Update: Meet June 30th at MoLAA 5:30pm to learn more about the Art Exchange from the Redevelopment Agency..

in EXTENDED LAP on The District Weekly
It amazes me how an event can be held next to the Second Saturday Artwalk but yet noone mentions the "artwalk" in their write-ups.

Oh I did MYSELF - on another LB website that allows comments "but it was deleted by the site! In the "creative" column ;)

--> Here ye, here ye, if you would like to have a booth at the artwalk located within/next to "Tour", visit www.ArtwalkLB.com There still may be some time and space! <--

Art Matters? If it did, those (struggling & emerging) artists that are CLUELESS about the animosity between the different art groups (inside and outside of the eVillage) wouldn't be snubbed. Will these groups EVER work together?

ALSO - in case you didn't know - you can learn more about The ART EXCHANGE at one of the PhantomGalleriesLA.com exhibits. This is where YOU, the artist and artlover can make your ideas, concerns, and suggestions known. (To read an OLD post about the A.E. visit http://blog.longbeachculture.org/?p=92 ).

And - as I posted on 562CityLife, "No one website will include the whole lineup because sometimes the art scene is spontaneous and undaground - totally organic." However please delve into the websites you see including www.RULongBeach.com to familairize yourself with the creative class - the individuals whose talents are showcased making any community art event what it is!

This was written by a previous volunteer at Tour Des Artistes and University By the Sea - me!

in DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES PETITION DLBA TO FIRE KOJIAN on The District Weekly
Somewhere in the tons of non-edited video footage, I have the guy who received acolades for the Long Beach Bike Fest that just came through LB earlier this year saying that it wasn't HIS idea, that the city manager handed it to him saying it had been on the shelf for a while.

What we should do is make sure in those circumstance(s) that the idea/event originator has first dibs to be involved/produce it when it DOES take off, possibly years later.

So yes, to repeat LBresident, "which ideas have not been approved?"

What's the status of "University By the Sea" (which I think/should always be tied to Smolarcorp.com )?

Is THAT happening this year?

That would be my first suggestion echoed by many: Bring back U-Sea! Maybe have
U-Sea and Sea F - festival work together!

LB City Girl, regardless of political party I believe Kojian nurtured, if not encouraged, votes for Obama. That weighs heavy in my book.

My personnel background in both California (private sector) and Hawaii (an employment-at-will state), termination usually involved a warning (verbal and written)from the employee's superior.

I know the DLBA org and fees paid by those concerned create a totally different scenario, but can't there be a win-win here? I live downtown, walk around and after reading some neg comments about the cleaning people, well I don't want to lose that service DLBA provides.

Why not implement:

Step One

Implement NowGetSocial.com to rank the "Requests for Change" you want in the DLBA. Voters should use REAL NAMES for accountability/specifics which would also avoid duplication of votes.

Step Two

Evaluate the response...

In the meantime ponder a replacement: Would you want a person be brand new to LB with proven track record from a Top 10 City? Or someone who has served on the board previously and has allegiance to current and past "ties"? Is the person who started the petition interested in the position? Will that person be doomed from the start because of the economy and/or look successful as the nation picks up from a recession?

more of the same Weighs heavy in your book "bad", or heavy in your book "good?"

in DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES PETITION DLBA TO FIRE KOJIAN on The District Weekly
Thanks for the reply, Toad.

Google "Kraig Kojian" and "Obama" and you'll get my point.

I'd rather NOT have someone "who would sell their souls to the devil himself to land that job." I don't want that person OR some sneaky mysterious instigator, either.

If you want accountability or a reallocation of funds ask for it. If you want an up-to-the-minute (or so) "vote" from those concerned on how monies should be spent, utilize the site that BILconference used (during TEDweek) called http://www.NowGetSocial.com -> BIL scheduled the most popular speakers according to popular vote and availability, almost real-time <- Win-Win

If you want the leader of an organization to take a paycut, well why not request that of ALL orgs across the city, inviting the leaders to boast how the savings are reallocated.

Note: My thinking stems from being an HR Manager at a private company that went through alot of management changes. That is not always the answer.

Kojian has to GO!! HR managers are typically not the sharpest business people. The reality is that in THIS market the talent pool is huge. Kojian makes around 150K a year plus he has his expenses paid by the tax payer which probably puts him around 250 all in. Get rid of him and interview the talent pool of execs that are out of work do to the down turn. They're smart, motivated and ready to make a difference.
The Toad Don't think for one minute that I was advocating for anyone who would sell their soul to get the "job". Rather, I was trying to point out the reality of how people are selected for plum jobs in quasi-governmental entities in good old Long Beach.

