I received a "crash course" in 21st century teenage culture when I started working in a public high school last October. Since I graduated from a small Christian high school, it was even more of a culture shock. Even though the school has a good handle on discipline and connecting with students, what the students take away from the school in the sense of values is minimal at best.


Since I'm a reading tutor working with just one teacher, I don't interact with many teachers. But I get frustrated when teachers can't see beyond the "attitude problems" these students exhibit. Like you, I try to see behind the defense mechanisms and reach out as much as I can while still teaching. I think many teachers forget what it was like being a teenager; like Atticus Finch told Scout, we've got to put ourselves inside their skin and walk around for a day.



I just pray that I'll be reunited with the ones I work with someday in eternity.

I very much identify with you in the spiritual gifts department. I am the one with the teaching, exhortation, and discernment gifts, and my husband is a server, maybe administrator--he won't sit still long enough to take a "dumb test," so my analytical self will never know. But contrary to what he thinks, he really was "born organized."


As for pink and blue theory... I'm still working through that. My experience has been limited to churches with mostly male leadership. However, spending my formative years in several different churches has taught me that there's an inherent danger in trying to interpret and apply God's word too stringently. When we finite humans try to explain supernatural and infinite concepts, we can inadvertently stay in a spiritual "comfort zone" and then limit His work. Not that we should leave the Bible in a mystic and ethereal realm; however, our beliefs and interpretations of the Bible should grow along with our experience of His work in us. I've always believed that if any of my opinions NEVER change or grow, then I'm stunted and stagnant.



So, Jonalyn, thank you for giving me some ideas to wrestle with and process. May God continue to guide you on your journey toward loving Him more than yesterday.

I once found one in Iowa that was bigger than my hand. It is called a cecropia moth. They are in the adult (moth) form for only a few weeks. In these few weeks their goal is to mate and then die afterwards. They also don't eat during this stage because they don't have a mouth. They look more like a butterfly, just really hairy with muted colors. And their legs have orange hairs and look like spider legs. I let it crawl on my hand for a while, but set it down when it reminded me too much of a tarantula. Creepy. They are really beautiful though.

Kate, it's okay hon. Don't give up. Just keep trucking along even on the days when it seems the words won't come. I'm an old pro and NaNo and I still get stuck. I didn't write more than 20 words yesterday, so I have days like that too. Don't give up. Skip ahead and write a scene that comes later in the book. Try your hand at your ending, come back and add a chapter in the middle or towards the beginning. Just play around a little - you don't have to write in order. :)

I understand certain people wanting to ride out for Hillary but I don't think they (CBC members) should support Obama just because he is Black. If these people are so called "Democrats" they should be rallying behind the party's chosen candidate regardless.


The question that is now raised in my mind is are these people not wanting to support Obama because of his skin tone or because of his stance on issues?

rikyrah, I am glad you posted the article about Cindy McCain's drug use and Old Man McCain's wishywashy-ness on almost every important issue.


It shows just how much of a double standard there is for Obama and his family. I have yet to hear on any mainstream media site about her drug issues but earlier this week I was still seeing articles about Obama's "drug use." Obama decided against public financing and now he is taking the heat for it. McCain switches it up on issues that will have an impact for years to come and they are over looked.



I know that this is just the beginning but I cannot wait until this is over. The rules of the game are killing me.

No matter what Obama does someone is going to twist it and scrutinize it harder than they would if it were another candidate. Lucky for us Obama is a master strategist. I am hoping he takes down Old Man McCain the same way he took down the Ice Princess.

I didn't reread my message, so excuse the double negative. But I am a college educated woman and regardless of how well I speak, how well I dressed, professional I am and how well I do my job, I know I am still looked at and treated as the black 'girl.' People open their mouths and say unprofessional things simply because they can.



I feel like a lot of attention gets drawn to the argument of 'they' have Black History Month, BET, and so forth because some groups feel like if we have it they should too. Maybe if we changed the name of some months, tv channels, colleges, and organizations they'd feel better.

FIRST, I'd like to say I'm a 23 y/o black female. Secondly, I stopped watching BET when I was about 17 because it was garbage.. and it's even worse now. I can't even bring myself to watch it on Sunday!


Growing up in suburbia (Connecticut to be exact) and going to a predominantly white high school I learned at an early age that I couldn't get away with a lot of the things white people could. I don't think of myself as a racist but its my reality.



Even now, as I am thrust into Corporate America I notice that things are said to me that are completely inappropriate that I wouldn't be able to say with no repercussion or be able to respond to because my neck will snap to hard, causing me to scare someone and possibly get fired.



The letter that White Woman wrote in isn't nothing I haven't heard before. It doesn't surprise me but I can't help but be disappointed. This country caters to Caucasians, God forbid that another group of people have something that caters to them. Next out of this woman's mouth is that Native Americans shouldn't have reservations.



I am glad that I grew up where I did and know how to deal with the ignorance that I just can't seem to escape.

i did an ultra sound page, cause thats really the only picture that i had of the baby.

i also did a page of me and my husband before the baby

and im actually working on another one for after the baby

I have a Dyson and it is amazing. I have two questions about this vac....
1) How slow do you have to go to kill the DNA with this UV bulb? It would have to be really stong, and won't it hurt my floor?
2) It's only killing what's left behind...why not get a vac that will actually pick it up!

I totally love this movie. I wonder if some of those featured vehicles are being driven by some hollywood superstars?? Fergie, for example, currently owns a hot Hummer H2. Another is Jack Osborne is driving a Wild BMW X-5. What an awesome set of vehicles. I git those news at a certain blog named Celebrity rides. See for yourself who's driving what.
