in Game Thread: Indiana @ Penn State on Inside the Hall
We have to win today to get a two seed either playing maybe Iowa/Illinois? A three seed would have us playing Minn/Northwestern, Which I like better. Regardless we might get to play Purdue twice.

Can we talk about maybe who the next coach would be and when after the game thread. BigA I know you had the voting and I like the turn out but I truly think that no one will decide until the NCAA rules a decision in June. That can not be in our favor to get someone that late, in my opinion. That's almost four months after the season before we get maybe even started to pursue a coach. I know anyone could jump up and say "pick me" but I really think everyone wants to wait and see the ruling. YOUR THOUGHTS?

BrianK The decision might not come till August. By then we lose our recruiting class and take a hit for next year. They need to find one as soon as the season is over. Theres no point in waiting to see if we get sanctions before we pick one. Thats one reason why I think we will go with a younger coach. The sanctions won't bother them as much as an established coach. Hopefully they don't hire a head hunting firm and attack this as soon as tournament is over.
Jerry We can and will get a new coach after the NCAA. Matta went to OSU knowing he would not be in the NCAA and had a great recruiting class. Other thoughts:

1. we need a coach ASAP to recruit for 09 which happens in August
2. we self penalized already and terminated the NCAA's new whipping boy now that Tark the shark is no longer around
3. we are selling the IU program not one year
4. KS may actually have a case
5. next coach cannot wait until August to know where he is
6. if sanctions then its a pressure reliever , rebuilding year for the coach, new coach may want the grace period
7. IU officials cannot stand up to criticism if they wait

The bigger questions are: a) "can IU put a package together to get the coach we want and need ? and b) are we aiming to be a regional-based program ie Xavier ,or a national program ie Kansas,Duke ? This will determine the coach more than the NCAA

HS, I've read many of your comments but this is by far the best. I was reading all of the headlines above and the first one I went to was Pat Forde's "Five quality candidates to consider". I read the list and couldn't imagine any of them coaching right now. We all will start the chatter about who's next just because it is exciting to think and talk about.
But I totally agree with you. It is not time to start talking until the season is over.

HoosierSmitty Thanks.

Just ready to watch some basketball tonight. It's Big Ten Network...which means I have to suck it up and go to a Lafayette/West Lafayette bar and deal with Boiler fans...
Jerry I admit you make good points BUT I don't really see why we can't be supportive of the team and coaches while generating excitement about the future.

Most of us can multitask.

Most of our current players are coming back and our future recruits need to be exicted before they fester themselves into leaving like Vaden did.

Still I like your points because you are "focused on this season and we have wood to chop

in Report says Dakich will take over for Sampson on Inside the Hall
I have read just a week ago that Pres McRobbie called the NCAA findings "serious allegations of misconduct." Responding to questions, he said he had not spoken to Sampson this week and also said suspending the coach was not an option because of Sampson's contract. Now this might have been the mood of the moment or facts at the time. A buyout would be the only thing that would change the contract. I think tha KS feels that he is really innocent, then he will fight the battle and convenience the powers to be. We also have to take the following into consideration:
KS goes, Greenspan is in jeopardy.
There have been several wrongful-termination lawsuits over the years that IU does not need to fight.
If we fire him now or if we fire him at the end of the season, the results are still the same.
Myles Brand will see to it that IU reacts as he sees fit.
If IU is to get slapped regardless if we fire KS or not, than I say we keep KS.
I would rather have an over zealous coach that is doing everything possible about getting the right recruits than have a coach is making sure we only make 999 phone calls out of 1000.
I have read that the average NCAA mens div 1 basketball call made over the NCAA limit is between 50-100 calls. The average.
I'll give you that he should have done a better job tracking calls, but in my own job as a salesmen. If I had to be hog tied that I could not make but only 1000 phone calls during a particular time. Then I'm going to do everything that I can to push that envelope to be as success as I can. Once again we are talking phone calls.
Lastly, I was a huge BMK fan for many years but I have to admit... since 1993 I got tired of defending bobby and was tired of is BS that continued to drag IU through the mud.
It is funny that we will support a guy as long as he wins but if he loses then get rid of his ass. KS is innocent until either proven guilty or resigns or works out a deal. Period.

