He may not have been stopped because he was Black - but the fact that the emergency lights were on as he ran the red light as well as the fact that they drove directly to the hospital parking lot should have been enough for this policeman to know that there was a problem at best. But, frankly, I'm not convinced that the officer didn't know that Moats was DWB.

I gotta be honest here. I agree with Diane, motherhood can cause many o your brain cells to just not click right. But, something about this story just doesn't settle well with me. With two other children ages 3 and 6, I find it hard to believe they didn't remind "momma" that the baby was still in the car. Just doesn't sound right to me.

Evening GFs! Hope all is well with you...In reading all the Darfur posts today, makes you realized just how blessed we are! Before researching and reading the great references provided by Modern Musings - I was about to write a post on how stupid the debate was over the Olympic Opening Ceremonies and whether Bush should participate. Then I learned about China's part in what's happening in Darfur. I'm certainly re-thinking my position on that one! Man's inhumanity to man without consequences continues to amaze and sadden me. Anyway - my eyes have certainly been opened, too MMO! Ya'll have a good one! Oh yeah - did you catch Obama and Hilary on CNN tonight...very interesting but I must admit I went to sleep on the Queen ! It is what it is! This angers and scares the hell out of me! I just can't believe that she would let those words come out of her mouth! The fact that she will not force fully retract the statement is telling. "I apologize if what I said/did offended you" is not an apology but a politically correct appeasement that does not acknowledge that the behavior or statement in an of itself was wrong. But of course, HRC's supporters, hard working supporters, white supporters won't call it like that! But we all know it to be true. I just pray that one of these idiots don't take this statement as her call to act!

As a teacher/educator, I learned very early "not to bite" when students test you. Unfortunately, this teacher "took the bate" and will probably not teach another day of her life. It's probably - because she's a sub - that she may not be a licensed teacher with a degree in education. I know many folks with a couple of years of college who substitute in the school system here. If this is the case in this situation, this woman was put into classroom with no formal training in education and classroom management. That is certainly a formula for disaster.

But, having said all that, if the student swung first, the teacher has to defend herself - and if that had happened to me, I probably would have beat her a$$ till it rope like okra!

Great Choice! I have so much respect for Donna. Didn't really have an opinion one way or the other about her during the Gore campaign - but of course she was playing a different role then. But watching her on CNN and especially during the committee hearing last week...well, all I can say is D*mn She Good! I love the way she cuts - and I do mean cuts - right to the chase with much grace, class, and dignity. I bet that sometimes, folks don't realize until watching the tape delay that they've just been read by a master!

First, I just feel like congratulations are in order. These have been a hard 5 months - and I just kind of feel like those of us in blogsphere - and particularly the Afro Spear and Sphere - contributed to this history making event.

I'm really filled with so much emotion right now. Its so hard to even put it into words that make sense. My kids will be voting for the first time in November. They were babies when Clinton ran the first time and I took them to the polls. That was the first time that my husband voted. We were all so excited about voting for someone with whom we could identify. Even the kids cast "kiddie ballots" for Clinton. The fact that we will all have the opportunity to cast our vote for an African American for President is just so surreal. WOW!!!

There is, in my mind, an irony about Barack's candidacy, too. I talked about it briefly at SjP's. Drop by and let me know what you think.

1 - R.I.P. Tim: Yes, R.I.P! He was genuine and sincere. Sunday mornings will not be the same... I didn't realize until this weekend that he was so loved and respected in the journalistic world or that he was truly a mentor. I will certainly miss him.

We have no control over the day our journey begins or the day our journey will end. We only have control what we do and the paths we take during this journey. I pray that during my journey, I leave the pile higher than I found it for those who will come after.

Good for you! I work with young folk between 18 and 25 and am often amazed at the sense of "entitlement" they seem to possess. I see this in my own two children who are also in this age group. Often have to tell them that "the real world" ain't something they see on TV.

Ms Marva, I know exactly how you feel. My "baby brother" was on a path to real self distruction (at best) a few years ago. It was hard on all of us. Talking to him and praying for him seemed to be falling on deaf ears. He was really in a bad way. As he hit rock bottom, my mother and I came to his rescue - as in the past - but this time it was different. He left his environment and moved in with me. He literally had no place to go. He was isolated when he moved in with me so therefore, he was able to start getting rid of his own demons. Just when he was at his lowest point, he hit a break through. He claimed it and was able to turn his life around. That was nearly 25 years ago.

I believing and praying that your brother will understand the lesson, but in learning that lesson you may be challenged once again to be there to help him threw it.

(I was wondering if I should put all this in this comment. Then I was kicked off the internet. When I got back on, the comment was still here...Divine Intervention!)

I thought I was going to miss it live so I dvr-ed it. But, as luck would have it all the stars and the moon lined up just right for me to watch it live. What a great and moving night. Still get the chills just thinking about it.

There were so many great lines in his speech. I was so glad to hear the "Southside of Chi-town" come out. I knew he had it in him. So the "cave" line had me hollering and the "that's a debate I'm willing to have" had me jump right out the chair. That line, Chi-town translation: "Feeling froggie? JUMP!"

You right about C-Span - now they are truly FAIR and BALANCED. And you already know how I feel about Palin. Yes, the next 2 months are going to be something else.

Of course, you know that my formative years began in the mid60s when it was becoming o.k. to be pregnant and still in high school as long as it was followed by a shot-gun wedding or a move down-south. During that time, choice was not a legal or safe option. I know of women my age who, because of trying to self-abort or having an abortion, were unable to bear children. Making the decision to have or not have an abortion is a very private and soul searching decision. It is a decision that - whether legislated or not - will not stop women from having abortions. It will, however, result in women being scared for life or die if they choose not to choose life. While there are many alternatives to having an abortion, I think this is a reality that is not often brought into the discussion. It is for that reason that I am pro-privacy - which, I guess makes me pro-choice.

Nothing that happens in the Obama campaign is by chance. Everything - every aspect of it - is deliberately and methodically thought out and planned. Up to and including the Powell endorsement. I really believe that he (obama) knew this endorsement was coming his way probably as far back as April. This looks like a no-trump boston with 4 aces being played here to me.

It ain't no way that That One could raise 150 million have 100K at a rally in St. Louis and not be much further ahead than the polls are showing or being reported. In my side of the plantation, we are early voting and its being reported that dems are out voting repubs 3 to 1 so far. I know that anything can happen...but, anything better happen fast if Lt. Dan expects to win this election.

Had to have that same conversation with God some years to be "ready" and "willing". That "willing" part was really pretty hard cause it meant - at least in my mind - that it would mean that I'd have to give up something. Well, had to give up somethings but its all good (smile).

This is such great news. Truly a well deserved honor. Some years ago, I had the great pleasure of meeting one of the first Black women pilots. Her name was Willa Brown. What was truly amazing about her story was that she actually trained some of the Tuskeegee airmen at a small little airport in my (little and all Black) hometown in Illinois.
