in Sweet Beans (Are Made of This) on Crispy on the Outside
Weirdly, one of my most vivid childhood dreams involved waking up to find all three of the cereal monsters perched outside my bedroom, Count Chocula beckoning me with "Would you like to have some cereal?"

The Cubanitos sound the best, but I'm always disappointed in non-Cubans' attempts at making Cuban sandwiches. The Angus burger sounds like a delightful, safer option. I'd go for the second of the pork dishes, but either sounds good.

in Jerry Brito - Your precious coffee policy on Jerry Brito
Thanks for the "Zellig-like." FWIW, that's probably not the policy I would implement in my own place, if I had one. But given that all quality shops are drawing lines somewhere, I don't think it's totally unreasonable. But maybe I just got frustrated throwing too many perfect shots of espresso into a blender at a different coffeehouse to have the right perspective on this :)

Oh man, that does look disgusting. Who knows how it tastes though.
I plan on making up some bacon bourbon tonight based on techniques I learned in New Orleans this weekend. If it works out I'll try to get you a sample before I leave.

Not quite the end of Prohibition. Low alcohol beer got a head start before the repeal of the Volstead Act. We still get to look forward to an all out drunkfest for the actual 75th anniversary of Repeal Day on December 5!

in Comment Junk on Will Wilkinson
You have to watch out for that sort of thing. For instance, I once received comment spam that included my own domain among the various links for Viagra, porn, and the like (should I take that as a compliment?). Without checking carefully, I accidentally added it to my blacklist. Had I not caught it I could have accidentally deleted all of my own comments.
I'm actually surprised that spammers don't make heavier use of that strategy. By including legitimate links in their spam, they could make it harder for us bloggers to sort it out, thus perhaps raising the burden enough that less devoted webmasters give up blacklisting entirely. Or it might force the creation of a whitelist. Something to look forward to, perhaps.

in Feeding the Horses to Feed the Sparrows on Will Wilkinson
Talisse was one of my professors at Vanderbilt a couple of years ago (for American Pragmatism). He was certainly one of the most rigorous profs I had there; you can see that in the transcript by how much better he is than Freeman at not reading his own views into Rawls. It's too bad Freeman seems to have taken the most airtime.

in Second Letter to a Young Objectivist: Human Sociality on Will Wilkinson
Great post, Will. It brings to mind a similar question: could Rand have ever written her characters to be or have children? Roark, Wynand, Rearden, and Galt were all either orphans or had non-entities for parents; they were essentially self-sufficient adults all their lives. Can you picture any of them as parents themselves? Or more scarily, Ayn as a mother? The only scene with children I remember from either major novel is a couple of kids scampering around Happy Valley. They might as well have been animatronic museum pieces for all the exploration Rand put into their psychology.
That's just one more example of where Objectivism doesn't get the sociality that's a major part of most people's lives. And having also attended an Objectivist seminar, I agree with you that it's definitely not the only one.
Keep the letters coming!