Jerry BC - a CALL acording to the NCAA is anything tha tis NOT a physical contact or a letter, so it includes emails, text and instant messaging, commenting on the same blog, faxes as well of course actual telephone calls.

I did not see any overall limit on CALLS in the rules but there could be . the limits are generally "n" contacts per player per recruiting period determined by high school class.

The Point: Given 1) different media counting as a CALL, 2) multiple recruits, 3) multiple reps of the university, 4) recruitnig concurrently it is easy to see how to blow the rules for CALLS.

I worry about proportionality here and long term fallout no matter what we do
TomCoverdale's Eyebrows's picture
TomCoverdale's Eyebrows I believe that McRobbie said that there was no provision in KS' contract for suspending the coach with pay.

CB,
Well put.

Not sure about the asswipes but I still like it. Here we are already naming names and no name has been better than KS. All the good ones are either taken or will not want to deal with our "supposed sanctions". I'm sure though that IU will give us what we want. Just like he gave you KS.

Funny, I wonder if IU has negotiated with Myles Brand to lessen the blow if we fire KS. If not, then why even consider the point. I think IU needs to hold its cards on this one a little long? I really have a hard time believing that we still won't get slapped either way?

in If this is it… on Inside the Hall
Jerry, I totally agree. I have yet to see one mention on this site as to what the rules are from the NCAA on phone calls made to recruits. How many, what time of day, what coaches, etc...but I have seen many comments though on how we hold higher standards for others than ourselves better yet quick to judge.

KS may have issues and may have knowingly "cheated " if so, then let him go and let's start looking for a coach today. I have a bigger beef, if he is guilty then he should have already left the day of the NCAA's ruling. But since he didn't then maybe he does know the truth. Maybe he made an honest mistake. But NONE of us know what KS did, or did not do, we just know what the NCAA claims. As mentioned by Jerry, these are "potential violations". It is possilbe that he thought he was in accordance wiht the NCAA rules.

Another thing, did anyone pay attention to the fact that the ruling did not come down from Miles Brand but the VP of the NCAA. This is a huge concern, if the NCAA really thinks KS is guilty as charged, then they can't have any mercy on IU. Maybe either we are going to get hammered anyway due to the fact that it might show favoritism by M Brand.

Many of us didn't like the choice of KS when he was hired but embraced him once he succeeded as our coach. Now that we have decided for him to go... we are ready for him to be fired but PLEASE beat Purdue before you go.....just don't seem right.

Lastly, I believe KS should have made damn sure that he didn't make the same mistake twice when he came to IU...and maybe he still thinks he didn't.

Something to ponder.

From what I can tell a FAX is not a call unless it is prearranged then its a call

Is a call to tell someone to turn on the fax machine considered prearranging a call ? A random email is not a call unless prearranged

From what I read about the rules it seems very very difficult to be squeaky clean when it comes to calls ..........unless..........you stick to the pure vanilla idea that a "call" is voice only between 2 people

Other areas of potential recruiting violations are clearer like, VISITS, COMPENSATION, CONTESTS, GRADES, CONTACTS, EVALUATIONS, MATERIALS USED etc

DO you realize you have violated a rule if you use Powerpoint to present to the recruit ?

I think we have all underestimated the challenge KS had to remain strictly inside all rules

in Sampson: White expected to play against Purdue on Inside the Hall
So, do you think it is more important that we know or Purdue knows whether he is going to play? How can that be silly. TPurdue has been watching tape on how to defend White since their last game and to know that don't have to worry....let'em worry either way. We'll all find out in 24 hours.

HoosierSmitty Exactly...Purdue is game planning to defend DJ regardless...it's not going to change Purdue's game plan, nor is it going to give us any advantage as a team to keep Purdue guessing, so why do it?

It's just my personal belief that it's unnecessary gamesmanship when coaches do that - especially a coach that has enough problems already.

in The Morning After: Ohio State on Inside the Hall
Keep in mind Disco B, that one of the reason why that OSU played so poorly was our defense. OSU was taken out of their game, not even the crowd with their white-out and home court 12-1 record took IU out of their game. With the guards holding Butler (who ranks 5th in BT) to just 4pts is a showing that IU has what it takes. I've been a huge Crawford fan but his selfish and freshman play has kept me from being the team favorite but he will be a force to deal with for years to come. I think I seen him play one of his best games all year, not because of pt production but 31 minutes playing like a team player with no TO's and 7 assist adding 6 reb's with 8 pts. WOW. Not to mention the D.

