My initial reaction would be to cash out.

However, with their vc funding it's likely a 1-2x return would not be significant for the investors. As well, if you are enjoying what you are working then the amount of money really doesn't matter. While at FB, Mark could have cashed out for the billions a long time ago but he was always satisfied to continue working/growing the product. To each his own.

OMG Charles! I saw the 8800 a month or so ago and thought it would not come out forever. I bought the Pearl and almost had buyer's remorse today. I finally realized the 8800 was available today and nearly cried in my cubicle. The 8800 is small, sexy, full qwerty and really everything I would want in a phone.

I did realize though the 8800 = corporate which I am not a fan of. It does not have the camera which I like, come in the white color and makes me have to be on Cingular. I felt better after knowing that. Plus you have a Pearl which makes me feel closer to you=)

I think that is the hardest and easiest job to fill.

1- Grab someone WITHIN your community who is doing it for free and pay them

2- I don't think it is something you can learn, hire or foster. It is a natural thing for someone who is passionate and interested in their specific community.

PS. I would love to be the Charles Hudson's blog community manager. Maybe that will get me a link on his Favorite blogs one day=)

this seems like a better direction for ning. provides some focus for their company. more social networks are getting created and vertical niches will succeed. being able to provide/sell the platforms for them will definitely be key.

Thanks for the comment. There are a ton of communities not being acquired by a large company that are thriving today: deviantart.com, threadless.com, dogster.com, suicidegirls.com and tons more. The reason we don't hear about them is we are not involved in them. The main stream ones which make big bucks are what most people hear about.

There are tons of viable business models besides ads:

1- Social Capital/Gifting: Let people through the use of money give to one another virutal goods.

2- Recommended products and services through a community portal.

3- Membership fees to be a part of a community like meetup.com

4- Community donated. This will not bring significant revenue but at least makes the site sustainable like wikipedia.

There are tons more... I think it is just finding out the right balance and value for the members.

I feel face-to-face interaction depends on the organization. Some communities are built from a face-to-face group wanting to have an online presence. Whereas, Daily Strength's success is from the anonymity they provide online.

I don't think niche limits the network effects, I just think it reduces it to a smaller exponential growth and that saturation will happen sooner.

Social Networks are definitely a derivative of forums and just provide an easier way to express yourself and communicate with others beyond just a message board.

I went down to LA recently for 1 meeting with a company to remain anonymous. For the ENTIRE 35 minutes we spoke with them the director played with his cell phone. Super annoying.

Great remarks. I 100% agree that Cupertino has a huge draw because of our remarkable school system. Your second sentence is right on point with my arguments. There is a community that built around an initial base of people who came for the schooling.

I think overall there needs to be an initial reason for the communities to form. For that to happen there needs to be an immediate benefit for themselves.

i wrote awhile ago about craigslist fraud and how it is only going to get larger. these are really edge cases in the TRILLIONS of transactions that occur on craigslist. sucks that they will slightly darken the beauty of craigslist.

When it boils down to it everything is an input and then an ouput. How do you make that experience better for your community?

I know Oliver from vFlyer and it is a pretty useful product.

There seems to be a new trend in widget marketing of just assuming people will willingly post whatever you want on there site.

The best way for me to think about this is like a tattoo. If I asked you to tattoo "I love noah kagan" on your arm, would you? Relating this to widgets you really have to consider the user benefit before assuming people will do what you ask.

I think this is a great service but it is not a real business. Similar to slide, filmloop and other feature companies there is no business model. This could possibly be acquired by a larger photo site but I see the crowd it targetting not sending photos mobily. Most just techies...I think as a project its rather impressive.

Some of our future shows include:
- Cool recipes using the foreman grill
- What really is the best energy drink?
- How to make a simple spaghetti

There are many young people watching the food network that aren't sophisticated enough to follow most of those recipes. We want to do shows that you can do with ease.
