It wasn't for me. Despite my bubbly personality and long list of friends and associations, I just didn't have it in me to plan make-up parties.

But I've told my boyfriend that he should do it - several times. He's such a metro man and really takes his skin care seriously and thought he could make some great money and hip is other men friends onto it....Not to mention all the ladies who would be willing to buy product from a man.

I knew my idea was worth salt.

Re: does black culture care about the environment?

I think I was added to rsspect.org after this entry, but I also blog about the environment - but I focus on education - such as environmental education, environmental science, and recycling. My site targets "young" people - teens and young adults. But I'm hoping that teachers and mentors and even advocates like you and your readers will find the site informative, because I focus on awareness - just trying to help people understand the environment and appreciate it, even in urban areas.

I focus on "urban ecology" and "urban audiences" because this topic and these audiences are often 2 ships in the night. Most people don't appreciate the natural spaces in cities and towns and metro areas. Yes, such areas are small and managed, but they are there and provide some shelter and green space for animals and people alike. Urban audiences often are unaware of just how much 'green' is around them, of the several species and number of wild animals, insects, trees, and flowers that are their neighbors. If we can re-focus our attentions and behaviors locally - and I mean very local, like your front and/or back yard or neighborhood park - then collectively our efforts to salvage (and respect) the earth/environment on a national and global scale become much easier.

Thanks for re-posting this.
DNLEE (which stands for Demystifying Nature, Letting Everyone Experience)

P.S. It's not always fun, like now - writing my dissertation and struggling w/ stats..So not sexy. But I do it anyway because it allows me to do the things I do like - Like sharing the results, going to conferences, science blogging. I didn't attend an HBCU, but my biggest critique with HBCU Biology programs is that they are medical science/microbiology leaning. Ecology programs are almost non-existent at these schools. But as far as I can tell, if they a tier 1 or 2 school, then they are pretty much on point in the other sciences and engineering programs.
Also, thanks for the Engineering info. I am truly biased, so I need such resources to inform me.

Although many of you didn't go on to get graduate degrees or PhDs, you considered it. You were made aware at some point that 1) a PhD exists - I didn't know what a PhD was until college; 2) you seriously considered it and may have attended graduate school for some time. You participated.

But the lack of diversity can lead to desperation at times. With so few Blacks going to grad school for STEM everyone is tempted to hold on to you and keep you in no matter what. It's a temptation I fight when I meet bright students from the hood who forgo college to stay home and work. I end up trying to bribe their parents to let them go or keep their children while they go to class - for the greater good in the long run. But then I am reminded that people have responsibilities, choices and the right to pursue them.

I just hate to lose one.

Re: Remembering Black Wall Street

Joy, you are so right. The answer to your question is DISTRACTION. We are distracted by the concern for accumulating stuff. That's not bad, but wanting stuff more than wanting intellectual capital or making long-term plans is what keeps us from getting together and building communities and enterprises like we use to. We were focused. The Hispanic community is focused - for now, but I wager in 2 or 3 generations their children will be fully enculturated in American materialism that they to will wonder what happened.

Re: About a Year Ago on YBP: Fixing Black Middle-Class Mobility

This recession also makes me think about ways to save money. I keep thinking of ways get the necessities in life without spending money, or much less of it. I think we all should consider 'simplifying' our lives to one that resembles our parents or perhaps grandparents.

As a young child, I remember going out to eat was a treat, it happened, maybe once a month or two. Now, I am spoiled and lazy. I've become accustomed to fast food or quick heat and eat meals. It's more time consuming but money saving to cook from scratch or semi-homemade. I'm learning and applying hard lessons, mostly in the kitchen.

Re: Women Can Lift Heavy, Too!

Welcome tp YBPGuide. Contrary to popular belief, not all Scientists are Athiest; but the truth is many are or at least Agnostic. This idea of religious preference is real and many of us take it for granted. It dates to slave times, too. On some plantations, slaves were given time off from the day after Christmas until New Year's eve. Often families lived on neighboring plantations and given the right paper work (and disposition of the slave) they were allowed to travel to se their families. Since they had to return to their own plantations by New Year's Day morning, the community would stay up all night, celebrating, worshiping, and spending those last moments together. As men were preparing to depart early in the morning, they would make last minute visits to the ladies and give them luck for the new year. This is were the custom of having a man be the first to cross your threshold on New Year's day is said to come.

Re: Share Your Conversion Stories

That's interesting. I was a skeptic, even as a kid. I remember trying to read the real bible on my own, not the illustrated Children's version, at the age of 6. The poetry confused me, but I was getting through it. I read how God created the world in 6 days and I had to shut the book. I asked every adult: "If the whole world can be created in 6 days, then I why must I wait s long for my new tooth to come in?"

My skepticism wasn't about doubting the exisitence of God (I don't), my issue was with logical proceedings of events. By that age, I had started to gain an idea of time and how long it takes for things to happen. (I was a VERY impatient child - still am), e.g. the school day, the school year, one birthday to the next, time to prepare dinner, arrival of Christmas, the regrowth of my front teeth, etc. It just didn't make sense that the WHOLE, ENTIRE World could spring up in a short amount of time and my whole life was about waiting.

After that, I became the ever skeptical, always reading individual who always cross-referenced EVERYTHING. I felt better when I read (somewhere) that that reference was about 6 man days, but that a day to the Lord is like a thousand or more years. Whew. Made reconciling Evolution easy for me.

