in Skittles.com is the worst thing to ever happen to social media branding on This is going to be BIG!
I agree with @ Eric Brown and just about most of the other commenters here. The Skittles site probably wasn't getting much traffic and with very little money they not only revamped their website but created a free advertising campaign. People are blogging about it, Tweeting about it and it's likely to get picked up by a few main stream pubs and I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the evening news. They created a meme and that's exactly what social media is about - conversation. And, they took big risks by putting this up and allowing both the good comments with the bad. Plus, whether they meant to or not they are now crowdsourcing new business ideas. Are the tour guides at Jelly Belly willing to take that risk? I doubt it!

Interesting, but I'd be curious to know how many coherent--much less useful--"business ideas" came from the twitter exposure, or whether the quality of the chatter even merits the label "crowdsourcing." Overall, the Skittles marketing team's tactics demonstrate some cleverness; but it still smells too much like self-congratulatory social media for social media's sake. (I wonder what the ratio would be of chatter about this episode among us marketers vs any actual *sales lift* for Skittles.) One thing I know for sure: the tour guides at Jelly Belly work hard so that the people who care enough about the brand to come for a visit have a good time there and learn how the candy is actually made. That may not be "clever," but it seems smarter.

Awesome, thanks for sharing the link! I'm always wary to just republish slides when people at conferences make the available :)

in Walmart: It’s Okay to Not be Target on Ignite Social Media
Great post.
What's sad is that they keep making the same mistakes. If they would have just taken the time to understand these new 'channels' they could have owned the conversation.

in White Paper Registration A Big Objection on Writing White Papers
I completely agree with this philosophy. I hope more marketers will see the light and 'loosen the strings.'
