in If You Care About Hitting For The Cycle, You Are Dumb And You Should Feel Bad on MOUTHPIECE Blog
Did you know Chicago has a hockey team? They play in the National Hockey League. They also played their first playoff game in seven years tonight, in Chicago, at the United Center. Some people in Chicago who like Chicago teams went to the game. It seems to be a popular Chicago sports topic.

in Golf Announcers Are Just The Best on MOUTHPIECE Blog
So the biggest golf tournament of the year is in its second day and this is as close as readers get to a mention of it? Alas, you did not even mention in the post that this is from THE MASTERS, which is ongoing. Oh well, at least I know where to go if I want to find out what Joe Crede likes on his pizza or what size of boxers Ozzie Guillen wears.

Simmer. You really need Mouthpiece Sports Blog to remind you the Masters is today? You really want us to analyze how Tiger's round is shaping up? In a world where you literally can't stumble onto a sports web site without being faceplanted by Masters coverage, you're really that starved for my take on Jeev Milka Singh's approach?

in A Harsh Sentence For O.J. Simpson Will Get Us Nowhere on MOUTHPIECE Blog
While realizing this post was not to get into factual details about the case, just a clarification that the minimum he could receive is 6 years. He is guilty of 2 counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon (minimum sentence 6 years) and 2 counts of armed robbery with a deadly weapon (minimum sentence 3 years) among the other charges' penalties which will run concurrent. If the judge allows all charges to run concurrent the minimum sentencing is 6 years, if she does not, the minimum sentence will be 18 years (6+6+3+3).
The difficult issue the judge has to wrestle with (and creating wet dreams for law nerds) is whether OJ's sentence will be enhanced based on prior acquitted conduct. This says sentencing could technically factor into any judgment against him where the preponderance of evidence was used as a threshold to determine guilt, thus his guilty verdict in civil court could be used to sentence him Friday as a person responsible for the murder of two people despite being exonerated from this charge in criminal court, where the threshold of beyond a reasonable doubt exists. Simpson may in fact "deserve" one under a strict legal definition after all.

That was taken at UNLV, where they sell beer and top shelf liquor at college football games. So awesome. You want to see wide eyes? Look for a group of 45-year-old Iowa State fans who just found out they can get Patron in plastic cups at a college football stadium.

in Obama Will Make Everything Better on MOUTHPIECE Blog
I am a little unsure as to how "non-BCS conferences" are incorporated under the current system, so please offer clarification if someone knows better. Right now, it looks like BCS conferences are ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Independents (does this include someone like Boise St. from the WACC?), Pac-10, and the SEC. Also, it looks like most big-time teams play four non conference games and have a bye, resulting in a regular season that lasts from the last week of August until the first week of December at the latest. Eliminate one non-conference game to get the shortened season and one conference game. Teams must play all teams in their division of conference though i.e. "Big 12 North" must all play one one another.
I believe a playoff system is important, but I also believe the bowl season is beneficial from a monetary standpoint for programs, a chance for alumni to travel and see games and spend money which spurs local economies in bowl locations, and a chance for teams to be showcased on a national scale. I think bowl games are good for college football, and I also love the college FB regular season.
That said, I believe a good playoff system would work the following way: Each conference plays a championship game (this should be required - the big ten sucks by not doing this) and the winner of that title game should go on to the playoff system. This would include conference title game winners of: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-10, & SEC. The top two independent teams would play each other the last week of Nov/ or first week of Dec (according to current BCS methodology of calculating pts for rank) for a spot in the playoff, as would the two teams ranked highest in BCS methodology not currently in the playoff as a result of winning their conference title game, these can be either bcs conference teams or indep. whatever the rankings say.
The teams would then be seeded according to current BCS point methodology 1-8 (and obviously with 1 & 2 on opp. sides of the bracket), with rankings frozen post-title game (thus it would not include the two "play in" games). December 13th, the first round is played at the higher seeds home field to give them an advantage and another gate. Semis both games are played on December 20th at the same site one game at 3PM and another at 8PM. The finals include only the two remaining teams and are played the first Monday or Tuesday in January on the 5th or 6th.
Any team not in the 8 team playoff still plays in a bowl game and are picked according to the current rules for selecting teams. The Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange rotate being the title game and can choose whether they want to rotate being a semi-final game and one being left out in a given year, or otherwise. Whatever on this note, but the other teams still play bowl games according to current way of choosing them. If you lose a playoff play-in game, you are still eligible for a bowl game.

After reading this a couple of times -- I had to go get a coffee to make it through the second time -- I have concluded that I like this method very much, and see no immediate problems with it. Let me go get another cup and read Doc Saturday and then we'll go from there.

If you aren't getting paid by the ND admissions staff for that post, something is wrong. "ND is a university where students are encouraged to grow and learn and actually be creative". Will let that banger speak for itself.
I never implied the University should be focused only on breeding superior athletes, only that for those who were wondering why your football team is in the tank, a quick glance across the quidditch field might be a good starting point.
A degree from Notre Dame now means.......that you have a piece of paper saying you were able to satisfy the minimum requirements to attain a degree. Nothing more, nothing less. Sorry, but just a degree from the institution doesn't get you the keys to the kingdom. It's going to take a lot more than a signature from the Cardinal's office to get me excited.

I read this post in its entirety.....thought to myself: Oh Eamonn, there he goes again exaggerating and making something out of nothing. Then........Then I watched the video. I let out audible "Oh my Gods" and just shook my head thinking about these freaks.
Now, I have more questions. I mean, was this type of shit going on when Joe Montana was running the show there? Did Paul Hornung walk through the quad on the way to practice and have to see this kind of non-sense going on?
These people that go to Notre Dame wonder why their football team sucks all the time? Take a look at the freaks populating your common areas. If I am a stud football player I don't want to have to dodge a "quidditch" ball while trying to mack on a lady. The general atmosphere there appears to have deteriorated from really smart, socially apt people who are on the path to success to kids who are both really good on their Mac laptops and really mad at their alumni parents for not letting them go to NYU or some clown school like that.
For those that went to IU, it appears Notre Dame is one large, all-encompassing, Collins-Living Learning Center.

in Tiger Woods Is Supporting A Candidate For President, But Won’t Tell You Which One on MOUTHPIECE Blog
I am confused as to how you didn't take it out of context when you and Mssrs. Brooks both refer to his statement of "making things more complicated" and how it can be used to infer/conclude which candidate he is selecting. Brooks says it means he is supporting Obama, you say it means he is supporting McCain, but you both base these statements on a comment made that in my opinion, and if read correctly, does not at all relate to who he is supporting for President.

OK, then I made that confusing, because it was early and my brain wasn't working very well today. But I see what you mean now, and no, I don't think the "it makes things complicated" means he supports Obama specifically. My bad.
Now leave me alone. I need a nap.

in Tiger Woods Is Supporting A Candidate For President, But Won’t Tell You Which One on MOUTHPIECE Blog
Completely, completely a thousand times over disagree. I don't know what you had to do to convince yourself of that half-ass argument above, but I recall reading an article you highlighted the other day where Doctors, Lawyers, Investment Bankers, etc were all coming out in droves as donating to Democrats by X:1 ratios (see also: mostly affluent whites). Tiger is a mixed-race African American who has dealt with racial biases as has Obama, there is little doubt not supporting him would be more controversial in my mind, regardless of target market (and Tiger has his market, salesmanship not necessary any longer).
As a final note, I believe Tiger, as he always does, was speaking generally and his quote has been taken out of context. I believe he was saying that, in general, bringing a discussion of politics into his life just complicates things, not who he will vote for complicates things.
