in POLICE SEEK SUSPECT IN SECOND STREET RAPE on The District Weekly
Geez, John, would it kill you to just admit that what I said was essentially correct? I suppose I could/should have added the word "deadly" to "weapons" to be exactly, precisely, specifically, totally correct. But frankly, who gives a shit?

Perhaps the good Commander will educate us through you as to just what "other things" Penal Code Section 417 means. Yes, it does deal with things other than guns, but the last I knew, it deals with weapons of all kinds. If a suspect is accused of being "417", that means he/she is alleged to be armed with something more than just "fists". Still a valid cause for concern!

in GARCIA’S ORDINANCE: WHAT PART OF ‘EQUAL’ DON’T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND? on The District Weekly
Re: "What part of equal don't people understand?". I'll tell you what part of "equal" I don't understand: Why should this proposed piece of legislation be exempt from the usual committee hearings that any other proposal would be subjected to? I would be willing to let the Council decide just which committee(s) should hold hearings to evaluate all aspects/impacts of this propoal, but I would expect the Budget Oversight Committee's involvement as a minimum. Can anyone honestly say that this proposal will not cause the price the city pays to it's contractors to increase? And in economic times like we are experiencing? If you want "equal", then act equal!

Please, please, please donate generously when the "begging buckets" are circulated at intermission and buy a T-Shirt to support the band. We want the band to be back next year for it's 101st year! THANKS!

Jenny--Thank you for sharing your personal insights with us. My wife and I are better than 40 years older than you are and we are scared shitless also. We are retired, trying to live on a fixed income and we face most of the same challenges you do: increasing costs for supplemental health care insurance, food costs that seem to increase at about 10% per month, the sales tax you mention, increasing (again) cost of energy, huge increases in water rates, PLUS the knowledge that hyper-inflation is inevitable given the actions already taken by the new administration. You are not alone. I don't want to give you false hope, but when we were your age, things always seemed to work out.

Frankly, I was hoping for some more (actually, a lot more) kick-ass, side-splitting jokes to appear here. If this is all we are going to get, then in my judgement, "Funny", you are the clear "winner". I have probably told "your joke" to over a hundred people, always with the same devistating results; they almost fall to the floor laughing so hard they get winded! THANKS!

LB City Girl Charming. Have you ever noticed I don't resort to name calling?
bluelinebilgepump as an avid reader of the comment section, it's easier just to skip LBPityGirl's useless banter.

by the way, i am getting my house remodeled and am staying in a nice hotel on pine downtown and noticed at least a dozen of officers around wasabi, 4 inside and several patrol cars parked. pine avenue itself was dead.

Mike R.--Do you know any attorneys that are willing to call Shannon's bluff? I agree that any and all Long Beach taxpayers should be told how many sworn officers are actually on the payroll. The "homeland security" excuse is just the latest in a long line of excuses going back over twelve years not to be forthcoming with that info. There are legitimate reasons for a plus/minus accuracy of about ten officers; but you may be onto something larger by an order of magnitude. Chief Batts, by his open and honest nature, would probably share that info with you in a heartbeat; but Foster/West/Shannon will not permit him to do so. Remember, he is NOT a politically driven ELECTED chief law enforcement officer(CLEO); he has bosses to whom he must answer and it is they who are most definitely politically driven. That leaves you with two options: (1) Try to get the council to have the number(s) released. Not likely to work because in the past even they have been afraid to demand that info for themselves. (2) Have an attorney sue to get the number(s) released. Far more likely to succeed; I believe Shannon is running on pure bluff here and would lose in a nanosecond in front of a judge. Might cost some scratch; its for you to decide if it's worth it.

If you actually have a desire to meet LBPD officers, you would be well served to join/start a Neighborhood Watch Block Group. I guarantee you that in seven years you would have met at least two dozen LB cops there. If you had attended the Monthly Crime Prevention Meetings for the past seven years, you would have met approx. one hundred more.

Do you know something that the rest of us don't? Last I knew this was not a class-action lawsuit; it was(is?) 822 separate lawsuits filed against LB. Have these now been aggragated into one class-action suit?

Maybe some of us ask better questions than do others. My original response today was to a SPECIFIC question by Fair Questions? which had been asked and answered not that long ago. And John Greet's answer at that time was precise, CONCISE and (I assume) accurate. His answer sets him apart from most other LB cops and, in my opinion, in a good way.

howardx yes toad you are correct, that ONE time that you asked greet that SPECIFIC question he was concise. other than that i have found him to be verbose in the extreme which is what i was referring to in my post.

i wonder if by not signing on to the suit greet is forfeiting anything actually or if the suit is successful will he recieve back pay regardless of his involvement?

Pat--Your use of the term "jurisdiction" is what troubles me here. I'm not trying to put words in you mouth, but it appears to me you are confusing "jurisdiction" with "police beat". Just as cities/counties can't require officers to live in that city/county, they cannot deny them the option to live there. I'm guessing here, but they can probably prevent an officer from patrolling the "police beat" in which said officer lives if that city/county chooses to make that a consistent policy. To invoke the term "jurisdiction" would exclude the officer from living anywhere in the city/county of his/her employment. And constitutionally, that just ain't gonna fly.

You messed up again. If you remember my asking him originally, I specfically asked for "a simple yes or no answer" and he gave one: "no". One word, two letters: i don't know how anyone can be more "concise" than that.
And, yes, I misspelled "concisely" the first time. My bad.

howardx im getting tired of having to explain everything to you toad, reread my comment and ask yourself if i couldnt be talking about greets posts in general, rather than any specific one. i didnt mention your misspelling but felt no need to emulate it in my post.

howardx--You must be slipping; I can't believe you didn't take Pat to task over the last sentence of his first paragraph. Unless he has an unusual definition of "jurisdiction", what he says would be unconstitutional.

howardx i didnt even notice toad, maybe i am slipping!;)
Pat I meant "their" isntead of your. And I agree its dicked and questionable. Supposedly some Orange County departments don't want their officers to live in the jurisdiction to remove the emotional response to a call if its potentially at your home or that of a neighbor. I honestly don't remember what cities were included and don't wanna blindly say

Don't know where you have been, but I asked John Greet whether he was a part of the lawsuit in question over a month ago and he answered very consisely "No".
It is worth noting that with 822 sworn Long Beach ofiicers having brought suit, he is one of the very, very few not to have sued, when you deduct the Command Staff from the total number of sworn officers we have.

What I find of interest here is that ICB apparently waited for the feds to mandate certain corrections. Wouldn't prudent management have already been aware of the problems and have been working to fix them instead of waiting to be "caught" by federal regulators from the Treasury Department?

in TOO LETTER, TOO LATE FOR CITIZEN INPUT INTO NEW COURTHOUSE? on The District Weekly
Thank you, Niki--But I'm still confused. Aren't Magnolia, 3rd St and Broadway still part of the boundaries? What WAS the west boundary "before" and what IS it now? Also, what do the children, staff and faculty need to be protected from? It is admittedly a guess, but I expect all ingress/egress from Magnolia and/or Broadway. I just don't see danger lurking near Chavez School (at least not as a result of the new courthouse).
Niki Tennant The current proposed project takes in two square city blocks. The previous was one square block, basically in the middle of two housing developments. One housing developer pulled out and the courthouse project was apparently expanded to now take in two square city blocks, the western edge now abutting Cesar Chavez Elementary School. Yes, the ingress/egress is planned for the southeast corner of the development, and hopefully it stays that way as the architectural plans progress.

The current courthouse is now a half-mile away from the school.
