TMD in conjunction with Harris and FitzP are allowing this (won't say the word) to do what she and what their string pullers in So Roa and SW city want. IF the voters would have gone with any combination of Revercomb, McConnel, Bowers, White or Macfarlane, sweet big Darlene would be in the unemployment lines now. You may have another opportunity to change the future of the city come the spring council elections. ANYONE supported by the current council majority will be BAD BAD BAD for the city. Look to someone else. And now that Harris and the Harrisites also control the city Democratic committee, voters need to be smarter that just voting for a "D". Fact is that Lea himself only has a slim shot at running as a D, unless he buckles under to the Harris whip...I would never have thought he would, but don't know any more. Get off your butt Roanoke. Get out and get involved and send Darlene back to Tidewater and get a council majority in place that will respond to the CITIZENS, not to the influence and desires of those few people in So Roa and a couple other places. And you business owners better put the clamps down on that Chamber "PAC". Funny how business owners belong to the Chamber, but just like the voters, they let the Board do what they please with their money. The other options, of course, include getting out of the city. Actually, that may be the smarter move.

Re: City Manager doesn’t want crimes or fires given a quadrant designation

I think there is a lot of truth in that but there is also a lot of crime in other locations as well. In addition to you views, I think they are trying to minimize the reality of crime in Roanoke overall, making them (Darlene and the Harrisites, look like they are doing a great job. If the good citizens of Roanoke don't get off their rears, it's only going to continue AND get worse. Bless our dedicated firemen and policemen. And merry Christmas to you and yours!

Re: To Spend or not to spend

What's going on in Roanoke? Funny anyone should ask this AGAIN. Seems I have seen this question several times recently. But do you recall the Tribune putting it in print back prior to the last Council elections? I do. And I helped stuff hundreds of copies of that paper in door throughout Roanoke City. But what did the good citizens of Roanoke do but go on and elect Alfred anyhow. All I can say is that you got the brainless one along with another pair of goof balls making a goof ballish majority and a run away redhead still running the city. You got a small opportunity to make a little change this election.
First, while no one is currently running against Harris, it is not necessary to vote for him. Select your candidates for council, just don't vote for mayor. Oh sure, he'll still win but what a statement it would make to see 20,000 voters cast ballots for council and maybe only 2 or 3 thousand for mayor. Harris should be able to see the message in that.

Secondly however consider your votes for Council carefully. To date there is one serious candidate running (Valerie Garner) and that wild guy Lockhard. Forget him, VOTE FOR VALERIE.

Re: To Spend or not to spend

Yes, it is crazy and I have begun to wonder about the citizens of Roanoke for not being more active and aware of "What's Going On".
Roanoke city is being run by So Roa and a couple from Salem and Botetourt as well. "Public interest" is defined by those people and City Council policy is similarily established by them. The current theme is to attract "young professionals" so that's where the money is going to be directed. The city manager is also a very big part of the problem. Fire and police are being put way down the list...have been and will continue to be, along with the rest of the city employees. Do you go to City Council? It won't do much good initially, but there is no better and cheaper way to get your message out and EVENTUALLY, if you stick with it, it CAN have an impact. Don't take this personally, but I tend to suspect the firemen are too deeply embedded in their situation. It's understandable but you need to look around and see the big picture. Citizens all across Roanoke are getting the screws. Downtown merchants, Williamsom Road, SE, NW residents, police...and yet with all the abuses, nothing seems to be able to bring these various groups together to address the problem. You can spend money on "public informational messages" but it's not going to be effective. And you can talk of unions but thanks to the good Commonwealth's laws, you'll fail there as well. GET EVERY OFF DUTY FIREMAM AT CITY COUNCIL NEXT MEETING AND MAKE A STATEMENT. And have everyone bring just one "citizen supporter" AND don't just sit there and have one or two people speak, every one of you should sign up to speak. You only get three minutes so be very specific and speak from the heart. Be aware that "selfish interests" tend to tarnish your objectives and thus the need to look beyond just the fire house. Good fortune to all and thanks for what you do.

