"Just grab it" -- like you say in the book, if you're a blogger, pumping out great content, perhaps building a readership, you can't just sit there and expect the money to start pouring in. Cold-call companies in your niche - ask them to advertise on your blog. I think that's an uncomfortable exercise for people that maybe thought they would just be able to blog from their cocoon, but THAT is going out and grabbing it. Don't wait for advertisers to find you - go find them.

Facebook video is POWERFUL. When I send a video thank you to new fans of my tee company, people are (sometimes) blown away by the personal greeting. However, at least half the time, the damn video doesn't record! I hate that freakin error. After 5 or so times, I am practically sick of saying the same thing to the same person!

Yes, Facebook is free, but I am still going to complain! Beef this shizznit up, Facebook!

I hesitate to criticize here - ANYTHING happening at McGurk's is a good thing, discussion over!

However, the DM I received from @Rex7, inviting me to the Tweetup, was the first interaction I had EVER had with him. He doesn't really interact with any of his followers. He tweets lots of interesting links, but never really talks with anyone. Go check his tweetstream - the "@" replies are few and far between.

Having a large follower list is not a bad thing, per se (wink wink), but real interaction is a very good thing, IMHO.

I believe this also holds true for becoming a "fan" of a fan page - I have been picking up fewer fans because the viral aspect of fanhood is now gone. Someone becomes a fan of me, and it doesn't appear but in the person's profile. FTL

Job that is unfulfilling = gets you down. Makes you tired. But you're right, if you want it bad enough, you have to work while your friends are at the bar or watching some crappy tv show. But also, I think there are some true workhorses that really want to work 18 hours a day on their dream instead of just 8.

I confess to using Tweetlater to send auto-DMs to new followers. There, I said it! lol

However, I should point out that:

1. In my profile, I do warn you that I'm going to send you an auto-DM, and I tell you what it's going to be about. I think if someone is that serious about Twitter, they should review who it is they're about to follow, and if you did that with me, you'd be forewarned that I'm going to DM you.

2. I do market my business - yes, I have t-shirts I want to sell you - but I do spend a heckuva lot of time NOT talking about tees. I'm close to 6,000 posts now - I love Twitter, and would be there whether or not I had a company. I do spend time helping others with advice, sales leads, and just silly links to silly stuff.

For some, auto-DMs and marketing are the scourges that ruin Twitter. To me, it seems symptomatic of a problem - just really bad marketing by a group of folks - and I am delusional enough to think I am not part of this group!

I get what you're saying Robert, and I agree. There's gold wrapped up in the 175MM accounts, and perhaps Mark is looking to mine it.

However, the new Facebook is simply more difficult to navigate than the old one. And I believe this to be so even after taking time to get to know it. I am not confident that, in its present form, people will find it easy enough to use to mine it for the information you are citing (friends' restaurant reviews, etc).

No, the users won't leave. But they might use FB less - I know quite a few people that are now using it less, strictly due to the recent changes. This equates to less data to mine, and that's a huge problem for FB.

Many companies don't have the horses to run in this race. If you're an older, well-established, possibly stodgy company, you will likely have no clue how to use these new Social Media tools. In reality, there's very little chance you'll be able to jump on Facebook or Twitter and "fit in." My dad completely DOESN'T get it - he yells at me when I whip out my iPhone. He hates the thing.

If you're a company that thinks you need to jump in, but you don't have the right folks on board to help you, I think the move is to hire someone young that "gets it." Or (in a fit of shameless promotion LOL), hire a company like Vaynermedia to help you.
