The site's goal was exactly how you define social shopping above: better purchase decisions through collective wisdom, and you're spot on that explicit content creation is a challenge, even when folks are appropriately incentivized (ie helping out a friend as through friendput). I think you're also correct when you say "actually buying...products is a much stronger signal of one's intents and interests"; looking at purchase behavior data across users, together with user intent as expressed through context and past behavior, might indeed be the way to get to your definition of "social shopping". Enter richrelevance :)

I look forward to the day when eduFire allows the best teachers to earn as much as (more than?) the best actors, athletes, and the like who right now have one thing teachers don't: distribution.

Totally, totally agree. Especially in our current Web 2.0, everyones-got-two-startups environment, it's critical to stay focused on what YOU are doing (of course, a peek now and again can be helpful :)

Totally agree with everything you wrote...the only issue is what if the investors you want will only do equity? Is it worth passing to find someone willing to do convertible?

Well, sorta...I don't quite live like that any more, but I've definitely been there. Shri, there's nothing I can tell you that you don't already know...it all comes down to doing what you want to do when your time is yours. If you want to do chores, surf the web and classes cause that makes you happy, then that's what you'll do. But if getting a film out the door THIS WEEKEND is what'll make you happy so you can have it up on your MySpace Filmmaker profile by Monday and in several short film competitions by Tuesday, then that's what you'll do and nothing will stop you. The problem with acting is I had to wait for my phone to ring for auditions...I of course did everything I could to make that phone ring with the rest of the time. As a filmmaker, you have *control*...you can literally take out your camera, shoot something this afternoon, cut it this evening, and have it out for feedback tonight! Maybe go find some kids playing under a banyan tree....

Actually, that leads me to another idea. Maybe instead of text blog, you commit to keeping a videoblog? That way you're creating film on a regular basis....

Very, very, very well written. I would look into getting this published in a circular. Sooner rather than later, while it's still timely.