Re: To Spend or not to spend

I do understand the concern over the consequences of speaking out but I have seen some very heated comments directed specifically at council members and very honestly nothing bad has happened to the speaker...unless you threaten to shoot them as did Mr. Gravley! Or if you speak up out of turn and disrupt the meeting, as also happened. Speakers should have their facts together and make their points respectfully but firmly and avoid threats. Believe me the biggest statement is one that is never spoken IF they can do it...get 100 or 200 people there all to make simply direct statements. The point being that the NUMBER of speakers sends the message far better than what anyone has to say. If they cannot do that, then it is simply best to tuck the old tail and take whatever come down the pike. Another point about it. The time is right now to do it. Dowe's an embarrassment to Harris and company. As I understand it, Harris is calling for an audit of expenses and there could be more abuses uncovered. Public sentiment fades quickly but right now you can get a lot of mileage out of the situation to underscore your points. The results of the audit may provide more fuel OR it may show this is the worst of it...and the public will quickly loose interest. You also need to get to the current slate of Council candidates for their commentary. You guys and gals have an opportunity NOW to make you case...Dowe's issues, and the elections as well. Sit around and talk about it won't do any good. As they say...time to walk the walk!

Re: And the beating continues

I have no idea about this issue from a legal point of view but it does puzzle me that a group would be unwilling to speak out in their own behalf, such as at City Council, out of fear of the consequences and YET willing to take on the city in a legal battle. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that picture? My view is that only the lawyers tend to win in these situations. I was part of a suit agains the city. $72,000 and a year later and "we" got no where. (BTW, the Peakwood Drive suit was said to have had a tab of over $250,000 and those people LOST.) No one will do it for free and it's not likley the kind of action which would be taken on a contingency basis. And don't forget the buddy buddy legal system including the judges, meaning you would likely have to go out of the area to find someone willing to hammer on them without fearing the consequences of his associates and setting judges. Was it better last year? How about 2 or three yers ago?? Maybe 5 years ago? So what will it be like in 2 or three more. I'll offer a guess if YOU people don't act. Your responsibility for public safety clearly does not just start when the bell rings. Who will be responsible when you are not able to answer the call? City manager? City Council? Sure! But where exactly are you in the mix of responsible parties?

Re: And the beating continues

A spirited comment for sure! But just wondering. When you say "let's get this crap fixed" a few questions come to mind.

First. Who is the "us" that will fix it?

Second. What specifically will "they" do to fix it?

Third. When will it be done?

The Dowe situation has gotten worse for him (better for you). I'd say his lifestyle, which, *on the balance*, is "green" is proportional to his income (and there's nothing wrong with using green energy btw). If everyone lived proportional to their income (which they do not), they could afford carbon credits purchases too. If they wanted to.

I think that if he did live in a smaller house, car etc. it would invite criticism that he's "anti-progress" or "anti-technology", or anti-free-market" or "anti-American" etc. I've noticed that people who like to discredit the environmental movement, do so with broad brush strokes and paint and vilify anyone who dares try a different tactic as some kind of crazed lunatic. I'd say he's doing the best he can, making the most impact he can given his position. That's not to say that everyone should live like that, but someone has to be able to reach people and get the word out. And that takes money, like it or not.

Detractors of the environmental movement like to discredit anyone that makes an effort if they're not perfect. And of course perfection is impossible. People will always have an effect on the environment just by existing. Using that argument, unless you are willing to "un-exist" yourself, then you are a hypocrite too.

The goal is to minimize our impact and get others to do their best towards reaching that same goal. Towards that end, I'd say he's doing much much more than most.

Re: Al Gore Announces New Book, "Picking up where An Inconvenient Truth left off"

"I think you're missing the point of Al Gore's detractors. It isn't that he isn't perfect, it's that he's pretty bad and did relatively nothing in his own state."

Interesting point. But was he prevented from making changes that he wanted to make, or did he actively go out of his way impede positive change? There are a lot of forces (often involving big money) that try to prevent environmentally friendly decisions from being made, because they often cause someone who has money, to lose money.

Just a small example, but in the city where I live, something that sounds as simple as adding bike likes to a few roads was a *hugely* contentious issue. You'd think it would be a no-brainer, but it was actually very difficult to get the bike lanes. Many many drivers did not want to be "inconvenienced" by having to give up one lane for bikes. Those drivers put real political pressure on the local politicians, and it took a great deal of effort to do something as small as putting in a bike lane.

