider stereotype.

I find it silly how treehugger attacks companies and businesses that make an effort to become more environmentally friendly simply because said company does not comply with every single minuscule detail to make it "truly green." Something is better than nothing, and it's a step in the right direction no matter how small. Yes, the space-travel company is inherently polluting, but this cannot be helped, unless you want them to stop making a living. At least they are making an effort to green everything they can.

I understand this site's passion for the environment and sustainability, but sometimes you guys take your criticisms a bit too far. You should be praising companies that make an effort to green themselves, either partially or completely. Think about the alternative: they could just continue as they were before.
