I'm going to miss your voice and leadership. Come back elsewhere. Godspeed.

Re: links for 2006-12-13

Thanks for the link, Martin. We're going to start deeper linking inside and outside our site and we can add this, I think.

If I have an issue it is this: I routinely hear from people complaining that we don't have enough good news in the newspaper. But I rarely hear from anyone saying that we don't have enough good news online. Perhaps they know not to come to us for that or they know how easy it is to click elsewhere for information to brighten their day.

Re: NYT threatens Boston Globe?

Great concept cover! But it does age you, Bryan.

Re: Not the sort of innovation we need

You're right, of course, Bryan. Advertising/marketing creep toward "owning" the journalism of a newspaper -- news org, really -- is moving faster and faster and, unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, journalists have to make tough decisions.

But to your Twitter question about professional papers pimping out the front? Not ours.

Re: Is there any credible criticism of link journalism?

The other issue -- it's not a good reason, but it is an impediment to linking -- occurs when the newspaper publishing system and the digital content management system don't talk with each other. If I am writing a story on one system that doesn't allow me to imbed links, I then have essentially work the story twice.

As I said, it isn't a good reason, but it's an impediment.

Re: If I Wanted Monologue I’d Watch Letterman

Thanks, Jeff. I get more out of it from you guys than I put into it, which is the ultimate in value for me.

Re: Is Romenesko out of touch?

I don't know that it's out of touch. I think Romenesko simply chooses what he wants, just like any other blogger might.

I like his page views, too, when he posts a link to me. But there are many days when I would like to disable his site from the computers in my newsroom because so much of what he focuses on is such a downer...and the journalists take so much of it personally. But I read it and so often shake my head at my own industry.

On the other hand, I just got lectured by a real estate agent for publishing the bad news about national home sales, saying it depressed the local market. I said I understood, but I couldn't not publish bad national news because of its impact on the local market.

I'm one of those high-level editors, I guess. I just wish we would have done a better job preparing for the future back several years ago.

Re: Why do we listen to reporters?

I'd have told you not to watch TV news if you'd just asked!
John Robinson