I can imagine that the complexities of making environmentally sound decisions at the state level are an order magnitude more difficult. Often environmentally sound policies produce long term gain, but incur short-term costs that voting people resist (and often that resistance is fueled by political foes or large institutions with a different political agenda). Most people look for short term gain. Getting people to see the long-view requires substantial effort.

I'm not sure one person can necessarily make sweeping changes of this nature given all the various political forces at work, and that's why I think his detractors are not being fair. It's as if they expected this *one* guy to come in, and on his own completely shake the place up. Where were the people (i.e. detractors) voicing their discontent with the status quo? Sure, there were some, but not enough apparently. In my experience, the grassroots level advocacy creates the initial momentum for societal change that *then* opens the door for politicians to act.

Sometimes it's easier to effect change from outside government.

Re: Taxidermy Lightens Up

Living creatures in any form deserve respect. This enforces the notion that animals are objects to be used for our indulgences, not living creatures with a necessary place in the interconnected web of life. Objectifying animals this way reduces the respect for nature and the environment. It subconsciously tells people that life is a commodity with a dollar value. And thus, it does harm to the environment. People will not protect what they don't respect.

Re: Extreme Makeover: The Tea Bag

my favorite tea infuser - works like a charm and does not leak tea bits, easy to clean

http://www.coffeegizmo.com/

Re: Finally Something To Do With All That Styrofoam?

I recently read about "international foam solutions" which essentailly crushes styrofoam and turns it into a gel for transport and recycling. He used a bus and purchased offsetting carbon credits to compensate for the travel. You ask, "couldn't he have done the same over the internet"? Possibly, but would it have been as effective? It appears to be your preferred method. Unfortunately, I've never seen or heard of you or your environmental message. You say no one listened? And so your environmental message did not inspire tens of thousands of people like Suzuki's does? Maybe sometimes just sitting in one's basement on an internet soapbox doesn't speak very loudly to enough people. Sometimes you have to get out and do something to inspire people, which David Suzuki has been doing to decades. I'd say that qualifies as a leader.

As for your environmental activism concerning ethanol, it was obviously well intentioned. However, doesn't using ethanol as a fuel result in a net loss in energy? (i.e. requires more total energy to produce it than it delivers). Maybe there was a reason he didn't listen?

You also say you have figured out more answers but since no on is listening (as you say) you will just sit back and watch. People are listening. It takes time. Do you think Suzuki has never had his ideas rejected or ignored? A real leader stays in the battle and trudges on. Seeing as he's been at this for decades...

In my opinion, your broad negative criticism of Suzuki's work and those that are inspired by it (myself included) is doing a disservice to what we all are trying to accomplish; making the world a better place to live.

Re: Getting Rid of the Fridge- Big Step or Small?

Willy Bio:

Thanks for that link. That's a very interesting article! Cheers!

Andrew said:

"Why has no one thought about pumping cold air from outside into your fridge in the winter? In cold climates, this would save a lot of energy."

I know I've thought about that too! And about the absurdity of heating up a big box (the room), and cooling down a smaller box (the refrigerator) within the big box!

I did look into it a while back; I found a few companies that sell some kind of air transfer system like that, but if I recall correctly, it was rather involved, due to having to stop condensation from forming within the duct work, etc.It wasn't "plug and play" (at the time) from what I saw.

Now, if say, most of the refrigerator extended outside of the house (into the cold), like an exterior "closet", then you wouldn't need to pump any air at all. Just open a door into an (uninsulated) cold room so to speak. I've considered setting up something like that, but doubted whether it would be consistently cold enough to work without some kind of crazy cooling-assist contraption for warmer days.

I like the idea in the article that Willy Bio linked to though! Sounds much easier to set up. If you put in your email we might discuss this.

Re: Environment Movement Should Change Their Message, Says Author Chris Turner

I think this is a good idea. While all the reporting on all the environmental problems is necessary and important, I find all the "doom and gloom" stories don't actually inspire me to do anything. Sure, they make me more aware of the problem; which is important of course, but what directly changes in my behaviour as a result of hearing it? Probably very little. I have found that what actually motivates me to make changes are positive examples of what we can do.

Sometimes the doom and gloom stuff is too overwhelming and makes you want to give up. Whereas the smaller steps often proposed by positive example actually get people to make changes. As an example, I heard about David Suzuki's Nature Challenge and actually did it. It was a great starting point, and has led me to be even more environmentally responsible.

