I wanted a lighter machine, but the Air isn't powerful enough. The new MacBook is ideal. It weighs about a pound less than my old MacBook Pro, and with the 320G 7200 RPM drive I added, it's faster and has a larger hard drive. I can live without FireWire in exchange for a smaller, lighter, faster machine with a higher capacity drive.

Re: Silicon Valley Sightings: Sand Hill VC Parking Lot

I really got a kick out of it when 2 other Priuses parked next to mine :)

Re: Why Starbucks Coffee Conversations Podcast Failed

The music should have been "Busting up a Starbucks" by Mike Doughty :)

Re: Bad news gets worse

This is a very difficult thing to go through. I just lost my mom in December. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in late October and was in & out of the hospital since then. Finally the doctor suggested putting her in hospice care & a few days later she died. The last two days she never woke up, but I sat there and talked to her.

Re: Bad hosting day blog

I've had fewer problems with DreamHost than I've had with other web hosts I've used. The people at DH know what they're doing and they're honest about what's going on. One hosting company I used went down for a few days and when they came back up all the MySQL databases were gone. Thankfully I keep local backups.

Re: The call…

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Apple doesn't announce consumer products like the iPod at WWDC. This was all about the Mac and Leopard has some major new features. Time Machine is one of the most important advances. Most people don't make backups, so Time Machine makes it automatic and lets you revert to any previous version or undo a big mistake. There's also a lot of other cool stuff in Leopard.

Re: Ze, this picture is for you

Re: "Terrorized that they’ll take away my electronic equipment on flights."

My feelings exactly. I'm not afraid of a terrorist attack when I fly - the miniscule danger barely enters my mind. I'm more annoyed with the lines for screening, taking off my shoes, and taking my laptop out of the bag and hoping it doesn't get dropped or stolen. I'm sick of the hassle. I saw a huge difference just between flying to San Francisco for WWDC last week and flying home Saturday.

As long as flying remains such a hassle, I'm not flying again. If I do go to MacWorld Expo in January, I'll just take an extra week and drive cross country in my new Prius (which will benefit from such a long trip to fully break it in).

Re: GoogleTalk updates

GoogleTalk also works with iChat as a Jabber service.

Re: Web 2.0 logo generator, but where’s the stickr generator?

Don't put a sticker on your MBP - it looks perfect unadorned. I do have a sliver MacPad (macstyles.com) that matches the original color very closely to protect the finish, so the paint won't get discolored like my old PowerBook G4 did.

On the other hand I do have a white Apple sticker on my Prius (which I consider essential, along with a Darwin Fish, on every car I own).

Re: Why conferences don’t allow kids…

MacHack, which unfortunately shut down after last year, always encouraged kids. Most average users (non-power users) probably stick to standard applications so they most likely won't have an RSS reader.

The percentage of Mac users who use RSS is a lot higher, since several standard applications have RSS support built-in. Safari comes pre-configured with several RSS feed subscriptions and one of the screen savers displays RSS headlines. In Leopard, Mail can show RSS feeds as mailboxes.

Re: Little duckies head to Flock

If you want to get that song out of your head, see "Ghost World". Even a 2GB memory stick can't hold many movies.

The PSP has a beautiful 16:9 screen and it's also a great mobile web appliance. Unfortunately it's very picky about video formats (although the latest firmware improves that) and it won't play videos purchased in iTunes Music Store. Sony's new MYLO (is that what they call it?) looks like it's going to be interesting. It can play movies & do most of what a PSP does except play games plus it has a keyboard, which will make it even better for web browsing.

Re: Dreamhost getting sucky PR out on blogs

I've been very happy with DreamHost. Their blog told all the gory details about what went wrong and their status page kept us notified about what was happening. Most importantly, I've never lost any data. The gas mileage really is as good as they claim, but that's not my favorite thing about it. I really enjoy driving it. It's roomy and comfortable with a very quiet, smooth ride. I feel like I'm driving a car of the future.

Once you've experienced the pushbutton start & smart key system, other cars seem primitive. I never have to fumble for a key; I just keep the fob in my pocket. Also, avoid short trips. I find that my mileage is around 25-30 for the first 5 minutes, and after that goes up to 50 and levels off around 70-75 after 15 or 20 minutes.

Taking advantage of regenerative braking helps a lot. Instead of braking suddenly, anticipate red lights and brake gradually. I can usually get it to switch to electric by accelerating to 40-45 and then backing off the gas *very slightly* so it doesn't slow down more than 1 or 2 MPH.

Re: Apple press conference (the blue monster goes to Cupertino)

David Pogue gave one of the most entertaining sessions at this year's Macworld Expo where he did two great songs about Youtube and music downloading.

Re: Why Mahalo, TechMeme, and Facebook are going to kick Google’s butt in four years

I consider SEOs one step above spammers on the sleaziness scale. I have my Mac home directory mapped as a network drive in Windows, which I use to check out files. I've always had problems with VSTS giving an error when accessing the Mac drive. The latest version of Parallels is the first time I was able to use either Parallels or VMware without any VSTS errors.

I've even removed my old Office X (which I never bothered upgrading) and I can now have office docs open automatically in Office 2004 in Parallels.

Re: The Joy of Tech is hillarious…

SearchEngines appears to be a comment spammer.

Re: Plaxo is better than new Google Calendar sync

I've had lots of trouble with Plaxo. Was the situation in Iraq really so critical that it called for intervention? How many people died there as a result of Hussein's actions? Does the Saudi royal family treat their people any better than Hussein did? Was Iraq really a bigger threat than Korea? Why is it OK for Pakistan to harbor terrorists?

Re: I’m fighting comment spam

Comment Blacklist is your friend :) Just add the offending words related to gambling or pharmaceuticals to the blacklist and the comments won't even make it to moderation. Before 1.5 I used my own hack which checked the comment against a list of words and would die() with a nasty message if it contained any of those words.

Re: Army offers new recruiting incentive: duty

I'm going to puke.

Re: Good news!

This is excellent news!

Re: Coalition for Darfur: A prayer for the dying

Sheeeesh!
