The biggest advantage I see in Nokia's solution: It works with SSL for GMail.

in Mobile VoIP and White Label, the Next Big Thing on LucaFiligheddu.com
Fring already does it. They partner with 500 companies, many of them give their customers a Fring software preconfigured with their access data to download. I would call that whitelabel, since the customer's relationship is with the VoIP company not with Fring. A Fring business developer explained me this model last week in an interview.

in Google, Web 2.0 and the Lack of Innovation on LucaFiligheddu.com
The worst thing is that I can't use GMail for Symbian S60 since I changed to "always use SSL" at GMail. But there is help: The new Nokia Email service works great with GMail and SSL. It's now my prefered software since GMail for Symbian S60 became unusable.

It's time for Truphone to finally come out of the closet. Yet one year ago they presented their iPhone prototype.

in How to run Android on your Nokia N810 easy on Unwired View
I flashed my N810 to Diablo to make a clean start.

Then I downloaded "android.img.bz2" and "android-installer.deb" to my clean device. When I try to install "android-installer.deb" it just says "Unable to install android-installer".

What am I doing wrong?

in Switched back to a Nokia E61 on LucaFiligheddu.com
I also love the E61 and use it everyday for nearly everything. I love to write emails on it since they keyboard is great and the mobile use (which I advert in the signature) allows me to keep the messages short. The Google feedreader is great on it and allows me to browse hundreds of news in an hour. Of course only in Wifi areas since I am a penny pincher.

I also predicted this move in an article for IP Convergence TV, but 3 months before you. :)

in Truphone acquires Sim4Travel and takes directly on MaxRoam on LucaFiligheddu.com
Is this really such a big news?

Truphone's technological sibling Wifimobile did the same already in January (http://www.webitpr.com/release_detail.asp?Relea...) and nobody seemed to care. The two companies are involved in a funny race for the latest features and ideas.

A 3rd competitor, Vyke, does the same kind of VoIP on Nokia phones and also bought a big company with his stock money.

in Are Web 2.0 Services Capital Intensive? on LucaFiligheddu.com
Maybe you should pass more time in Silicon Valley or move the entire company there. That's where the networks are. Unfortunately we Europeans are not so much in the VC's focus.

The hottest startup is now Qik, ran by an Indian in Silicon Valley. The development is being done in Russia, as Bhaskar Roy told me at the Mobile World Congress. The VCs are competing to do their second round of funding.

One even called me to tell it to Bhaskar in Barcelona.

in VoIP services compared: Jajah Direct, Mobivox, RebTel, Talkster, WifiMobile on LucaFiligheddu.com
Great review! Thanks a lot. VoIP blogging is sometimes so fast that it just copies press releases and people forget to also check out if the services really work.

You are so right! It's astonishing.

Just minutes ago I wrote a blog post called "Worldwide free calls through a security breach". If there were people on the moon, we could probably call them for free with this solution. If only it wasn't illegal. ;)

in New year, clean theme on LucaFiligheddu.com
Is this a theme? It's just black on white!

My own website looks like this before the CSS is loaded. Quite frugal. I think some more colors to separate the different spaces of your site are allowed.

Techcrunch's style is also quite frugal, but at least the separate the page's head with colors from the body. I like that.

in A problem of expectations on LucaFiligheddu.com
Isn't the 3Skypephone using the iSkoot software? At least iSkoot's website says so.

http://www.iskoot.com/pressreleases/prnetwork_1...

„CAMBRIDGE, MA – October 30, 2007 – iSkoot today announced that it has been selected by Skype to help power the 3 Skypephone – the first ever mass-market Skype-enabled mobile handset. ...“

This means that Skype calls from the 3Skypephone aren't 3G VoIP calls. They are GSM calls from the phone to the 3-iSkoot server, which then cannels them over the internet to Skype. The data connection is only used to show the presence of the Skype buddies.

So the bad voice quality is not because of unreliable 3G coverage but because of the low sound quality of the GSM codecs. But still it`s a nifty solution to guarantee Skype coverage everywhere.

That's also why their FAQ list (http://www.3skypephone.com/english/faq.html) says:

Q: Will it work on 2G, 2.5G& 3G networks?
A: Wherever you have coverage in the UK, Skype will work. If you can make a normal voice call, you will be able to make a Skype Call.

in SIP to Skype Calls from Fring on LucaFiligheddu.com
Did they really call SIP to Skype?

I don't really know. He only said "we call the X-Lite now", but then we heard a Skype ring. Why didn't he say "we at Fring built a bridge from SIP to Skype"? I mean, that would be a real news.

I saw the video two times and now I am a little bit confused. Calling Skype from SIP would be a great feature. Even better would be to get Skype calls on my SIP ATA.

in Jajah, YES headset on LucaFiligheddu.com
In fact I also appreciate Jajah's move since I always prefer pure play VoIP over callback solutions. Japan's reality is our future and in few years we will see VoIP over mobile data connections everywhere.

The latest strategic report from Informa Telecoms & Media called “Future Mobile Broadband: Revenue Opportunities for HSPA to LTE, EV-DO to UMB & WiMAX” suggests that mobile broadband is set to explode. According to Informa’s researchers, mobile broadband will represent close to half of total mobile service revenues in 2012. Revenues from mobile broadband services will generate more than $400 billion globally by 2012.

Or to put in other words, sooner or later carriers WILL become dumb pipes - for VoIP and other applications. Truphone is already counting on that with their latest 3G optimized client. VoIP over HSDPA sounds great, and for laptop use we even get flatrates in Germany. Jajah knows that and prepares in Japan.
