I'm glad you posted this -- I've had the same thing happen to me with one of my suppliers. I bought ONE thing from these people, and I've been bombarded with emails...which I now consider spam, since I didn't ask for the bombardment.

Oh boy. This is a tough one...on so many levels.

Do you know ALL of the circumstances surrounding the crime? Or just that he was convicted and sentenced? I would get that information from the police, and see what THEY say...then, depending on how heinous the information was, I'd simply refuse to spend any time with him.

You're right. It's a terrible crime, and you have every right to be angry, disgusted, and everything else you're feeling. But just make sure you have ALL the facts before taking a firm stand.

And if you really do like the guy...maybe ask him? Take him aside, and say that you found out about X Y and Z, and you'd like to hear his side. How he responds could be his saving grace -- or the thing that makes you grab your wife and run.

Hope this helps at least a little...

Funny -- I woke up this morning thinking about this.

You might want to tell your wife that without having all of the facts, you have to make the firm decision to stay away from this man. The fact that nobody's being open about the "incident", for lack of a better word, makes me wonder if there wasn't a lot more to it than what you've been told thus far.

Unless you're able to make an informed decision...with all the facts...you would do well to stay away from this person, and be a little less welcoming to those who put any importance on shielding his "secret".

I could care less what adults do to each other, but when a crime involves children -- all bets are off.

I have to say (and I'm probably jinxing myself here) that after switching away from WordPress to Serendipity, my comment spam has been reduced to almost zero. I get one or two every now and then, but the comment bombing has stopped. The spam prevention features are better than the ones in WordPress, and there are more features to enable. I didn't think much of Serendipity at first, but the anti-spam features alone have made it worthwhile.

Stacie, I really like it so far. The control panel is similar to WordPress, as are the template features -- so it was easy to make the switch. There seem to be a few limitations, but I haven't fully explored the add-ons and plugins, so it may be a simple fix once I find the plugins I need.

I'd much rather read quality posts, instead of posts that seem like you're trying to get it out to reach that "one post a day" goal. People can tell the difference.

As for links...well, I tend to read blogs where I get to "know" the author, opposed to blogs that simply link to stories in the Washington Post or CNN. I can read the news just as well as the next guy -- I'd like to read your opinion on the news.

I have a blogroll, but they're sites I actually read -- most of them daily. I cull through once a month and delete sites that are gone, or haven't been updated in a while. I try to keep it to a manageable list, and I'm pretty selective as to who gets on the list and who doesn't. The last time I updated the list, I think I removed around 10 or 12 blogs -- simply because the sites weren't working or I grew tired of them and didn't want to read them anymore.

My blogroll is like my magazine rack in the house. I cull through that once a month, too, and the "keepers" are indexed in magazine holders on the bookshelf.

Yes I am a bit anal about my reading material. :-)

It's the writer's equivalent to "I'm taking my toys and going home!"

Being the parent of a five year old, I'm all too well-acquainted with tantrums, but at least from a five year old, it's normal behavior.

I wish Mr. Feldman and his group the best of luck in "finding the truth", but I daresay the "my way or the highway" attitude probably contributed more to the destruction of New Orleans than anything FEMA ever did.

Leroy's 100% correct. Any business you start yourself is like that -- I was up until the wee hours last night baking. Did I look around my kitchen and say "Yipee who needs sleep not me I love to bake ha ha ha"? Hell no. I pissed and moaned about how tired I was and how much I wanted to just crash...

But in reality, I wouldn't want to be stuck in a "job". Opening my own restaurant is important enough that sacrificing "a life" (whatever that is, really...) is what I have to do in order to get things moving.

Nobody said being self-employed was going to be easy, but when the money you earn isn't going to someone else -- then it becomes clear why we're doing this.

In my voting district, the big complaint was regarding the lack of privacy. Apparently voting was done out in the open with people walking by -- which I always assumed to be a big no-no.

As a side note, I'm being spammed by someone from Diebold who wants to bring a video and give a talk to our neighborhood association about their new machines "before the upcoming September election". The election was two weeks ago -- I'd say he needs a new schtick.

I'm voting yes on Question 1. I would love to take that control away from the local government -- they shouldn't be able to sell or otherwise dispose of parkland without there being serious consideration...which I don't trust the Board of Public Works to give.

The thing that Americans tend to conveniently forget is that along with each and every right we're granted -- we're also burdened with a large responibility. We all like to talk about our "rights" but we ignore our responsibilities -- to each other and to our country. Voting is a major responsibility we have as citizens of this country.

There were a bunch of city residents here in Baltimore who didn't receive their absentee ballots...including one of my neighbours. Thankfully she wasn't really absent, and she was still able to vote.

