Fabulous example of hypocrisy and link baiting.

I think Twitter is far from dead. They will work out their technical problems and move forward. My personal use *had* gone down though and you see people moving to Friendfeed and others.

I'm very open with my online identity, but that is because doing online marketing is my business. I think you have provided great advice here. If your business doesn't depend on you being highly visible online, it makes sense to err on the side of caution.

I know several other very active and visible people online who use an avatar instead of their picture. I always like to see what the person behind the avatar looks like, but avatars can be really useful for branding and consistency.

Thanks for a thoughtful post and I'm looking forward to reading your blog regularly.

That sweater rocks. But my favorite is the "sniff this" chalkboard.

"JUST LAUNCH" sums up the wisdom of your advice better than any other quote I could pull.

Do social meda startup CEOs have to do any hype before launch? *Real* launch, I mean. Not Beta.

Pre-launch should be spent building the team (who builds the product) and networking with influencers. Not to mention involving influencers in the design and development process.

Heavy promotion should coincide with a full launch, it is just a distraction until there is a product so sell.

It cracks me up to follow some of these links to Twitter accounts that have one or two updates. Come on people. If you aren't actually using Twitter, why add your name to the list?

I like the idea of using Utterz to do an audio version of a "from the rafters" post.

Old school forums work for me.

"Some of the “purists” on such networks might get offended that I mention marketing. But make no mistake about it, every single person on such a network is marketing!"

I just don't get this. Why are the purists so adamant against marketing? Without the 'ulterior motive' of building an audience (i.e. marketing) social networks would be much smaller and less interesting.

Thanks for this helpful post. I'll have to learn more about 9rules.com.

BTW. You are todays "ACE" on DailyMarketingAce.com.

Thanks for this resource Andy. At first I was thinking "Cool, a targeted social community for the Internet marketers" then I thought "Damn, I have so much to do today, I can't get sucked in to it right now."

Looks promising, though.

I'll be setting up my profile later this week.

@Steven Miller, are there really so many of these? I'm not aware of other sites like this that are specifically for the IM community.

Boy Annie,

PixelCurrents sure looks promising. It plays to your strengths, you clearly have a passion for it, and there is a lot of demand.

Why not start a blog on using WP but aim it at a specific niche. It seems like you are targeting small business -- boy do they need WP!

If you really focus on that one project and also clearly define a niche, I think you could have all the work you could handle.

Who want's a "real" job anyway?

Good luck!
