in WPUnlimited - Is It a Must Have for Serious Bloggers? on John Cow dot COM
I'd love to understand better what you mean about basic. If you mean the front end is basic, that is because I am no designer. If you mean the features are basic, I'd disagree. Import/Export of theme options, built-in SEO, SEM tools, AdSense advertising manager, and hooks system are features found in very few WordPress themes, including WooThemes and WPZoom.

Hi Ken,
WPU is really for the new blogger or the blogger that doesn't want to have to dig around in code. Thesis is for people that only care about search engines, and those that are very wise in code. Try to customize Thesis and you'll see what I mean. There are so many custom functions files, that Thesis doesn't look like a normal wordpress theme when you need to directly edit its code.
WPU is really for someone that needs to be able to upload a header images, a background, change some colours and start blogging, or someone switching from another content management system without the understanding of how to edit WordPress themes.
They both are focused on search engine optimization, but thesis takes that many steps further. Thesis is also moving towards an online magazine audience, where WPUnlimited is more for businesses, new bloggers, and new WordPress users.

Congratulations. :) Always nice to see more success bestowed upon GE members. Don't forget about us "little" people.

in What’s the point of community on Fun with WordPress
I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this. I don't see things in this matter even close to the same as you regarding how themes and plugins should be managed on community sites. I think that denying premium themes access to the features that have been implemented in WordPress though not allowing them to put their theme on WordPress.org's plugin and theme repositories is a bad thing. I think that the fact that Automattic makes HUGE money on WordPress, and works on ways to limit or deny other contributors the same opportunities is horrible. I agree with many others that a company that is generating profit shouldn't be leading an open source community because they will always make movements to secure their profits. And this goes double for a company that is partially supported by VC money.
This is just my two cents that could be part of a much longer, and well thought out post on this topic. You bring up some great points, but I think you've totally avoided the business issues in this conversation which are only important because they are the motivations behind the movements that Automattic is taking with the company and as such, the project and software.

Thanks for the link and the mention. I really did want it to be a NaNoWriMo story, but I just can't pull that much creativity out in such a short period of time. I am currently writing about 2k words a week on the story, and looking to finish it as soon as possible. I will keep posting the story on the site, and once it is done, I'll probably go back, edit it and maybe get it self published for my own records and sense of accomplishment. :)

I think NaNo is a really difficult thing to do. If you have the wherewithall to plod on over a longer period the results are bound to better. I have been reading what you've written so far and I think you have the makings of something.

in Is BloggingPro next after WPDesigner? on Blog Design Studio
I just wanted to say thanks for saying such nice things about me and say that many people didn't like Blogging Pro when I took it over from its original owner. Transitions are never perfect, and there is always people that will be unhappy. Though if you want me back on Blogging Pro, you could always petition Splashpress Media to hire me back on ;)

It isn't his whole show that got cut, just its syndication on Revision3, and of course the shorter edited version.
You will still find Gary at tv.Winelibrary.com just like before the Rev3 deal.

Very cool man. Not many people went out and really tried to figure these things out. I hope you not only enjoyed yourself but learned something from the process. The site looks great! And yes, thank goodness for Elena's clean CSS. :)

Best Buy and Futureshop will have the iPod's a little cheaper than Apple, so grab it there when they have one. I know the Touch will be $10 cheaper than Apple Canada.

Glad to see you agree with me. I made note of the silliness on my blog as well. If this is the typical stuff we can expect from Mike over the next while, then I won't be subscribing to TC anymore.

in David Peralty on Organizing Blog Posts on Chris Brogan
First off, thanks for the link. The post was really more for those having issues with consistency in their writing or efficiency in getting posts out there. Some people find writing blog posts a daunting task, and so I wanted to break it down so they could hopefully make it through the process of idea to publishing much faster.

in 2008/07/08/jskit-acquires-haloscan/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Would this effect search engine optimization that people do to try to use comments as a way to build relevance on their page. I know there is a cool social aspect to all of this, and I would love to be able to track my comments better but I don't know if I like duplication of content, and there is always the issue of who owns comments and how services like this would monetize (ads around my comments wouldn't make me too happy).

monetization is always an issue, yes, but js-kit is actually seeking to ensure that the commenters retain ownership of their comments across the web.

I really don't know if promoting such products is in your best interest. Anything that includes any hint of "spamminess" should be given a thumbs down.
I am talking about the spam links you mentioned in the themes.

Well for a few years I promoted Wordpress when it was full of spam links... hmm in fact it still is.
I also still link to people who promote WordPress themes mainly for the SEO benefit. As an example it wouldn't prevent me linking to Performancing ;)
Actually the whole package actually has less "live" links with unmodified themes than many Performancing themes, 2 within the default blogroll (less than normal Wordpess) and a banner, where there happens to be instructional content.
At the end of the day, the links in the themes are the ones placed there by theme authors, or the ones that fixed them to be more SEO friendly, and Jeff has nofollowed them.
What theme authors should be doing is fixing their themes, and then approaching Jeff to include their themes in his package.
How many theme authors use nofollow on their designer credit links?

Blog Badly - There are so many networks out there, that listing them would only mean leaving some out. I work for Splashpress Media (splashpress.com), and I highly recommend b5media and dailypixel.

preblogging - Subversion allowed me to keep the 40 blogs that Bloggy Network had up to date easily, and quickly. Upgrading them one at a time took forever. With SVN, I could do it in less than ten minutes. WordPres Codex Page on Updating via SVN.
Patrik - There are always downsides as well, but for the most part, yes it is an enjoyable experience. And remember, with all the blog networks out there, it can be as easy as creating a portfolio and e-mailing them to let them know you are interested and available.
Abdalia and Neil - Thanks to both of you. I am glad you enjoyed it. :)

The first thing that comes to my mind after reading your post, Scoble, is "AMEN!"
They were so dump, and I'd really love to see more people unsubscribe from them. I want what they did to really hurt their bottom line so that they never do it again. I don't care if they had press or blogger credentials, they run a blog, and they messed up big time.
I am very unimpressed with what they did.
Boo @ Gizmodo!

Other than paying off my mortgage and car loan, I would also book myself a ticket to every major industry event (both blogging and technology) around the world during 2008/2009 (since I have already missed some like CES, I have to wait till Feb of 2009 to go to them all).

Wow... While I can understand and relate to your comments, I really enjoyed the movie. The message rang true with me and my life, as I continue to live mostly through computers and technology and awaiting that next big phase in my life. The part where Adam Sandler's character is a very old man, basically on his death bed, and he realizes how much he screwed up, it is very touching.
I agree though that his character was a jerk, and kinda deserved all the bad side effects of the remote.

in Why A Blogger’s Union Won’t Fly on Webomatica
I agree that it can be difficult to get to the sweet spot with blogging, but again, I fall back on networking, and getting in with a blog network (one that doesn't pay per post!). Michael, who writes on a variety of Bloggy Network sites, was picked up after only like two months of writing on his own, thanks to his passion, and networking abilities.
Get in with a network, get them to agree to a flat fee, as you are worth that. Start small, and go from there. :)

I honestly think that everything that has happened with the repository has been because a member of the community (who just happens to be employed, or own, Automattic) thinks it is genuinely in the best interests of the community. I also think that Automattic is suggesting people do exactly as they do, that is, give away the code for free and charge for services.
As you say though we can agree to disagree. I don't feel particularly strongly about this issue as I am a big fan of most of the premium theme authors and personally find the repository useless, but I do feel that this issue has really lacked a considered and unemotional view. Hence why I tried to produce it.
I understand Jeff is interviewing Matt on WordPress Weekly Tomorrow though, so we can see what he says.
