LOL! I used this song for my Daily Self Portrait outtakes in January this year. I wasn't crazy about their video, though... I just like the song.

LOL! That's funny! I actually suggested starting a new media entertainment database 2-3 years ago on the Yahoo Videoblogging Group. Great minds think alike, huh? :P

He said if the series doesn't have a Wikipedia page, it probably isn't noteworthy. And since Wikipedia articles are meant to be sourced with big or notable media articles, the articles shouldn't exist if not notable. Only problem is that *some* poorly sourced articles still get through to Wikipedia under the radar... I've seen some really shitty, obvious autobiographical articles on Wikipedia before.

I spoke with IMDb founder Col Needham in September 2007 about this and his response is that they're open to web series being submitted, but said:
- The web production should be a series, not a single video.
- The web series has to have some degree of notability (not necessarily a certain amount of views, but big media news coverage helps too).
- The web series should be notable enough to have its own Wikipedia page.
- If there are enough notable web series submissions, IMDb said they would consider creating a new category for web series... but until then, individuals submitting web series should do so under TV Series.
Most people submitting their web series to IMDb are Hollywood writers/actors. The Guild, The Legend of Neil, Ask A Ninja, LonelyGirl15, etc. were all created by people already creating Hollywood or independent productions before moving to the internet. I think that says something or two.
I actually wrote an article about this for The Guardian in 2007, here's the article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/sep/1...

Again, the problem here is that "noteworthiness" is not a requirement for traditional media in IMDB. I think it is hard to argue that an independent short film which has had one festival screening is "noteworthy." Such films don't have wikipedia entries either.
I don't argue that such indie films shouldn't be included, but rather that the bar for web series is a great deal higher than for traditional film/television. Why should the delivery mechanism dictate a radically different inclusion criteria?
Thanks for linking to the Tilzy column, Rick.

Hey Casey, good article. Yes this is definitely not a new issue. Here we are almost a year and a half later and the situation hasn't improved. Even though Needham said they're "open" to web series, my gut says they really aren't interested/ready to embrace us.
Any may I add, a Wikipedia page entry IMO is a pretty obtuse requirement.

in Regarding the "blank meets blank" pitch on OMGRICK
I heartfully agree with you, Rick.
It doesn't sound like Liz understands financing very much. Sure, we can make our projects on the cheap... but the more financing we get, the more people we can hire to make something more wonderful. You can only ask so many free favors before you run out of willing contacts.
And when it comes to the debate of "safe" vs. "crazy", it's good to remember that it was a "safe" production like The Guild that got regular licensing profits, not the "crazy" RoboJew vs. Giant Nazi Woman exploits of Galacticast. If you want financing, you need a reasonable amount of "safe".

"Safe" is pretty much a staple of funded web shows, but I think we're starting to see networks take more risks. Can't blame them, though - they need to attract sponsors and I totally get that. Hopefully we'll see more ambitious projects courtesy of private funding as money loosens up.

in Regarding the SAG New Media Contract on OMGRICK
So your suggestions are 1. Null, 2. Don't use SAG actors, 3. Use SAG actors? Not much insight there, dude! For those of us who live in LA and are planning cross-platform productions, it is nearly impossible to use name actors who aren't already part of a union. I agree with Rick, we need to find a way to get SAG to listen to reason and have an indie option to new media. And I know from our previous conversations that you don't like conflict, but sometimes you've just got to storm the embassy. Don't quote me on that, it's a figure of speech... and you already made me sound like a reactionary ass in your blog post. Thanks, btw.

Casey, if you're talking about planning cross-platform productions and name actors of any real weight, then I would assume that one of those platforms would be mainstream media in some form or another. If that's the case, then it might be time to admit to yourself that you're stepping out of the league of the truly independent that you bring up here. And I would say congratulations for that. That's the goal, right? But with that goal comes the rules and responsibilities that go along with it. And that means playing ball with the unions, if you want to use union talent, until you're at the level that Rodriguez is and you don't really have to.
You certainly didn't sound like an ass to me, I mentioned that I have a very similar response when it comes to SAG or any union, but you did sound reactionary. Nothing wrong with that.
Read it again, and take a look at what I'm saying in the options that I lay out. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm trying to roll out other options to consider. I apologize if the insight isn't coming across clearly, but I'm not sure where the confusion stems from. I'm also trying to ask legitimate questions that I am genuinely curious about. As a producer, if you are living in LA and planning cross-platform productions, why is it nearly impossible to use name actors from a union? Why do you need to do it? How would SAG and its members benefit from what you and Rick are suggesting?

This whole thing is a farce... how can SAG just make rules without even consulting us? Completely disrespectful of our very indie industry. No wonder the actors prefer AFTRA.