The zone is not only gel'ing but is used when need be. OSU is a great team that spaces the floor well and tried their 1/2 court zone press. IU played it well and with what has to be a game low 7 TO's. Overall IU did a great job in all aspects of the game.

SO let's give credit where credit is due, KS has done a fine job on executing a zone and has done a wonderful job on keeping this team on their toes in tough times. Noone really expected IU to excel through the toughest road win in memory at Illinois but some how this them continues to win tough games. We play only one true senior and to be where we are at today is unbelievable....whatcha say?

b_side Just wanted to bump the Crawford props while we're at it. That spin move on Matt "Sideshow" Terwilliger was redonkulous. It's that type of talent you just can't teach -- you either got it or you don't. But on a one-man fast break, with JC's back to the basket, Sideshow was just left flat-footed and dumbfounded.

I was a bit perplexed why we started JC over Bassett and Stem/Taber over Ellis, but Sampson obviously had his reasons. Given that we came away with a convincing W, I'm not one to argue. Ellis did some nice things slashing to the bucket, but still witnessed a few ill-advised shots that I'd much rather see flicked from the wrists of DJ/EJ/Bassett/Crawford. Know your role!

RD,
I saw the Eli, D'Man...he was wearing all black with red overvest. I never laugh so hard through the game. Guys, I don't always get to enjoy the came thread because I'm on the road and don't have my laptop availalbe. I usually read the game threads afterward regardless to see what I may have missed and of course your options. I think that Chicago Hoosier said it best, your guys need to relax a little during games. We all get excited and crazy about the game but to flip/flop back and forth all the time is getting a little old. We have a good team and still have a ways to go. Freshman play is huge on our team and freshman will make mistakes.
Sampson has only been with IU for 1 1/2 seasons, it takes time to build teams not one year with four year kids. I've been a fan for many years and for coach to come in and put us back in the top 25, all season, is great. I'm not sure Bobby, Davis or anymone else would have.

I've seen many teams play this year and there are only a few that look like a well oil machine. I hope the fans of other great teams aren't as quick to pick there teams apart as we seem to be, but IU fans do expect perfection......

tacojohn In the defense of knee-jerk fans like myself, that was our kind of game. When we went down 12 I refused to be excited about any comeback and sat at Kilroy's sullen for most of the second half. When EJ ripped out their heart, I was screaming obscenities at the top of my lungs. When EJ picked up that horrendously stupid 10 second call, I want to throw something. You can't not flip flop during a game like that.

in How will you remember the General? on Inside the Hall
Bob Montgomery Knight, (God in Indiana basketball) changed Indiana basketball forever. Sure McCracken put Indiana on the map but it was Bobby who lauched Indiana in the all time greatest college basketball programs. Say what you will about his rants and tactics but there is a lot more good you can say then bad. I'll let the 3 national championships, 11 big ten titles, Olymipic gold medal, almost 30 NCAA Tourney appearances, the winningest coach in men's NCAA history, and one perfect season that almost was two. Not to mention the good things like how he devoted his front row section for the handicap, not taking pay increases, graduation rate, running a CLEAN program, making men and basketball players out of just regular old high school kids.

It's funny how we all like to dwell on all of the bad constantly on every issues. I think at this time for our histroy sake it's about time we give credit where credit is due. When you think of Bob Knight he is not a person where you think "Yeah, he's an OK guy" It's either fight or flight with your feelings, your either love or hate the man but regardless you have to face that facts of his accomplishments alongside the personality. That will always be and will never change.
I have heard more things called about BMK than I have about any other person, bully, child abuser, chair thrower, can't coach anymore, hasbeen, nutts, the list goes on, but let thy cast the first stone.......

Having said that, love or hate him, I think his good outweights the bad immensely and I'm so thankful that he was at Texas Tech when he retired and not IU. As I state before I can't stand Pat Knight.

Great game. As Knight always said, " it's not who starts the game, it's who is playing when the game is over". I always question KS during games on why he is play so and so and not somebody else, but he some how finds the key guys to play at the right time and win. I think we tend to forget who coach thinks need to be match up with who on the other team.
