Seriously. Leaving aside the whole "friends of liberty everywhere but guardians only of our own" thing, which has a pretty distinguished pedigree, where are these Iraqi libertarians?

What we actually seem to be doing, as things go south, is installing an unstable alliance of two collectivisms (Shiite and Kurdish) over a third (Sunni Arab). That's not exactly a Mesopotamian Free State Project.

Re: Getting Serious About Getting Serious

Such discernment, foresight, and moral nobility!

I'll grant you that I rock. Micha Ghertner rocks more, but I'm pretty damn rocking.

You, on the other hand, have conjured the single most bizarre argument for Iraq Wars Phase III and IV that I've heard yet, and I thought I'd heard them all. We're helping "libertarian Iraqis." Yah. My fear is that, maybe we can indeed free the libertarian Iraqis - from their prison in your imagination - but they'll likely balk when we try to send them to Iraq. ("No fair! We liked it better in McLain's head!") Is the ethnic cleansing of someone's daydreams a war crime?

Re: We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Baseball

Since Loverro started with the physical insults ("pencil-neck geeks"), I feel I should mention that he has a high queaky voice that is most unbecoming in a grown man.

Re: Are Libertarians Cheerier?

Will's cheerful? The secondary explanation would be ideological, I'd think. On racial issues, TNR is at the right of the liberal spectrum. Hostile environment! TAP's situation presumably falls primarily on the former prong. Since Harvard does have affirmative action it suggests that AA's ability to usher black students into the sunlit uplands of cronyism is limited, for whatever reason.

I am by no means being merely snarky here. And it occurs to me that the "limits of cronyism" theory may dovetail with the current "over-promotion" meme. To wit: if Harvard admits black students who would do well at UMass but struggle at Harvard, then Marty Peretz's universe comprises a bunch of white students, some of whom are obvious hotshots, and a smaller number of black ones, most of whom are struggling. Ditto for whoever TAP's talent-spotters are at our better institutions.

Re: Rorty Phones It In

You don't mean any of the above in a BAD way, do you?

Re: You Should Buy Explaining Postmodernism

In your case, Will, well, it just feels like communal nepotism.

Isn't that "cronyism?"

Re: Comments Open

I thought you made a good point the other day about the one thing, but in one of the other posts you were wrong about something.
