stevegotz I had an interesting conversation with someone from IBM's European VC Centre before I left and the feeling was that the ecosystem is progressing to the point where something like this would be very feasible. They are looking to do something around their Smart City initiative which could dovetail nicely with something like TechStars.

In relation to Stone's comments - sure they're are lots of patents out their that the big bboys have sitting on their shelfs/. However if your startup can gathner in more users, quicker than they can and show some value they are far more likely 2 have an acquisition talk 4 what u have.

Fred, I agree that min/micro/very-specialised (think vertical) feeds are where things are moving towards. The Twitter and other mini feeds are becoming easier 2 use, getting more adoption, very fast 2 grow via its own buzz/network etc.
The potential is there (as long as they can prove the right foot-traffic) but very few have figured out how 2 monetize it correctly.

I like the looks of http://www.nooked.com and others where they are moving into very specific arenas and going after vertical alliances which are clear and precise both from a customer acqusistion aspect and "wheres-the-money".
I know nooked is pushing 2 become a platform player.

Without the "aggregating all your social media" and going 2 pull/sync data on the other social sites I don't see it really working.

but what I know - I'm not their market segment.

I do plenty of 4x4ing and remote camping etc.. but nearly always on defined trails and paths. It is REAL unusual to go off track or where there is NO track. Normally there is a reason...

Now saying that over here (Colorado) has a lot more open space (and nearly all forestry is 'open') than in IRL/UK.

Paul,

I havn't seen that but then I normally map RoR into my already created db scheme (do don't normally have "id") on its own.
Normally dabble with Postgres but will checkout on MySql next time.

Is this just a 'recent' issue u've spotted?

I'm working with a startup doing something radical in the e-paper arena so the 'potential' is out there. Getting it to market is a challenge as its a radical shift in normal perception and usage.
time will tell.

The NY reader is a very fine piece of software but will never make it mainstream. Its more a 'look this is what we can do'.

IIBN 'sounds' good but are we getting into 2 many 'orgs' trying 2 do similiar stuff?

It'd be great if u can get Dublin-London more on the same track some movement and sharing between them. glad 2c some heavyweights getting involved (and Claire has some good blog postings)

PS the site has a logo/logon and basically no entry!

in Mozilla, tell me you’re joking about the mobile web - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
so just because he has the same first name as me doesn't mean is has my wonderful insight, vision, brain-power, sex-appeal (ok maybe going 2 far there!)

Mobile will BE the way of the future. anyone who can't c that is stupid. HOW web/email/systems/appls will be accessed - thats a whole other ballgame.

Mobile access to the internet is only in its 'baby steps'

Paul,

congrats on the mentoring. Kudos 2u 4 being approached like that - shows how your own personal/profressional PR/help-out approach can really make a difference.

Some strong words there but sometimes you need 2 get some smoke going 2 get action.

Interested in chatting with some more on this topic (especially in relation to 'startup' help etc..)