Re: Red Cross To Georgia: 'Be Ready For Drought Emergency With 5 Cases Of Bottled Water Per Person'

Maybe the Coca-cola's and the Pepsi's (etc.) should be paying for the water that they take from the people for free and sell back to them at enormous profit's. All the while contributing to local water shortages.

The obscene thing is that this scenario (i.e. recommending buying bottled water to conserve local water) will be accepted by most people as a reasonable solution. Most won't see the larger looming water privatization issue.

Unfortunately, this exact same issue is already happening in "third world" countries, where you have a bottling company bottling up the local water (it's okay, we're creating jobs!) and selling it to other countries in the form of Coke, Pespi etc. thus lowering the local water table to the extent that people who rely on wells for their water, can no longer dig deep enough to get to the water. But that's democracy in action right? Scary.

Re: Driver of Flintstonemobile Charged, Gets Day in Court

I've been meaning to say this for a while now. It's all about the design and the way the car is designed to crush in an impact.

Re: Socket Sense: Yet Another Solution To A Stupid Problem

I think one reason a lot of companies make products that use an adapter rather than a regular power cord is that it is easier to get a product CSA or UL certified (for safety) if it uses an adapter rather than an internal power supply.

Until those low voltage dc outlets become standard in the house, I don't see this problem going away any time soon.

Adapters sure are annoying though!

Re: Greenwash Watch: More Fibs From the LCBO

I wouldn't be so quick to disparage the LCBO for being publicly owned. Publicly owned companies are a good thing. Privately owned companies close shop and move when times get tough.

For those that would say that free market forces should be allowed to rule here, I would find that totally ironic coming from people who (in general) promote fair trade, which is the antithesis of free market, is it not?

Re: The Worst Effect of Global Warming So Far...

If someone can tell me how to homebrew a Guinness, I'd looooove to know! But it is not any worse than how cattle and chickens are treated. Do these same people protest the slaughter of cattle and chicken (much larger industries)? In fact they should, but for the purposes of creating better conditions for the animals. Just check out factoryfarming.com and then decided whether the seal hunt is any worse than any other of these.

Re: Wife Insures Herself Against Becoming Ugly

Too late

Re: http://anhkhoi.blogspot.com/2008/01/durban-conference-is-waste-of-time.html

I do not know much about the racial issues that are occurring in Eastern countries but I would like to give my opinion on something a little off topic:

I can't really give a good example, but it seems that we are overly sensitive on the racial issue these days. Not that I'm racist or anything, but do you get the feeling that even the most unoffensive topics about races could turn controversial these days, anyone agrees?

Will one day occur where people are just too afraid to talk about anything race related because they might unwillingly speak about something that will offend someone. Clearly, a better boundary should be set on what should be appropriate and what is inappropriate, but even the best defined boundaries cannot please everyone.

Re: http://anhkhoi.blogspot.com/2006/10/stand-up-for-freedom-of-speech.html

In my opinion, I don't think there is "freedom" in any society. If you decide to live in a society, you have to sacrifice your freedom and abide to the laws and values that society gives you. The difference is that some countries are more "free" than others, but it's impossible to have the "perfect freedom".

Re: Davos - Day 5 - 19th February 2009

im not doing any black run matey - but a wipeout i can quite easily manage

Re: Davos - Day 3 - 17th February 2009

Davos rocks, it's probaby one of the nicest places I've been to.

We've already done the don't eat yellow snow line....

Anyhoo - its breakfast time and Sam is still addicted to twitter

Re: http://www.crimene.ws/2007/11/joran-van-der-sloot.html

I noticed JL claims he's a "kid".
Well kids are pre-teens. Just because Duckworth said she didn't care about the sexual orientation of people serving under her in Iraq doesn't mean she supports overriding the military commanders and having Congress repeal "don't ask, don't tell." You can't extrapolate her position on a major change in military policy based on those personal sentiments, and that's what this interest group did when they sent out their press release.

Re: Afternoon video

The true heros of Illinois, thank you Rich!

Re: No demands from LMadigan?

I am in support of SB600. Its important legislation needed to wake up a lackadaisical republican party. I have been battling third party rumblings with more conservative groups than I could ever mention. In all honesty why should these folks support a party that has little if any regard for the rank and file. Passage of SB600 will go a long way to restore that confidence if not too late. Although if you want to deny these people their voice expect them to go to fringe parties which will ring the death bell for the republican party in Illinois.

