I agree completely
If something's really valuable, then its managers must be able to justify that value by monitising it. If people really value it, they'll pay for it. Otherwise, it's just doom&gloom claims by an interested party

This is what comes about when Rachel Carson and her 60's hippies mount a savage emotional and irrational attack on science- a scientifically illiterate propulace willing to be take advantage of by quacks.
I'd recommend you all go to Sense about Science and read a little bit- there's a nice PDF report put out by this British Nonprofit with eminent scientific input (not some failed English communications major who can't rub two scientific brain cells together gullibly reporting verbatim some flax wearing hippie marketer's claims)

People, people. There is no such thing as a carcinogen free food. Toxicity (and by extension mutagenic potential ...) is all a matter of dose: even water, in excess is toxic.
And all this stuff about organic being non carcinogenic is a load of manure :-). Take organic potato chips- fry them a little too long (even in organic oil), you've got a acryl amide- which, in excess, is carcenogenic.
The problem is that most people are scientifically illiterate and most journalists are english majors rather than scientists (writing for an even less literate "average" population).
Thus no store can sell carcinogen free food. If they do, they're frauds.

Actually, there is no section 49-O in the constitution (the constitution of India consists of articles and not sections).
There is also no such provision in the constitution under any article. The closest thing is section 49(o) of 'conduct of election rules 1961
" Elector deciding not to vote.-If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark." (see the Wikipedia entry on 49-O)

Not paying your taxes and depositing them into a Counter Terrorism Action fund is still illegal. Taxes are currently not allowed to be contingent on getting what you want. It's not payment for services rendered (though it should be) but a hold up- a demand of "give me your money or else... (go to jail)".
Imagine if all rich libertarians in the US decided that they wanted a flat tax (or better yet, a sales tax!) and refused to fund the US Government until those demands were met, but agreed to deposit their money in a nationalised bank (wait! nowadays, any US bank would meet that criteria) ... They'd end up in jail (or as I'm sure it'll come to be known, The Gulag)
49-O is awesome but as Vidya points out the problem in India is a poorly educated, gullible populace- they'll vote for who ever promises them the most (see the DMK's promises in TN)- and all the "elites" in the world ain't going to fix that! (too small a population base)

Dear Mr. Devy,
Thank you for your gracious and instructive response.
I certainly agree that learning a language often opens a window into the culture, and traditions of a people. I also agree that it is no bad thing to learn another language.
I only reiterate that it is a serious disadvantage- in these times- to lack a fluency in English (the global language of business). I'm heartened to hear of an alumnus of yours who has gone on to do a Masters at Leeds and I hope more students emerge from your academy bi- (or multi-) lingual.
Wishing you all the best in your endeavors

But why is this additional diversity de facto a good thing? Isn't it a marketplace of ideas & values in which these are losing (for whatever reason?).The youngsters in the Adivasi community (and those responsible for their upbringing) have a choice- to follow their culture/values or choose another.
While I'm happy Mr. Devy does want to protect those traditions and that the Ford Foundation is funding him (to each his/her own), Isn't he just preventing the natural evolution (and sometimes extinction) of a community? In the competition for hearts and minds, some ideas (and memes) do better, nein? By ensuring they "remain steeped" in their tradition, isn't there a possibility he's denying them a better life?

Dear Krishna,
Thanks for that comment. Had the competition been 'free', the situation would have been different. First, the land where Adivasis lived for centuries was confiscated by the colonial government and brought under the 'soveriegn domain', declaring the area as 'scheduled' -- which means 'having less legal freedom and secutrity'.
Then, when th elinguistic states were made in India, the speakers of Adivasi languages were denied any statehood, and their languages were denied the status of 'school languages'. This made learning their own mother tongues in a systematic way impossible.
Since, there is very little chance of them speaking their own language and getting into any meaningful occupation, they are under pressure to give up the language(s).
This cannot be called 'natural evolution' of a language. Since there is an external interference causing the decline of the languages, external support too will be required to save the fast disappearing stock of traditional wisdom in those languages.
Of course, at the Adivasi Academy, I have never prevented my collagues and students form learning English or French. One of them recently returned from the University of leeds after completing a Masters. But, I encourge them to use their own languages as well.
I hope you will appreciate my point of view.

