in CSX: Transporting a brand forward on Mullen.com Blog
This spot is one of my favorites in recent years because it's simple, and it uses one astounding fact to make a compelling case.

in Why NPR is the Future of Mainstream Media on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Lots of interesting facts and analysis here. But the business model of public broadcasting is so different from mainstream that there's no telling what would transfer.

in 11 Ways to Lose Friends and Followers Online on Social Media Rockstar
Many of the blogs I follow have really cut back on the number of posts, and I think it's because they instinctively understand #5, that spewing negativity often helps no one, and these days there's a lot to be negative or depressed about. While I agree with #7 if the goal is to keep all followers, I hope it's possible to address charged topics with reason and fairness. With the state of the press these days I think we have something of a responsibility to try to sort out information from misinformation and disinformation collectively. Thanks for the reminder of the basic landmines to avoid.

Brett Borders Everysandwich,

Politics and religion is tricky. If you go for it, keep in mind that there's a 90% chance that 40% or more people will disagree with your stance and feel distance from you, rather than closer.

in Brooks Bayne at Stone Bar - Table O' Porn on That's What He Said
Maybe it's a barometer for the band. If you can keep the attention of those sitting at the table o' porn, you're rocking. Or you have someone hot in the band.

I see the argument, but the venue is a convenience store, and "no lines" supports that broader identity. I wouldn't expect some haute bean action there to begin with, but I would expect convenience and an acceptable cup of coffee. I tend to believe that from the simple fact that they are touting their coffee, which leads me to believe they at least keep it fresh.

I'm with kidmercury. Journalism once aspired to fair and equal presentation of objective facts. In this election cycle, journalism utterly and spectacularly collapsed. Now all we have is "the world according to..." Great for a book or even a blog. Sucks for the Fourth Estate.

Thanks for the explanation. I never imagined mild chaos would seem like a relief.

I stumbled on your blog through twitter recommendations, and I'm delighted to find such usefulness in plain English on my first trip here. Personally, I put a lot of weight into the BDI since globalization increasingly seems to mean collective sink-or-swim, as well as for currently tragic personal investment reasons. I must admit I'm ignorant on how to read a few of these indicators. What would you consider a big TED? Wow that almost sounds like a set-up line for a joke.

Christopher S. Penn I'd consider a large spread to be 2% or more. Traditionally, the TED spread was fairly close to zero; at one point last year it was nearly 5%, when the banking system was just in total chaos. Now it's only in mild chaos.

in Something Important Is On The Horizon In The Music Business on A VC
Supported by advertising, just like regular radio stations? That's intriguing. In theory a streaming station would know all my specifics from the net and deliver ads laser targeted to my sandwich preference. That doesn't necessarily strike me as a good thing.