Re: The world won’t end

Know who caused majiuana prohibition, James Hearst, the original citizen cain. He owned almost ever newspaper around the turn of the century. Most of his interests was timber. A major investor to a man named Dow. Dow who at the time had a new invention, nylon. His actual enemy was hemp, which is the male of the plant, primarily used for rope, was a cash crop to most farmers. Hemp was hard to process. Hearst, made every crime about "Marijiuana" A word he created. There is no such plant. It's name is Cannabis. Hearst made such hate, that the goverment got involved, and made it so only farmers who bought the goverment Hemp stamp, which was never printed, could grow hemp. Conviently just as the first Hemp Gin was invented. Dow made nylon, the primary rope, in the country and Hearst made Millions.
Many still enjoy today, Cannabis Sativa or Marijuana's cousin, Cannabis Hops, the main ingredient in beer.

Re: http://www.virtualization.info/2007/08/vmware-esx-server-31-virtualcenter-21.html

Awesome. Griffiths ground breaking epic, but the second part of it , even ignoring the racial overtones, is really pretty dull. I have seen it only one time.
Gone with the Wind is not really a very good film, well made, and looks great, the second half and Vivien Leigh as Scarlett is a better story, Leigh was one of those great British actors, Clark Gable on the other hand was a wooden Indian of an actor until the last few movies of his life. He was ok in comedies at that time. I have watched GwtW maybe four times and get more bored with it each time.
Lawrence of Arabia I have watched several times , watched it again about a month ago it has lost some of its luster for me some parts of it don't work as well as when I first saw it in 62.
2001 and The Seven Samurai I have probably watched so many times I can't count them.
Dr. Strangelove and Paths of Glory ought to be on that list.
I have watched Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon more than Seven Samurai! It is almost a perfect film, also on that list ought to be Kurosawa's Ikiru and about a dozen later films he made.
Satyajit Ray's films are sublime and hardly ever mentioned, the World of Apu trilogy makes Slumdog Millionaire look like third rate film making, Pather Panchali is another almost perfect film.
A whole lot of really fine and wonderful foreign films left off that list!
Any really film buff would know them.

Re: http://thesmoakhouse.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-does-matthew-24-olivet-discourse.html

Very interesting!
I have alot to learn.

Re: http://thesmoakhouse.blogspot.com/2007/10/paul-epistles-to-thessalonians-follow.html

I do agree that the word rapture does not exist in the bible. The stats show that Joba is not good right now but can we afford to not pitch him and pitch Damaso Marte instead? Obviously my argument is that we should be sticking with Joba here like we stick with CC (for the record I have a bet with my brother dating back to the day we signed CC that if CC pitches well in the playoffs he can punch me in the stomach and if he doesn't I can punch him in the stomach... I do admit to having a bias for Joba and that of late he's been "not good"... but Phil Coke and Damaso Marte are not exactly "lights out" pitchers either. Moreover, they do the same thing!

I don't know how else to say this... I just feel more comfortable with Joba Chamberlain in a big spot than I do the end of our bullpen. Not to mention a 3rd catcher. You can throw all the stats you want at me... I have never felt good about giving the ball to Damaso Marte and/or Phil Coke in a big spot... maybe the stats say something different.

Actually, this could be a stretch but what the hey, the stats say Sabathia should not be our #1 starter because he's so horrific in the postseasons past... would any of you not start him? Of course he gets the ball in game 1 because he's the best pitcher on the staff... so we're trusting his talent over what the stats say.

Re: http://www.yankeeist.com/2009/10/game-159-recap-yankees-lose-to.html

im too tied up to get into stats right now and id basically just be repeating my argument that Joba is the better pitcher and we should be careful not to over-analyze the situation... Ortiz was just an example...

what I'm saying is in a big spot I want my best guy out there and Phil Coke Damaso Marte, et. al are not better pitchers than Joba Chamberlain

There is such a thing as over-managing and this would an example of it... pick one lefty specialist, two catchers and leave Joba in the bullpen to pitch the 7th inning

Re: http://www.yankeeist.com/2009/10/game-159-recap-yankees-lose-to.html

I just can't accept that answer that Joba has been inconsistent... because all of those guys that we've mentioned have been inconsistent as well. Also, we won 100 games but that doesn't mean we're by far the best team we can be. Always look to get better. Let me put it to you this way... bases loaded 2 outs in the bottom of the sixth inning with David Ortiz up. Do you want to lose the game with Phil Coke in there or do you want to lose the game with Joba Chamberlain in there? In all situations I differ to my horse... to the better guy. Joba Chamberlain is a better pitcher than all of those guys and all of them are inconsistent. So all things being equal wouldn't you take the guy who has the potential to pitch the best?

