For all we know the individuals who appear to show no respect for the hundreds of educators serving our city are the ones who dropped out, never taking the time to invest in their own education! That said, accuracy in reporting has been an issue of late with the Telegraph and in this article I see two potential errors. First, I would be very surprised if the camper in the photograph is Matthew Lefebvre. Second, in the fifth paragraph it states that FIRST team members on the Merrimack "Chop Shop" team need to pay $4,000 each before the school year begins. Based on my knowledge of the FIRST program, I believe that the team must raise $4,000 to register for the season, not each individual team member. Things could have changed since I was actively involved with FIRST robotics teams, but I think a reporting error is more likely. To maintain the respect of the community, Telegraph reporters need to ensure that their information is accurate.

Re: Nashua man was not treated, released

The headline and first sentence of this article make no sense based upon the remainder of information in the article!

Re: School board hopefuls ready to work

There is no one more qualified than Charlie Katsohis to fill the current opening on the school board. The remarks made by Hogan regarding Nashua schools not meeting AYP indicate clearly his lack of understanding of this challenge. The populations not meeting in AYP in our schools are small, but due to the size of our district sufficient to include them in our overall count. Certainly we need to continue to address these populations with research-based, targeted initiatives, but a "chinos and collared shirt" dress code are NOT the answer! Our schools have challenges like any other in the nation, but for the students and parents who are willing to be participants in the learning process and not just critical by-standers, tremendous opportunity abounds. Examples include the state-of-the-art HVAC and video production courses, the culinary program that puts out a fabulous spread, the pre-nursing program, the early childhood education program, the cosmetology program, and the college preparation program including the AP courses, Project Lead the Way (pre-engineering program), and collaborations with Daniel Webster and Nashua Community Colleges. Not many high schools have such a diverse collection of opportunities for those who are willing to take advantage. Our nation provides a public education for all students, but it is the students' responsibility to take advantage of this resource. Stop bashing our schools, teachers, administrators, and school board - stop being part of the problem and engage in being part of the solution!

Re: District talking of fix for schools

Those not familiar with the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation must realize that any one dissaggregate population (special education, ESL, bilingual, etc.) that is not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) can place an entire school on the In Need of Improvement list. That in no way reflects how the remainder of the student populations within that school are achieving.

It makes sense that our state's two largest urban areas are both facing challenges in reaching our goals. That does not mean that we do not have appropriate and challenging goals, it reflects our higher number of students in "at risk" categories. Assistance from the state, especially if it comes as additional funding for staff and resources, is a good thing.

I applaud every school across the nation for attempting to reach the nearly impossible goals set by NCLB and our NH schools specifically. With some legislative luck and common sense, NCLB will be amended to reflect more realistic expectations by 2014!

Re: District talking of fix for schools

I continue to be amazed at how angry and critical Nashua residents are . . . my background is special education and I have been in education for over 25 years! I get it more than you can begin to understand. . .

My point was not that we should ignore these students - not by any stretch - but that many in our community do not understand the challenges of a fairly large urban area with many special populations. We should continue to seek the best strategies to reach these students, but the community members at large needs to understand the real reason behind the corrective actions being taken. Our school system is NOT falling apart at the seams as these articles would sometimes lead one to believe!

Please see the following website for the types of revisions to NCLB I support: http://www.fairtest.org/joint-organizational-st...

These revisions would allow many more schools across our nation to set and meet realistic educational goals for all students.

Re: Train could cause major traffic tie-up in Nashua and Hudson

Seems that the city should have required this activity to happen after rush hour, say 9:00 AM instead of right in the middle of the morning commute into Nashua! You do not think those children turn into angels when they walk through the school doors each morning. Start parenting, stop being afraid to say "no", begin by being a good role model and paying respect to each other and ypur fellow community members. The following is from the Sunday Nashua Telegraph article inviting parents to the discussion meeting on Monday evening.

“Keith Bowen, assistant principal of academics at Hudson Memorial Middle School, said that over the course of the past year, there has been debate within the school about whether to level students. The end result was a decision to level students in math and language arts, but to mix students in science and social studies, he said.”

Too often Nashua leadership tends to present issues to the community in black or white – suggesting that there are only two possibilities, all or none. I think the quote by Keith Bowen presents the notion that there may be multiple and phased solutions that will best benefit all students. I encourage you to take the time to consider these varied strategies.

Both of our children are high achievers. As parents we have instilled in them the value of a quality education and their responsibility as a student to make the most of the opportunities available to them. School and teachers are not there to entertain them, like going to the movies, but rather teaching and learning is a partnership between student, teacher, and parent. Unfortunately, all students and/or parents do not hold this notion. Differing motivation levels, parental expectations, learning styles, and learning rates all impact the degree to which students succeed in our public schools. These same factors also determine the leveling of our students in current school structure.
I do not have a prescribed solution, but suggest that our solution must address the following;

•	Consideration of a phased approach beginning in grade 6 (perhaps leveling in one core subject that is very sequential, such as mathematics), adding a second core subject in grade 7, and perhaps one or two more in grade 8.
•	Opportunities for students to demonstrate that they are qualified to move into a higher level without waiting an entire year.
•	Criteria that allow teachers to move students who are not succeeding into a lower level.
•	Criteria that allow teachers to move disruptive students (those who do not want to learn, will not participate, and actively attempt to disrupt the learning of other students) into alternative classrooms for a designated amount of time.
•	Activities and assessments in non-leveled courses that accommodate all students, challenge the advanced and remediate those in need of extra help.
•	Professional development for teachers to develop activities and assessments to meet the needs of all learners in heterogeneous groups. No school in our nation can afford to “water down” any curriculum area just to achieve the goal of heterogeneous grouping.

As long as our high schools continue to be guided by the Carnegie credit system and colleges emphasize class rank, GPA, and the robustness of the students course load (how many AP, IB –International Baccalaureate – and Honors courses), our middle schools must remain the transition time from the heterogeneous grouping at the elementary level to homogenous grouping at the high school level. We have visited 7 colleges in the past 6 months and have noted that as they are deemphasizing the use of SAT and ACT scores, they are looking more closely at the course load of the individual of each student. We do a disservice to all our students if we do not provide them with a progressive, logical, and flexible transition from elementary to high school. Students within the middle school years progress and mature at very disparate rates. The course structure at the middle school should NEVER assume that there is a “one size fits all” solution at this level. In as much that this mind set is generally easier to implement it is not in alignment with the developmental needs of the middle school learner.

Re: South expects unexpected at Pinkerton

Why has the Telegraph staff not yet posted an update about the overtime win for Nashua South? Where do you think the children living at Brook Village go??? I expect our Board Members to speak when they have a productive comment, not just to make noise. Mr. K was the principal when both our children were there and ran an effective school with a loving, caring environment for all. I can only imagine how powerful these words will be when delivered from one of our nation's most eloquent presidents. I only hope that those who were "so worried" about the appropriateness of this speech will back off and let the message be heard by our nation's youth. Ms. Picoult is a NH native. Perhaps a statewide, group read during the summer of 2010 by all HS students with online discussion forums would be a way to turn this into a positive dialog and learning experience, rather than just the tragedy it is right now. You are correct that as normalcy sets back in the general public does forget - but never the families and those immediately involved, they will feel this pain forever.
