in McCain and Lobbyists -- Political Wire on Political Wire
There's no mystery at all. Simple explanation: McCain has no integrity.
He "claims to be the enemy of powerful lobbyists and special interests", but he's not.
Doesn't take too much tea-leaf reading or deep political insight to figure that out.

Anyone remember the "It's time to bomb Saddam!" flash video? Gosh, I forget where I found it... it was years ago...

I think that's "We are all Georgians now".
Last time a major power attacked "our" soil, it was a day that would live in infamy and we declared war. So is that "straight talk" ... or is it bombastic rhetoric encouraging those Georgians who thought we would back them up if the Russians came down on them?
Sounds like bombastic rhetoric fanning the flames of conflict to me.

Oh, and Ohio has just implemented a same day registration/voting law which probably will increase Dem numbers by a significant amount. If this law stays in effect, I expect Ohio will be in Obama's camp in November due to many college students being able to register and vote the same day.

ElectoralVote.com has perhaps the best assessment of what the polls really mean. It's all about electoral votes and, based on polls right now, Obama is winning.

in Warner Would Not Submit to Vetting -- Political Wire on Political Wire
Warner will be better as a VA senator, anyway. He and Webb are critical to keeping both of that state's senate seats in the Blue column.
And right now, the Dems really need to widen their margin in the House and Senate in order to move forward their legislative agenda. There is effectively no workable Dem majority in the Senate, since they only have 50, plus Lieberman. With a 55+ margin in the Senate, for example, there's some version of universal health care will become a reality. Warner and Webb are key to that.

in Is it Really a Close Race? -- Political Wire on Political Wire
As far as the media punditry goes, one of the most teeth-grindingly tedious things on television is the multi-pundit panel.
It's absurd when MSNBC flings four pundits on screen in tiny boxes, each getting a 30-second window to make some insipid observation that has already been made a hundred times before, and better, in online blogs.
The worst example of this, though, is CNN's election night analysis, where they have not one, but TWO panels, one sitting behind the other, plus the interviewer, plus Wolf Blitzer, plus Schnieder and Soledad Obrien to do breakdowns of stats, plus somebody on the big-screen map. Honestly, do you need more than four people to handle all that? Does Soledad Obrien really have to stand next to Schneider when he reads the stats on exit polls? Do we really need TWO rows of pundits?
It'd be really nice to see them dump most of the pundits in favor of a few reporters who would actually investigate, analyze and report their conclusions, like Cronkite used to do, rather than just having a surfeit of people giving their opinions and a "neutral" interviewer that allows all opinions equal weight.

Incredible.
And so the media narrative shifts from "Obama is a flip-flopper" to "Obama is too consistent" in 0.031 seconds.
Useless punditry.

in Clinton Asks to Keep Campaign Donations -- Political Wire on Political Wire
Why not? It was obvious to anyone paying attention that most of her fundraising for her '06 Senate run was intended to bankroll her shift to the presidential campaign only a few months later. Despite her repeated response that she was "only focused on the Senate race", everyone knew she was lying then.
Seems only reasonable that the donations she received for the presidential campaign should be rolled over into her Senate warchest. Whatever it takes to keep that money.

It's not as if she'd be using it for anything other than running for office--in this case, an office she already holds, and clearly thinks she might like to continue holding.
It would be a lot of trouble and expense to return the money, just to ask for it all over again.
As long as she seriously intends to run for reelection to the Senate, I don't see the problem here.
I'd vote for her. Again.

Good! The Senate is where Webb belongs, anyway. He and Warner will make both of Virginia's Senate seats Dem.
There are others Obama could choose as a Veep that wouldn't open a Senate seat to contention.

in GOP Hopes to Use Obama's Words (and Voice) Against Him -- Political Wire on Political Wire
The Obama campaign needs to run 5-minute ads composed of nothing but YouTube snippets of McCain saying one thing, then another on every key issue of the past five years.
If anyone has to worry about their words being used against them, it's McCain., who now is working on a record number of flip-flops
