in Not the sort of innovation we need on Innovation in College Media
You're right, of course, Bryan. Advertising/marketing creep toward "owning" the journalism of a newspaper -- news org, really -- is moving faster and faster and, unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, journalists have to make tough decisions.
But to your Twitter question about professional papers pimping out the front? Not ours.

in Is there any credible criticism of link journalism? on STL Social Media Guy
The other issue -- it's not a good reason, but it is an impediment to linking -- occurs when the newspaper publishing system and the digital content management system don't talk with each other. If I am writing a story on one system that doesn't allow me to imbed links, I then have essentially work the story twice.
As I said, it isn't a good reason, but it's an impediment.

I think it's a great idea. We're going to start deeper linking inside and outside our site and we can add this, I think.
If I have an issue it is this: I routinely hear from people complaining that we don't have enough good news in the newspaper. But I rarely hear from anyone saying that we don't have enough good news online. Perhaps they know not to come to us for that or they know how easy it is to click elsewhere for information to brighten their day.

Yeah, I think that's the real question - whether people can *find* that content in the forest of negativity they encounter so often. Thanks for the reply, John.

This leaves me momentarily speechless. I'm going to miss your voice and leadership. Come back elsewhere. Godspeed.

Oh, I'll be back. You can count on that. In the meantime, I have more time to read The Editor's Log. :)
