Stumbled upon this blog while googling Malaysia Astronomy. And you mentioned about Dr. Chong in your post, speaking of him, I have had a wonderful personal experience in dealing with him back in a scholastic programme back in 2005 and his spirited personality has really left me in awe and admiration. It's really glad that you met him!
Hi Mic. Tham! I agree with you. It's really a great pleasure in dealing with him. :d/
has anyone back engineered a Meade to yield an optical prescription?. I want todesign some auxiliary optics
I have removed the corrector plate from the OTA before but not the primary mirror. You could refer to http://www.astronomynotes.net/2007/01/08/remove...

You can look for more information at Cloudynights.com too.
I am now having difficulty collimating the scope. Have I gone beyond the point of no return? Do you think I can resolve culmination or do I need to send the corrector plate with the secondary mirror to Mead?

Thank You for you input.

Leo Gruenke

P.S. This all happened before I read you article
I believe that you're still able to get the secondary mirror back near to the original position. This job will be time consuming though.

I assume that yours is the same with mine (old secondary design (3 screws)).

1. Unscrew secondary mirror from the holder.
2. Revolve the secondary mirror by a few steps.
3. Screw it back and do the collimation. See whether you can bring it back.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you get a perfect collimation.

P/S: Try to screw each screw equally when doing the collimation as it is supposed like this. Don't overscrew again. :D

Hi Florian Wolf, I'll help you to get Tom's contact. His observatory is so nice.

If you can find a 16" LX200R, it's better to get the R than the GPS version. Are you going into astrophotography? If yes, Paramount ME will be a good choice for such a big OTA. By the way, what's your budget?

Look to the north before dawn. Since the radiant is so near to horizon and even hidden, we will not catch many meteors. :(

My address is grass, garden, my house, housing estate, Kluang, Johor, Malaysia. Haha.. :d

So nice that you got a such a long fireball. The longest that I saw was around 1.5s. I gave up my observing last night due to the clouds. I shall learn from your persistence. How much is the total that you saw?
Wow... can't even see the moon last night, at Morib:((
KL, Sel are too cloudy...So sleep early. But is it easier to see midnite or before dawn?
The fire ball i saw was just below gemini Pollux and castor.
I see. Are you familiar with the constellations on the sky? What's your level in amateur astronomer? I am a beginner. :)

I saw 16 meteors this midnight. I missed some as I was talking to my friends... :(( Normally, the best time to watch meteor shower is before dawn. However, it's better to watch whenever the sky is clear. For example, the clouds rolled in just after we observed for an hour plus... :x
i saw a fireball too last week...what's that very bright star over the SE? its very bright and big, is it holmes?
The very bright star you saw in SE was Canopus, the brightest star of the constellation Carina. It's not Holmes. Holmes is quite faint now in the NE sky.

BY THE WAY, I SAW 8 METEORS THIS MIDNIGHT. I shall post a meteor watching report later.
I have seen a fireball, brightest than any star in the sky on 4 Dec, at Tg Bunga Beach... so beautiful, and also fainter one although not really at geminids peak. Last night I saw 6 in an hour at a dark place at KL... Happy star gazing!

Seong Shan, you were really lucky! I hope you catch more tonight. ;)
im now at Quezon City Philippines... the sky is VERY CLEAR. the problem is the light pollution!
Carlomer, so did you manage to catch some? Kluang (my city) is having average light pollution too. The clouds are orange color last night. I've yet to get my SQM to read the Kluang's light pollution index.

Hey man, the time zone of Philippines is GMT+6? Don't give up, you still have 14 DEC night and 15 DEC midnight. There's still a lot of chances left. I am troubled by the clouds too. :(

Hello, actually the forcasted time is suitable for everyone in the world. The time which is stated in bold is the universal time. For us, it's 1am on 15 Dec. You just have to add 8 hours to the time in UT since we are in UT+8.

However, as I stated the meteor shower worth watching before the peak. So watch it when it's 12 or 13 Dec. The earth always hit meteoroids and cause random meteor shower. Geminid meteor shower is one of the annual stable meteor shower. When we see the meteors streaming through the sky, they are having friction with our atmosphere. Thus, heat and light are produced. It happens at the atmosphere, so it doesn't matter where are you located and it won't land at your place probably unless it's big enough to be meteorite.

The best place to watch meteor shower is a dark site. It's better to avoid the city light that causes severe light polution which blocks you from seeing dark features on the sky.

So, Jasmine and Lim, you might find it a little difficult to look for a dark site in KL and Penang. Beach is quite a good place. You may try it.

Lim, when is your birthday? My birthday is located at 18 Dec! <:-p

It's so wonderful to receive 3 comments in a row! Thank you guys! Don't mind to ask if you're still in doubt.