The older I get, the less I *enjoy* voting. But I still do it. I might, however, think twice if we had a lunatic bomber running around. I'm not *that* damn responsible.

I would love to be able to vote for "NONE OF THE ABOVE". That's who I would have voted for in the last presidential election. And if the republicans don't manage to get Bill Frist on the ticket, that's who I'll write in. Maybe George Pataki.

Next presidential election should prove to be interesting...but right now I'm concentrating on getting rid of Sheila Dixon as mayor, even before she sets foot in the mayor's office.

I was never a very political person until now. LOL.

PLEASE move to Pigtown. It's a great neighborhood, and you won't regret it. I've lived here for six years, and we're raising our son here -- he was born the week before we moved here. We have good neighbors, good friends, and with the exception of a few odd incidents, we've been crime free (knock on Ikea wood-veneered MDF).

I wonder if you bought the laptop as a commercial buyer...would they give you the same replacement-guarantee they gave me when I bought the POS system for the coffeehouse. If I ever break one of the pieces, or something goes wrong, they'll bring me a replacement immediately while they fix the broken one. And you get a different tech support number so you don't have to speak to offshore tech support people who can't help. It's worth checking into -- the US-based tech support has been excellent so far.

Here's an irony for you -- a good number of Baltimore City police officers live in Pennsylvania, mostly in York County. They can't stand being in the very city they've sworn to serve and protect, as it's quickly turning into quite the cesspool. They get off work and flee the city for the bucolic "paradise" that is Central PA.

Double irony -- so many of the people priced out of the city (in addition to leaving because they don't like the "new folks") are going to the same place...York County, PA.

So instead of doing all this "shoving to the north" -- why can't someone just step in and fix it all so the good people of Pennsylvania can quit complaining about having "all these people from Baltimore City" clogging up their roads.

Unfortunately, WPNPC doesn't have much to do with crime, crime prevention, or criminal justice. The person you want to point the finger at is Pat Jessamy (or...as MO'M called her..."that bitch") -- it's her job to make sure criminals are actually prosecuted and serve their sentences. A quick perusal of the Baltimore Crime blog paints a sad tale of suspended sentences for pedophiles, rapists, and murderers...so you can imagine the lack of a deterrent for Pigtown's burglar.

However, I did put the word out that I'm in the market to buy some jewelry, and I was pretty specific about the pieces I'm looking for. Hopefully someone will contact me about buying them.

Global makes the best chef's knife and cleaver. The best paring knives/utility knives I own are cheapos I bought at the supermarket. I've had them for years and they've never gone dull. My big serrated knife is by Sabatier.

Oh -- speaking of Wusthof...steer clear of the line they sell at Target. They're nowhere near the real deal, and I think they're a tad overpriced for what they are. You can get better knives for that price.

And you'll want to handwash your good knives...don't put them in the dishwasher unless you have a super-fancy dishwasher...like the one by Miele...that has a separate setting for cutlery. Otherwise they'll develop microscopic dings over time.

Stockpots. I bought both of mine at Wegman's. One is by All-Clad and the other is Wegman's house brand. Both rock, and Wegman's has great deals on All-Clad sometimes. I bought a $220 All-Clad grill pan at Wegman's for $75. Also, Superior Restaurant Supply in Jessup has pots and pans, at good prices - and they sell to the public.

I wish I knew what the heck sector I'm in, because I'd love to get out of it. I guess when you own the business, you're screwed all around. Sometimes it's better to be the employee, 'cause then I'd be $13 richer.

I'm surprised the Verizon employees weren't more helpful. When I broke my old phone (and yes it was totally my fault) they replaced it for me, even though I didn't have the insurance. Of course I have the cheapo Nokia and not a fancy Moto...

Ooo...I get to upgrade this month...what should I get??

I've found that when I'm really "stuck" in a mood or can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, blogging about it and getting the perspective/advice of people who don't know me that well -- it's really helpful. I enjoy reading the opinions of people who aren't just "trying to be nice" and don't know what to say. Strangers are more apt to say "Hey! Quit whining and..." -- it's great. I love it. And god knows, sometimes I need it!

At the risk of sounding a bit out of date, why the insistence on grouping/labelling people? And why do you have to label yourself? Most people, I would imagine, wear many hats these days -- but they don't let those hats identify them. You would be you, no matter what you did for a living and no matter which application you use for networking.

I would solve the problem by recognising that it's not really a problem. Don't overthink.

I see what you mean -- I have "groups" in my email contacts list, and there are a few people who are in all of the groups, so yes -- it would be nice to do the same with social networking apps.
