in HOT! Facebook version 1.5 for the BlackBerry available for upgrade on BlackBerry News
It's a nice update but doesn't look different enough that most people would notice (save for the messages in your inbox which - well - should have been here about 7 versions ago).
Nice catch.

in Twitter 2012 on Scobleizer
The cracks start to appear (grow) in the Friendfeed armor...
FF just grew too irrelevant, too clubby, too cliquey, too much bacon, too many kid photos, cat photos, look at me posts, chit chat that stretched 100 (off-topic) comments, too clubby (did I mention that?).
I'm not sold a re-design will save FF. Instead I'd rather see Facebook incorporate their wide range of services that can be imported.
A big problem with FF is the "who the hell is this person" question that always went through my mind when reading posts/links.
One big thing which I believe Twitter will need to include is some type of authority for senders (similar to how Google has pagerank) -- as the service grows (and in many respects I wonder whether it has already jumped the shark) Twitter will become increasingly noisy and tempting for spammers to try to game.

in Name that Tune in One-Click! BlackBerry Gets Shazam! on Gear Diary
I'm not too keen on the BlackBerry App World listing these programs as free. With respect to Shazam you don't see anything about a 60 day free promotional period until you scroll down about 60 feet on the the BlackBerry App World or actually install the program.
Not cool.
The app on the other hand does seem to work and while I usually am not that curious about the song titles - my kids however always want to know...
Since the iPhone App Store has a similar program which is presently priced free (although some have commented that there may be some wording about the iPhone app going pay in the future) - I'm inclined to use the iPhone app.

Yes $35 is a little pricey but I probably would have bought this when the kids were younger. It looks really useful.

in Gaming in the clouds… on Gear Diary
Isn't it great when the old concept of dumb terminals comes full circle. And I'm so happy to ditch Microsoft Office for Google Apps. I set my kids up with Google Apps and I have no idea why schools don't make it their standard package as well because every home with a computer and an Internet connection has a copy of Google Docs -- which is free and requires zero maintenance!

in TealOS? No more says Palm on Gear Diary
Been wracking my brain to remember the other Palm developer who came out with a very highly widgetized "platform". I don't think it was these guys - but maybe.
They had a lot of promo and some buzz - then promptly disappeared.

in April 1st - Google Had A Good One Today… Or Did They? on Gear Diary
I agree with all your points. Auto-pilot is not that far fetched (funny, but not far fetched)...
I'm also big time on the voice mail to text bandwagon (though I use phone tag) and since my Google Voice account just went live (finally) -- I'm thinking of switching everything to them.

in Review: Pocket Informant 1.0 for iPhone on Gear Diary
I'd guess it may be an ok price. PI has a pretty strong following and name recognition. I bought it without a lot of advance thought especially knowing how easily iphone upgrades get applied via iTunes.

in Where in the World Is the Palm Pre??? on Gear Diary
Agreed and I think that Palm has to hit a grand slam -- and even then there is a real danger of them being either taken over or going out of business.
This is a super competitive business and Apple has raised the bar very high.
So far there are a lot of predictions about the success of the PRE based on exactly zero people using it in the field.
That means there's a lot of expectation that could potentially deflate very very quickly.

in Review: Pocket Informant 1.0 for iPhone on Gear Diary
Nice! This is my all time favorite calendar. I have it on my BlackBerry Bold and my iPhone. While I don't use Outlook (made the switch to Google a few years ago) -- the Google Calendar synch works perfectly on iPhone.
My favorite part of the program is the weekly view. For some reason the smartphone makers never work a decent weekly view into their calendars.

in Update for Sage MAS 90 and MAS 200 2009 941 and other tax changes now available on Schulz Consulting
Steve -
I just heard from Sage and there will be an Interim Release disk available to fix the 941 and also NJ tax law issues.
It sounds like they will make two separate fixes available so if a payroll user doesn't need them both they only load what they need.
Sage is presently putting these through quality testing and expects to set them free in the wild shortly.

in QuickBooks vs MAS 90 comparison guide now available on Schulz Consulting
What I tell my clients who are considering moving off MAS 90 or renewing a license is ---
Consider whether you could live without specific functionality that you're getting now in MAS 90.
In some instances the answer is yes -- and the client moves.
In others, once they think, their answer is NO that they can't live without MAS so they license that extra copy.
This is especially true for people with a lot of data who don't want to convert and lost history as well as anyone with custom reporting or inventory needs.

Update - I was unable to secure a sample page to show you. As a matter of fact the contact person emailed me as if I'd just stepped off a space ship and walked into their office to request such a thing.
Apparently the concept of providing their customers with a sample of what they're selling is foreign.
A few people have contacted me to ask where they can get these guides....

in Why eReader for BlackBerry is a fail on Gear Diary
The same availability argument could also be made about just carrying a paperback book around.
My opinion is that just as the iPhone did, the Kindle raised the bar for what we can expect from an eBook reader.
Trying to memorize my EXACT registered name -- as well as full credit card number I used to purchase a book 3 years ago -- is not user friendly to me.
This has happened to me multiple time when I've switched devices and decided to give the reader another go. Sure, the books transferred but not after a LOT of frustrating brain wracking.
Not the user experience I'm looking for in the future.

in reQall Improves Free Service and Adds New Pro Version on Gear Diary
I'm testing out the BlackBerry version of reQall and it works pretty well. The only thing I haven't been able to make work is the Google Calendar integration.
I plan to subscribe to this and use it as my primary shopping list maker and thought gatherer.
Transcription of words is not 100% --- and I'm ok with touching up many of the notes which I think are more memory joggers than final form written masterpieces.

in Does Palm Pre have a chance against iPhone? IMO: No, but it probably doesn’t matter on Scobleizer
Pre's OS isn't out yet. Almost nobody has even held the device.
On what basis can anyone claim Palm will do well (or not) without
Knowing how well Pre works?
The best indicator is Android. Success there had been way way
Below hype and expectations.
Don't think Palm will survive independent.