in Congratulations President Obama on Almost As Good As Chocolate
Just as the overthrow of H.W. Bush's Presidency by Clinton signaled America's rejection of the last of its honourable veterans of WW II (in favour of a Pot smoking draft dodger), this election has seen the casting aside of the last of the heroes of the Vietnam War by a questionably financed and befriended, inexperienced candidate running on similar platitudes (Hope, Change)
Oh well, at least McCain offered to help the newbie out (better than Clinton's offer to him after the Primary). Sen McCain, your country and the world owes you a great debt. No one captured and tortured by a peoples has done more to mend fences between them. We will miss you sir!
One can only hope that he actually does better than his predecessor and his inexperience doesn't result in similar results for the world (remember Rwanda)! Not "Hope", Pray!!!

What about another honorable veteran - Kerry? He lost to the biggest idiot and the worst president ever. That was sad.
Let's judge people after giving them a chance. The expectations are high. If he can deliver against a majority of his promises, our country will be in a much better place.

in Sarah Palin Punk’d by Montreal radio station on Almost As Good As Chocolate
Hardly a new phenomenon.
"French President Jacques Chirac took a call from Canada's newly elected leader only to find he had been fooled by a pair of radio pranksters known as the "Masked Avengers" in Montreal...after swapping diplomatic niceties during a lengthy chat, Marc-Antoine Audette of CKOI radio -- Canada's most popular station with over a million listeners -- let the 73-year-old Chirac in on the joke."
This prank is reminiscent of the 2003 phone call Miami morning team Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero. The DJs, from spanish-formatted WXDJ-FM, placed a phone call to the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. The F.C.C. fined them later."
http://radio.about.com/b/2006/01/29/canadian-ra...
Of course some liberals will make a big deal about it- if nothing else to mask the illegal donations Obama received from his illegal "Auntie" immigrant relative (Wow shades of Gore and the Chinese funds from the Buddhist temple). Wonder if the Democrats have a systematized illegal funding mechanism? FEC, FEC...?
As for Palin (who, for other reasons, I think is an idiot), if the French President called you and made a mistake, would you be rude and point it out or let it pass? This particular call proves nothing.

in Powell Endorses Obama on Almost As Good As Chocolate
After all, as a judge of character, this is the man who said "Dick Cheney would make an Excellent Vice President". I'm sure he's similarly correct about Obama.
This in the same week where he got on stage and sang a song (potentially glorifying) money laundering in Nigeria
Also, when you see his economic justification on how Obama understands the economy, you see that Mr. Powell is actually a big bit leftie. When he talks about "redistributing wealth",shouldn't he really be a Democrat. They're the ones who believe it's okay to rob (oh wait! they call it TAX) from those who worked for it to give to those who didn't.
Tell me, how is raising corporate taxes and cutting income taxes really a tax cut or in any way fiscal stimulus. Maybe Mr. Powell should have stuck to making false statements to the UN about WMDs in Iraq (if he says it, doesn't he bear responsibility for checking his data?)
Oh well, when you guys have the USSR (United State Socialist Republic), with Democrats in charge of the Presidence, Congress, and a filibuster proof Senate, maybe you'll really see corporate flight

in New York is not an alley on Almost As Good As Chocolate
It is a wonderful image.
But maybe it should say NYC is a giant black hole for the average American taxpayer.
With LTCM (ok Connecticut, but really NY), Bear Stearns, AIG, etc., etc. etc. (never mind the 1930s), you have to wonder how much money is being extracted from the rest of the country to protect that city's jobs.
And those "foot soldiers" 'suffering' aren't "innocent"- the NYC deal-makers were paid (very large) bonuses on closing the deal (rather than on the outcome). And no one's clawing that back!
In fact the Governors, and Senators of NY (Democrats all) seem to climbing over each other to support further bail outs. Of course the incumbent Republicans seem to be, if anything, worse: suggesting massive bail-outs of industry (where have all the free-marketers gone?)