I can't find my comment that included the statement "I never had a conversation with Kraig Kojian but I credit him for Obama votes.

Do you moderate your comments?

Jusy wondering.

KaRi from LBweekly.com

PS I also asked who WANTED Kraig Kojians job?

The Toad Your comments are still up; you just need to look for them. I have to admit to being quite confused about your comment "but I credit him for Obama votes." Consider yourself politely invited to explain.
As to who might want his job, I believe that, for what he gets paid, there are thousands of people in Long Beach alone who would sell their souls to the devil himself to land that job. And that is probably a prerequisite to apply for the job.

Great plug for CityofNeighborhoods.com

I find it interesting that their is absolutely no mention of
LB's East Village Arts District.

What a great opportunity to promote Tour Des Artistes. Lost.

PS I want to hear more about Belmont Shore's alcohol problem.

Hi again. I'm not on either side here.
I don't have all the facts to form an opinion.

I've never had a conversation with Kraig Kojian
but I DO credit him for Obama votes.

Looking Forward to what the Art Exchange Visual Art Center has in store.. I hope they include audio and audio-visual as well ;)

Classrooms should have dual purpose as exhibit space with retractable movie screens for projection. No white walls!

I am SO looking forward to this grand opening in a year or two (?)

Great job, Kerstin!

I called about that property about 10 years ago suggesting they make it into a parking lot. I was told that it had been a gas station so it needed to be tested for a year by the EPA before anything happens.

I did the same re: property by the pier. At that time, the empty dilapidated building said "House of Real Estate." (An oxymoron, don't ya think?)

Anyway, I traced it to owners in OC who agreed they DID need to do something with the property they inherited, NOT just let it sit there.

I offered to rent it from them monthly, however committing to one year paid up front. They want $200 more per month and didn't want to make any improvements to the property.

My initial idea was to sell local art and music (at that point ThePrimeSpot Private Art & Music Collection was 20 local CD's and about 3 paintings but I was going to add wind-up-solar-powered radios and beach towels* to inventory.

(* Rainbow colored on one side, solid color on the other side of the towel - to advertise "preference" as you lay there worshipping the sun ;)

Anyway, sometimes just "stirring it up" can have an affect. Personally, I'm glad I never opened a business however the biz that secured that location seems to be doing fine!

PS I took a picture of the COMING SOON banner at 4th and Cherry then researched the web for its meaning. That was before this great article came out!

PPS Kerstin, can you affect Pat West to support Long Beach Community Television on traditional TV?!

in What is YOUR use for Twitter? on Mr Tweet Blog
Since everything I post to my site(s) = local, I post the answer of THIS question to Twitter: "What are you THINKING right now?" That's because I usually have lots of thoughts and usually THINK doing before doing something!

Most of my posts are worldly, not local. Also, sometimes I post major news before the associated twitter does (ie. Biden=VP, also I've posted earthquakes within a minute of them happening).

I can see companies all over the world using twitter for project updates....

debzwalking I'm fairly new to Twitter, and am enjoying it immensely. There's a ton of interesting tidbits given by people from all over. I'm reading new quotes, finding articles and blogs I would never have otherwise discovered, and just basically expanding my view of the world.

I'm definitely in the learning mode at this point.

in Why it's time to break out of Twitter (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I follow news sources on Twitter. Some national, although I am most of my sites are all about Long Beach, CA Suprisingly Obama and Google News follow me!

Recently I performed an experiment via twitter/blog (highlighting a text chat)
updating during the Academy Awards / Oscars. It DID prove my thoughts: That people would subscribe to get the latest moviestar news, then UNsubscribe when they learned I could care less about fake dialogue and I hate the paparazzi!

I follow YOU, Leo, Scoble, etc. because I am trying to learn about new technology via osmosis. I'm the one who called into Leo's show in 2005 about podcasting and he referred to me as the Long Beach "Queen of Media" (back then I also wrote for a Signal Hill /LB newspaper).

Anyway, it's ALL good.

If I owned a company, I'd write "updating projects via twitter" into the job descriptions. It can really be a productive tool, saving time and money!

kAri bArbA's artwork is beautiful, and I don't even have a tattoo! I always said that if I were ever to get one, it would be of TWO hearts, one on the inside of each thigh so when they rubbed together they'd bring me good luck, ha!

Seriously, her paintings of trees are pretty cool, too.
Just saw them on her myspace page.

That's the shortest story EVER.

But so was his visit... too bad he didn't arrive later
or, better yet, the artists should have started on time.

The event was supposed to start at 5pm.
