we were talking about it while spending Canada Day Eve at the wine bar after our trip back and I suggested the term "SkunkWorks". Probably too negative a connotation with the smell but on the positive side, it would lend itself to a cute Skunk mascot.

But Mutations is a cool name and conjures images of DNA and the X-Men.

that's pretty wicked, though we'd have a hard time dealing with that quantity of beef on a given sunday. Our freezer is chock-full of stuff right now!

Also, I am full of beef. *burp*

in Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman on dria
The Seven Samurai is a great movie. Check out some of Kurosawa's other flicks from the same period for more great samurai action (Yojimbo and Sanjuro are both really excellent). Toshiro Mifune's The Man.

Personally, I prefer the subtitles and have been watching the Zatoichi flicks with them in Japanese. I actually find the dubs more distracting because of the lip-synching and mismatched voices.

there's a boxed set of the entire series of 26 movies spanning 1967-2003:

http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00073K7J...

There are also 3 seasons of Zatoichi television shows. I haven't watched any of the tv shows yet, but the movies are fantastic and highly-recommended.

Not that big a leap to imagine Daredevil was somewhat inspired by 'Ichi.

in The sad truth about bookstores today on dria
Sander: I think our shopping methods differ. I almost always buy books based on recommendation. Occasionally, I will pick up something random, but it's rare. I think I buy more tech-related books than fiction these days anyway. Usually if a book doesn't grab me in the first few chapters, I put it down and rarely return to it. I feel shame.

Rehpic: I'm certainly familiar with dria's "Sheepy"... amusement. I don't think I'm comfortable with calling it a "fetish" though. :)

I feel it necessary to point out that I bought a movie (Crash (2004)) at Chapters which I couldn't find at the Best Buy we were at previously. I too looked at a bunch of books but didn't see anything I wanted to buy.

Also, why is there a sheep in a tub in your sidebar???

the dumplings *were* yummy. Magically yummy. With the dipping and the sauces... Just like Mei Ling used to make...

Alan: Preston Hardware's a good store. I haven't been in there in awhile but they have a lot of stuff crammed into a not very large space.

Also, don't you find Mac users really smug and self-satisfied? Boo!

I am somewhat alarmed that your blog is becoming increasingly food-oriented. This obsession with food is unhealthy!

Short answer: in a way. I think she was moved by him.

I like Lynch's movies a lot. One of the few writer/directors in Hollywood with the ability to experiment. A modern surrealist.

Yes dria, you're missing something. Mary and swap present good examples of what's useful about it. (I'm not a user). For me, it's interesting as an aggregator of what people are linking to, showing "what's hot at the moment".

Lately, for universal bookmark storage, I'm more into using Safari bookmark synching with my .mac account. It's quite nice, not to mention my bookmarks travel with me from desktop to laptop.

also, this textarea is far too small. :)

nice. It's certainly more organized than my current layout which features a bunch of random things all over it.

I'm hoping it evolves towards some sort of useful function. It's still New.

I'd like to see "snap to grid" and "arrange" functions. They'd make tidying a bit easier.

Who's this Paul Graham fellow you're quoting? I feel like I should know who he is. I also see that he's got some stuff about Lisp...

Can you program a Mac using Lisp? :)

you should read Mind Hacks. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be an entry for the "Internal Alarm Clock", but it's something I've done often. In fact, during university, I never used an alarm clock at all. Of course, it's easier if all your classes start after noon...

ps, you should create a category for "mean things boolean said to me today". I have an urge to say something mean and I'm worried it won't get saved for posterity. :D