Re: http://www.yankeeist.com/2009/10/game-159-recap-yankees-lose-to.html

Can't deny that Joba just hasn't been himself of late... I would still take an inconsistent Joba Chamberlain out of the bullpen as opposed to an inconsistent Coke, Marte, Mitre and Bruney for that matter. The 3rd catcher stuff is ridiculous and should be thrown out the door. In 162 games the Yankees haven't needed a 3rd catcher so it's hard to believe they'd sap a playoff spot by using someone who most likely will never touch the field

Re: http://www.yankeeist.com/2009/10/game-159-recap-yankees-lose-to.html

i honestly feel like im taking crazy pills right now... forget about the 3rd catcher for a second. Does anyone here think that Damaso Marte has a better chance of getting people out than Joba Chamberlain... lefty or righty? What has Marte proved to us? Phil Coke? I mean he's anything but a sure thing. Putting Gaudin in is okay with me because i think he's shown he's got something but what has Mitre done this year to show that he's anything better than what Joba would give?

Remember Joba is fucking electric and he's pitched in the post-season before as a reliever. I have no stats or anything to back me up... just my instincts that Joba is a better pitcher than Coke, Marte, and Mitre. Lefties or righties, it doesn't matter with Joba. The only reason that I could see Joba going to the bench is if the Yankees know something we do about an injury.

Re: http://www.yankeeist.com/2009/10/game-159-recap-yankees-lose-to.html

I think this is just gamesmanship and a poor attempt at that. The 25 best players should be on the roster and there is no way you could say that Phil Coke and/or Damaso Marte has earned a spot over Joba Chamberlain. It's ludicrous for us to even entertain this idea.

Re: Bree Olsen

What a babe......

Re: http://www.thenewblackwoman.com/2009/08/liberal-lion-of-senate-roars-his-last.html

Thanks to ted kennedy people in boston do not have a second amendment, they have some of the worst gun laws in the country, right to carry should be in every state it is currently in forty states.

Re: http://www.thenewblackwoman.com/2009/08/rep-frank-takes-stand.html

When my son was born he needed an important surgery, if i had been under the obama health care system would the politicians be deciding whether or not my son gets help or if the cost is to much and just let him die? Just because i am black does that mean that i have to agree with everything obama says and does? Do i still have first amendment rights to petition the government? Do i have to now use my hard earned money to pay for abortions which i am against in this new health care bill? Blackgenocide.org

Re: http://www.thenewblackwoman.com/2009/08/why-am-i-not-entitled.html

Actually the government has exempted themselves from this government health care plan that they are trying to ram down our throats. Our health care system is the best in the world why change it? The government healthcare bill would put everyone in a giant government database and people would lose there second amendment rights if they told a doctor for instance they were stressed out. Cuba has a 34% higher infant mortality rate than the US and cuba has a 44% higher rate of women dying of child birth than the US, canada has a 16% higher death rate fron cancer than the US, where am i getting these statistics american medical association. All of these countries have that wonderful government health care system. Communism takes place little by little it does not happen all at once, a little here a little there and you wake up and you have no freedom, what is the difference between communism and the democratic party, the democrats want your guns, free speech and religion there is no difference!

Re: http://www.thenewblackwoman.com/2009/07/my-take-on-attacks-on-judge-sotomayor.html

I do not think that sonya would be a good judge on the supreme court based on the fact that she is anti second amendment, she stated that state right surpass the bill of rights as if states are not in the USA. The second amendment was used in the civil rights movement in the deep south to protect the first amendment by the deacons for defense, second amendment rights protect against large scale genocide and tyranny example rwanda, uganda, sudan, turkey, nigeria, russia, germany, and so on.
