AMEN! My business is a Christian Direct Sales Company that I have had for over 23 years and I knew and interacted frequently with the founder, Mary Kay Ash. One of her favorite quotes was "you may be the only Bible that some people will read."
She was an incredible Christian role model, but you did not hear her trying to force it upon others all the time. With a Company the size of Mary Kay Cosmetics, she was smart enough to know that not everyone in the busines was a Christian. Leading by example was a much better way to influence those who were not Christians, than mandatory bible study, etc.
Don't get me wrong, it was crystal clear that Mary Kay and her Company was Christian. She never hid that, but she didn't use it as a way to force her opinions on others.

I'm always open to trying new ideas with marketing. This could be too early for some to catch on, but I see potential as a marketing tool for our existing customers who want to be the "first to know about any promotions/sales that we are offering.

Have you considered joining a structured referral based organization like BNI ( I belong to that one) Attend events where your target clients are attending and get to know them. Also, have you considered using social media (twitter, facebook, myspace, etc) to grow new relationships who might end up being your customers? I would hate to see you set yourself up for failure. In my 23 years in Direct Sales, I have NEVER seen these kinds of advertising pay off. Having been recently audited by the IRS, I recommend that you save everything for 7 years. The time spent recreating documents when you are audited is time away from your business and making money.

Start with your circle of influence, that is, friends, family, neighbors and people from church, sports or other activities. Decide what your ideal customer looks like. Find places where you can interact with your ideal customer. Most importantly, ask for referrals. Although the local Chamber of Commerce may be helpful for meeting other business people, a structured business networking group will give you a much higher return on your investment. I belong to BNI and highly recommend it for relationship building and qualified referrals.

I believe that you can't motivate anyone. It comes from within. But here is something that motivated people are sure to enjoy!

I don't think that those forms of advertising gives you the best return on your investment. I recommend BNI. That is a structured group that develops relationships to share referrals. Look online for your local chapter.

I have seen many people through the years who were very unhappy and unfulfilled with their jobs, but needed the income so they couldn't leave. That is the best time to start a business on the side. I recommend using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and others to build relationships first. People always want to do business with those that they know, like and trust. Become one of those!

You really need to feel the fear and do it anyway. If you have a good relationship with the person who helped you get started in your business, take advantage of all they have to offer you in encouragement and support. There is one simple rule- You cannot motivate anyone. Motivation comes from within. You can educate, inspire, offer incentives, lead by example, but the sales professional must be trainable, and self motivated ultimately to succeed. Sales mentoring is another very beneficial system of accountability that helps increase success.

Many Sales Directors like myself use Virtual assistants to help them with their business. Real estate agents also offer the same thing. Why not look on craigslist for those type of things. Once you learn the skills for one business they often refer others to you. Good Luck!

Social media is a great way to build relationships online. I would start with FACEBOOK, Twitter, and Linkedin. Once you become comfortable there are many other places online to find other professionals. Become friends with other business owners in your community and/or online with social media. I belong to BNI and personally feel that it is a great relationship based business referral organization. It all starts when you grow relationships so that they want to do business with you.

Everyone likes something FREE, particularly when it has great value attached to it. Find a way to start each business relationship with an offer to give with no strings attached. Once a potential customer learns to know, like and trust you they will want to do business with you if they are in the market for your goods or services AND you make it easy and convenient to buy for them.

My suggestion is to explore the marketing plan. Each company is different. My company is not multi-level because there is on ly ONE wholesale purchase with the same price to the entire sales force and ONE retail purchase by the consumer. Look at the support that your company will provide. Do they have a product to sell, and most importantly are they willing to invest the time in teaching you how to become a sales professional?