Re: Make it a Day ON … not a Day OFF - MLKDay ‘09

I first participated in a Day of Service last year, when I was working with AmeriCorps- which I think coined the phrase - A Day on not a Day Off.

If you're doing outside service, stay warm.

Re: Undergraduate Research - It’s a Good Thing

J: Thanks for the co-sign.

Re: BigUps: Dr. Gina Francis

This IS awesome! I hate worksheets!.

However, there are some great programs and educatorsout there who are doing some great hands-on science. Much of what many of us science and education bloggers promote is a better way to engage people (youth and adults). I've never heard of campaign money being used for wardrobe before.. And $150K -- that's a whole lot of money. It does sound outrageous. But not hearing it doesn't mean it has never happened. Do we know for sure that other politicians have not used campaign money for 'marginal campaign expenses' like clothes while campaigning, meals while campaigning, etc.
To me the issue is so much money being spent on a marginal expense versus a real expense like travel or commercials or signage. That's a lot of overhead for clothes. The amount of money concerns me - and it doesn't matter that those clothes will be donated or not. You can find nice clothes for say $10-15K and that wouldn't have been so shocking to me.

As one who can find a loop in most anything, I can see (superficially) how this might been seen as okay expenditure. But what do the rules say? I'll admit I don't know how it works.

And I am no fan of Palin, but as a proud feminist, this talk of her wardrobe is sexist. Same thing when everyone droned on and on about Hillary's pantsuits and whether they were feminine enough.

I've never ever heard any political talk of male candidates' wardrobe. If it was handsome enough, masculine enough, had enough buttons, how much a suit costs, etc.
Reducing female candidates to looks and appearance is sexist.

Re: Help a Black Science Blogger Win Scholarship

thanks everyone, I really appreciate the support. you're the best!

Re: CES 2009: Ludacris releases first Rap HDS Blu-ray album

Wow! but what do the letters CES stnd for? I've been waiting on this too. Since I do so much outreach and education to under-served audiences anyway, I would love to be able to "work' my student debt off. And since I'm a scientist, I'm really hoping that gets me extra points - since Obama is pro-science/education/technology.

I just hope the bill allows for some other way to work off your debt than teaching K-12 school (which I know I could do now). I'd rather do "science" or informal teaching - like afterschool, summer science camps, mentoring students and teachers, as opposed to classroom teaching.

I want this, too. See you aroung the community service watering hole.

Re: Ciara featured in Women’s Health

Those turquoise boots are the BOMB! and I think the article's thesis is great. stay in shape, have fun, be sexy.

Re: Chris Brown Does a Bit of Single Ladies

cute! that is one catchy tune and dance!

Re: The White House is Now on Twitter

that's what's up

Re: Separated at Birth: Lil’ Mama and Lil Bow Wow

I've also thought they favored one another.

Re: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Becoming a Musical

I actually think this might be good. I just started a blog carnival - Diversity in Science with the inaugural edition being dedicated to Black History Month - celebrating black innovators in science, tech, enginnering and math.

I am hosting the carnival on my blog, Urban Science Adventures! (c). The announcement of the carnival is on my page: http://urban-science.blogspot.com/2009/02/its-black-history-month-celebrate.html.
Please, please, please contribute to the carnival. I have received lots of support from the science blogging community but I am hoping this would be a multi-disciplinary blogopshere partiication project. I read your blog all of the time (subscribed via Networked Blogs on Facebook).

Submission deadline is Feb 20, and the carnival will be posted on Feb 24.
This is the link to submit your blog post: http://blogcarnival.com/bc/submit_6257.html.

If you choose to participate, please promote the carnival, encourage others to participate.

Shoot me an email if you have any questions.
Thanks, Danielle

Re: Etta James Disses Beyonce

Ms James sounds like a hater....mad at the popularity of a younger generation of entertainers. sad.

Re: Worst Dressed at the 2009 Grammys: Paula Abdule

I like the hair thingy.

Re: Vibe Magazine Thinks Outside the Box During Economic Crisis

not too bad, hope it keeps them afloat.

Re: Jill Scott in “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”

I half-way read the first book. interesting. looking forward to the show.

Re: Facebook Fans: Win Tickest to One Step Beyond 4/17

If I lived in NY, I would love to be there! I thought about making a post about "wish items/ graduationgift ideas. but I thought I was being ridiculous. Even if someone got me something (which is what I want to happen) I would feel embarrassed. I could hear my grandmother telling me how bad that looks - like begging or fishing for gifts you hadn't deserved. Hmm, but maybe she's just got into my head. Cause I feelbad about getting gifts even from ppl I know. -- Crazy, huh.

I will post my wish now -- after I finish the dissertation.

Congrats and thanks for the affirmation.

Re: Technically Latino

Thanks gentlemen, this is great. I'm coming up short, too. I might have to break my own "no googling rule", but I'll wait. The purpose is to shine light and educate. I'll try to find some Latino/Hispanic STEM professional websites first and let them know about this meme. And I'll try to get some fellow Science/Engineering Bloggers to play along.

Thanks for spreading the word and your great insight, Jose. Having role models, or at least someone to reference, in an under-represented field matters. You made that point so well. I've been struggling for the right words to explain that.
