I enjoyed season one of Heroes on my iPod at the gym, now I can't get it. Looks like I wait for the season to end and get it on Netflix - instead of spending $50 it will probably cost out to be around $10. And I'm obeying the law, not willing to bittorrent. Maybe by season end I'll get wrapped up in something as good that's not absurdly difficult to get to.

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

So if he was a good salesman he would have said "You need to read both these books to get the full story"?

Re: [bijansabet.com] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

http://www.igo.com has saved me a lot of hassle and made it easier to travel...

Re: My Week in Media

Thanks for adding us to your playlist!

Re: So this is home…

I knew this was just a matter of time. Sleep, Matthew is right, don't get behind. Mitch Joel has a good mantra - sleep when you feel you need it and don't wake up with an alarm clock. Of course, not being a new media rockstar, this is completely impossible for me and from what I've seen of your schedule you sleep less than me.

2. Stay inside when the weather is below freezing. Cold air can be brutal on your sinuses. When I switched from running indoors on a treadmill from running outside I stopped getting the heinous green and bloody.

3. Thaw out. After 4 days here in Northern California with as much time outdoors as possible, I can breathe easy and my skin has already healed up from the dry and itchy rewards of living and breathing heated, germ filled circulated air for 3 months.

I've never found any meds that work. Afrin can clear your sinuses if you need a break from being swollen shut but that can give me panic attacks and it can rebound so I only use it for a day or two.

-p.s. I am not a doctor, lawyer, or pharma sales guy, but do play all of them in New Media.

Re: The Ever Watchful Eye of Google

I'd add another often overlooked item to the list - although they may not be doing much with it, your ISP has access to most of the same information.

Re: Easter Egg Hunt

I've noticed that the volume of comments tend to relate to the type of content. If you are stating facts and educating people I tend to see few comments. If you are taking a stand on a controversial subject, everyone will want to weigh in with an opinion. If you are telling a story, many will want to share similar tales.

I'm not surprised a there are few comments on FAP, most people don't have much to comment on about information they are hearing, or understanding for the first time.

Re: Snapple Antioxidant Water is a Soft Drink

Soft Drinks = The New Cigarettes

Re: Snapple Antioxidant Water tastes exactly like water doesn’t

Soft drinks are the new cigarettes.

Re: Government real estate numbers are a load of crap

Don't forget, many government figures get "adjustments" or "corrections" on a quarterly basis. From an economics standpoint it's still easy to measure new media - it's the reach you have and the mindshare that you get. The difference from old media is that all that could be measured previously were eyeballs (or earballs), with new media there's also a degree of engagement - single visitors, vs. lurkers, vs. frequent commenters, vs. content creators, vs. A - Listers.

This is where the economics gets interesting - the value is a function of three variables - the reach of your audience, the degree of engagement, and your ability to introduce money into the equasion.

So, you have 1 million listeners, at worst you get an old school deal at $30 per thousand. This could be chump change if you have the right 200 listeners (i.e. Fortune 5000 CEOs) that are willing to pay $1000 each for some event you are running.

I think you are right on the mark, there's no measuring anything until it crosses to dollars somewhere, and the results could be surprising - there could be money to be made that doesn't even show up on the radar for 99.995% of the population, and there may be hugely popular media that is just a financial sinkhole.

Re: Julien Smith explains how to make money online.

Well, you could measure who had the most and best stuff, but that would be in the eye of the beholder. Is not necessarily a feed request, it depends on how the client handles the adding of the feed. If the client starts the add process based on seeing the file name feed or the extension .xml it may not have to make a request.

2. Opening the feed in a browser is a request

3. If you mean adding a feed as a live bookmark in Firefox it will request it once it's added and every time you start the browser when connected and it has a refresh which can be set by the server (and probably the client but I haven't looked for that in the preferences). Please chime in if you've done that, I don't open FF on my cell modem anymore b/c I have to wait for 2 meg in feeds to come down before I can browse.

4. A directory would grab the feed to analyze it.

5. Errors will depend on which side had the error, a client error may never get to the server and not show up. It's also possible that a server error would not be recorded.

6. It's important to note that most newsreaders will be requesting the feed every time they start (unless set otherwise). From what I understand requests for the feed are not a very useful metric, downloads of the media files are far more useful in determining who's getting the content.

The audio file is not actually in the feed, only the location of it, so you will not show a download request until the feed is downloaded and the user requests the file. If your newsreader chaches the file for you than you will have a download, but downloading the feed will not register a download request unless the client checks the feed and then downloads the file.

The other issue that clouds all of this is that clients may make multiple requests for single files before the download commences. As a result your download requests will always be significantly overstated compared to actual downloads. Bandwidth is a better measure of the number of downloads, but then this becomes skewed by partial downloads.

Just to mess with your brain a little more, there's also the issue of IP addresses. Think of this as the "ID Number" of the machine requesting the download. Unique IP's is a number that is very good, but this stat is understated because some ISPs funnel all requests through single machines (ie - all AOL downloads appear to come from a narrow range of IP addresses). Libsyn has a formula that they apply that takes into account your unique IPs and then does some guestimating (probably based on bandwidth and total requests) and draws a line in the sand.

If you look in the Libsyn forums under stats there's more there than you'll probably want to know.

This also raises some other issues that show how fragile a feed can be when it gets redirected too many times, hopefully this will shake out as more standards form.

Re: I Met John Wall at Gnomedex

Thanks for the shout out Paul! I'm not about to give up the 80GB of music and video for 2GB of space on a phone.

Re: Are Podcasters Slowing Down Podcasting’s Growth?

There's nothing on that list that I can contradict....

Re: What “The Channel That Used To Play Music Videos” Has To Teach Us About Video Podcasting

This is pure genius.

Re: What “The Channel That Used To Play Music Videos” Has To Teach Us About Video Podcasting

I think there are two things going against it, first there's nothing to dispute about a slam dunk, second, for a lot of readers you might be telling them the emperor has no clothes...

Re: Video is Easier than Audio

Ghetto video yes, but what about lighting, makeup and more difficult to edit...

Re: MOT #1: The Subscriber

Cool!
