Adrianus V Hoi Patrick,

Ik vind 't niet erg dat je reageert, maar dan wel graag in één reactie en niet tien verschillende reacties. Zo is er voor niemand een touw aan vast te knopen.

in GOP is Tone Deaf on Matters of Racial Sensitivity & Diversity. . . on Political Intersection
Another reason why I could never align my self with the republicans, let alone becoming a black republican lol. This is another prime example of the right being insensitive and feeling themselves a little too much right now, but what can you say? when you have rush and hannity spewing their nonsense on the daily, this type of stuff will represent the majority of the GOP..

Democrats 08! We did it!

Why can't they give AT 250 subscribers free Setanta preview as well? Why FSW en espanol? We want english channel, otherwise we would have been subscribing to Dish Latino.
I hope GolTV is back, because none of the channels they suggesting to us have La Liga & Bundesliga games.

It was mostly shoving and a couple of beers tossed around. I am not sure what the Crew supporters could have done otherwise because Nick was right about security. The stadium security was slow to step in and the halftime activities were only broken up when the police got involved.

I'm fine with strong encouragement. As soon as you require it, the vailidity, richness, authenticity of the content all come into question, and there is no way to authenticate whether it's the real deal. This is because knowledge sharing can be faked. The best (not absolute) guarantee of authenticity and value in this type of communication is its voluntary nature.

Dan Ariely's recent book "Predictably Irrational" surveys some of the social psychology research about what happens when you make voluntary acts transactional.

Very astute Mary. It's often worth pushing back at shoot from the hip responses just to get that deeper insight.

I think the "in the flow" uses (eg blogs as project journals/records) are perfectly fine - mandatory seems to hard a word even here though, it's just the way the job is done. (It does sound a little harsh to tell someone who routinely files reports as part of their job that it's "mandatory". It's just their job.)

But the push back, I think is not just from the fact that keeping a personal reflection and learning journal is "above the flow". It's also the suggestion that this can/should be used as a mandatory device to capture tacit knowledge. Personal reflection and learning journals are just that - personal. Some people blog their personal journals publicly, most don't. The voluntarism of it is where the value lies - as Dave Snowden says, knowledge cannot be conscripted it can only be volunteered. To make this kind of blogging mandatory destroys the value because it's no longer a spontaneous act of giving arising out of personal interest and insight - it's a "required" activity which will be judged on external criteria (these come with making something mandatory), and which will very probably be gamed in order to meet those criteria, losing in most cases a connection with the real person underneath.

Let's say all managers are told "you will blog every day". I know from personal experience that blogging frequencies and rhythms differ widely from person to person. Sometimes you need a dry period to be able to resume fruitful blogging. Sometimes you just don't have anything to say, in which case it is far better to stay silent. Individual sharing characteristics in mode, medium, frequency vary enormously simply militate against a standard that is applied to all.

So this isn't just a question of the integration of work. It's also an important question of power, autonomy and the space to share voluntarily.

in Knowledge Management Made Mandatory? on Above and Beyond KM
Hi Mary - kudos for pushing the envelope on this! My impression of Dr Vaine is that he is extremely keen on forced blogging. He sees it as a very good way of killing all spontaneous contributions that might interfere with work.

I do appreciate your point about establishing a rhythm and discipline, and sometimes people need to be encouraged (and supported, as Ron suggests) into this. We run regular capability development programmes for our clients, and we strongly encourage participants on our programmes to maintain learning blogs on a shared platform. We also provide support to help them blog. Some of them do, and do well, some of them just post once in a while and never really get into it, others will just drift by and comment, and others are completely passive.

I don't think we could enforce a compulsory journaling of this kind. Different people have different capabilities, some people are more about action than reflection, others are much better at organising other people's stuff, others are much better at face to face communication.

And corporate politics can always come into play - fear of saying the wrong thing, desire to say the right thing, writing anything, just anything so as to meet the mandatory daily target while developing a deep loathing of this "knowledge sharing" lark.

So while encouragement and good visible examples if fine for me, making blogging mandatory is a very dangerous slippery path in the wrong direction.

in How Fox Soccer Channel Can Improve Its Summer Programming on EPL Talk
While I have tuned in to watch a few of the Italian Classics that I missed during the season, I essentially stop watching FSC in the summer.
The biggest problem is the almost complete lack of LIVE games. Other than the MLS games, there is nothing.

If FSC can take a lesson from the success of Euro 2008 on ESPN, it is that the primary soccer-viewing audience in the US has a great interest in world football. While adding Serie A has been great, FSC has lost the rights to the Brazilian, French, and German leagues in the past few years. I regularly watched the Brazilian (which were on in the summer) and German games.

If it is a matter of rights and something to show live during the summer, I don't believe anyone has the rights to the Russian league. This is an increasingly high quality league filled with many players who end up playing in the EPL and elsewhere. Wouldn't it be great to see the next Jo or Arshavin playing during the relatively football-free summer months?

Finally, it is just ridiculous that the English-language FSC channel does not show the Copa Liberatadores games. I am not going to subscribe to yet another channel on a different cable "tier" for these games, but I definitely would watch them if they were on FSC. Not showing at least the semifinals and finals of this major tournament--which, again, takes place in the summer--is just another FSC decision that hurts many viewers and forces us to go without or pay more money. A decision almost as bad as giving up the early EPL game--not to mention the Monday games-- so we will either have to subscribe to Setanta or wake up to another mind-numbing infomercial.

It would be interesting to know how much less live soccer FSC shows now as a channel dedicated exclusively to soccer compared to back in 2004 (when I started to watch) when it was still Fox Sports World. My guess is significantly less!