The world between Democrat and Republican is too divided as is- we all gain from interplay and debate (rather than the stratified silos of people agreeing with others just like them)- oh, and I'm not a Republican. I think Palin is a Moron (see her views on creationism, her massive spending, questionable ethics, etc...)and a bad choice.
I just happen to believe Obama is also a bad choice (whatever you say, the Presidency isn't the place to battle test a neophyte). Would you like someone just out of a MBA (or a local 7-11 manager) running IBM?

That way you're not tied to a monopolistic entity that can disable or screw-up your phone at will. You don't have to approach every "upgrade" or "bug fix" (let's face it that's what most of these upgrades are- security fixes) with trepidation?

Then you need to talk to US demographers. They split the nation into various groups based on different (at least perceived) needs, interests, and intents.
If Blacks are a voting group, as are "hispanics" (a completely group created by Nixon!), then the elderly are certainly one too. And McCain would be the first elderly candidate in the last few decades.
In a time of global uncertainty and conflict, having been a war hero, McCain's probably better informed and able to make decisions than a ex-cocaine smoking regional politician and a carpet-bagging resume inflator. Change must be for a reason and with purpose not change for change's sake - which seems to be the essential Democratic arguement since their last drug smoking genocide-allowing waffler (I guess no troops in Rwanda too- wonder why no democrats have asked that question!)

Conservative?
Obama is black. McCain is old. Neither have political pedigree (unlike Indira Gandhi in India). And there are plenty of women more likable and qualified than that carpet-bagger now from NY- maybe Obama will choose one of the eminently qualified democratic women Governors. Or maybe McCain will choose 'Bobby' Jindal- also non-white.
For the first time in a long time, the US has a choice between non-typical candidates. Maybe it's time to recognize and celebrate that

I love the fact that they're screening these world class productions. But, much like digital music, or computer software, the marginal cost of screening should merely be the depreciation on the cameras (if they were not already being recorded for sale on DVD) and the cost of renting the theaters.
Unless they believe that this is cannibalizing their live performance (and your #s show they're not), why are they charging $22/ ticket? Even a movie costs only $11. I wounder if they've done real price elasticity research

I agree on the public service commitment of corporations (especially since they were given their air bandwidth FREE!!- one of the biggest Govt. handouts in History!) but my point is that there are good news alternatives (BBC on cable, NPR on free air)but too few take advantage of them
There is of course, the chicken-egg problem: "Has bad news dumbed the population down so much that they prefer bad news?" I could go on, but I'll stop for fear of being labeled an elitist

The issue of "the media is soooo pathetic" rears its ugly head every few years. Everyone bitches and moans and suggests no alternatives!
If you thought a car was ugly, would you buy it? Then why do you watch a stupid reality show that you think is bad? Or watch the 9 PM news if you think it's rubbish? Don't tell me you can't find something better, more entertaining, or more informative!
These are corporations- they respond to your watching & your dollars (thanks to ratings, these are the same things). If people watch crap, corporations will give you crap. People get what they pay for!
If you believe, like me, that the news is a "special" category, and that The Economist Magazine will never be mainstream because "people" are just too stupid, then you need something like the BBC (non-commercial)... wait you have PBS, and NPR! And not enough people watch/listen to it!
Want better news? Stop blaming the companies and start looking to your own behaviour! Turn off that TV, buy/rent a DVD, read your news on the web, get a subscription to The Economist Magazine and don't pick up that newsstand edition of whatever celeb mag you buy.
