in Do you ever feel like disappearing | Letter Never Sent on Letter Never Sent
I used to feel like that all the time. Still do, sometimes.
Not so much now as during my early adulthood and first marriage, but occasionally. Couldn't do it now, of course...there's the child, the husband, the school. I can't stand leaving baby even for a few hours.
If you're going to do that, you should before you get married and end up with all those obligations. And please send me a postcard so I know *somebody* finally was able to do it.

Excellent articles. I have to agree that people are much more fragmented than they used to be. Nobody seems to really have roots and extended kinship networks any more.
And personality profiling...don't even get me started. I'm terrified at the thought of being counted among the "soccer moms."

Ah, chickens. You remember where I used to live in San Antonio, Chris?
Down the block there was this old guy who owned at *least* 20 chickens. We could always hear the roosters crowing at our house. I felt sorry for his neighbors because the smell could be a bit overpowering in the summer.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Seattle's Best actually predates Starbucks.

Interesting you should use that quote, I've been thinking along those lines a lot lately.
...Which, I suppose, makes me very poor indeed.

Life and death have been on my mind quite a bit lately, ever since the death of Eric's grandmother.
There's nothing like feeding a baby (of whatever species) to make you think about the wondrous fragility of life.

I saw the movie of "The Great Santini" once. That guy reminded me of my father, only my father was never that lovable.

Happy (belated) birthday, Chris! Sorry I missed it, I'm chronically behind on my usual web reading.
I can't wait to tell Sarah the story of her birth. Especially the part about how I had to spend 5 days in the hospital. Whee!

Brilliant article on luck...as someone generally considered "lucky," I definitely agree with the professor's findings. Luck is really at least partly confidence and envisioning yourself being successful.
Someone once said that chance favors the prepared mind, and I think that's very true.
And I do think that having two incomes in a family can cause you to spend more and save less if you're not careful. Kind of a false sense of security thing...especially these days when having a job today is no guarantee you'll have one tomorrow, or even later today. I'm a little sensitive about that since I lost my job the week after I got married. Good thing we had a cheapie Vegas wedding!

Merry Christmas! Glad you had a good time.
Sorry I haven't written you yet, I'm having a little personal crisis. It'll blow over soon though.

Well, I think having a baby made me less self-absorbed, if that's what you mean.
And remember, there is no love without the eventuality of loss. You just have to let yourself go and feel. It's not like you get do-overs or anything. I regret very much the times I could have done or even felt more and held myself back.

Hey, I was just thinking the same thing!
I really do miss letters, especially the ones we used to write. So, how about it? E-mail me your current mailing address and we'll get back to writing to each other. You know I've never been much at a loss for things to say.
