I've also been homeschooling for 14 years, and both my husband and I work from home now. Over the years, he's worked at home off and on, and I've always been home.

Biggest thing to remember is you're not teaching so much as tutoring and helping them learn on their own. Find a curriculum that needs little input from you. Remember it's okay to switch whatever you start using - you're not tied to it forever! not even for the whole school year.

Also, you will *not* screw up your kids. You have to try really hard to manage that. :)

I must say I'm kind of appalled she suggested that you make sure your kids learn how to get along with other kids...

Ah, but in the knowledge-based industry, if you are constantly looking up the same things, then they aren't sticking in your mind. maybe the person isn't invested in "remembering" it, maybe it's something not used enough. Like Stephen said above me - if you are constantly using the fundamentals, you won't need practice.

I can even give a good example: I am constantly looking up how to create horizontal menus via CSS. Sure, it's relatively easy once you read the code and understand. But a part of me doesn't want to remember or something, as it is easier to just copy and paste the code I need and make adjustments.

Then again, it's something I use only occasionally. It's not like I'm always looking up how to style links.

I'm not sure how much you can memorize. unless by repetition it sticks and become rote. Is it the fact I do it over and over what makes me remember it? interesting. :)

You know, I run a WPMU installation, and the amount of work they've done to wp.com to do that is... scary actually. And rather useless in the end, like you said.
They seem to cater far too much to a small handful, and ignore a lot from the community, which is really sad.

To me, it smacks too much of taking advantage of wp.com users who don't know any better, really. First, they charge them to do pretty much anything useful, and if you can't be bothered to learn a bit of CSS (which isn't that hard, really) they are going to charge you again.
If it were me, and I was in that sort of position, I'd be pissed.
Not to mention it doesn't take much of a leap to realize that cost-wise, you could set up the standalone wp if you're willing to learn it. Or heck, jump ship to blogspot.

Yeah, I'm left handed and so is my husband. 3 of our 4 children are *right* handed. Although one of thsoe sometimes uses her left because our computers are set up lefthanded.

Doesn't Bad Behaviour stop most spam before it gets processed? that's how I thought it worked. Haven't tried it much; just going by what a few users have said.

SpamKarma2 is also quite good, and while it does process everything, it gives you numbers. :) And inserts a foot saying how many it snagged.

I'm also currently trying out a trifecta of smaller spam-stoppers on a medium-sized WPMU install.

Heh, well I do tend to pick descriptive names. My personal blog, atypicalife.net, says it all as well. I do use a tagline there sometimes, depending on where we are and what we're doing.

The domain itself leaves one wondering where the spaces are: are we a typical life, or atypical life? The tagline there, again sort of pulls people in a little more. When my oldest was prepping and leaving for college, the tagline reflected that, and recently when we moved to the country, I changed the tagline to match.

Actually, I can't remember what that one says now and I think the theme I recently switched to doesn't have a tagline on it.

And running a few blogs for a while, and a blog network, the name & tagline are handy if you keep changing themes. Without it, people aren't sure if they're on the same site. :D

I think it depends. I mean, I'm kind of in the same place you are - maybe I'm too nice. I have helped out a bit on political sites and personal sites with content I disagree with. I guess it depends on how much I disagree with the content and if the person behind it is offensive.

I also try to be as helpful as possible, so overall I'd have to say yes, unless they give me a strong and compelling reason to feel otherwise.

I would, and have, help out others who are a differing religion or sexual orientation.

Now that I think of it, I did turn down an offer to work to work on an anti-abortion site, mostly because I really disagreed with the focus that the campaign was taking on the website & in the media.

Funnily enough, in WordpressMU, the install process writes the config file. If you try and edit it beforehand, like the single user version, you'll screw it up.

On my two regualr public blogs, there's only enough themes to show on one screen.

But on my development installs, and on my WPMU installs? Well, one of those has a couple hundred, and that was *after* I moved some themes I didn't need to play with any more. :D Even if I kept one install down to just themes I'm working on, there's still quite a bit to wade through.

A search for themes would be nice - also, why would the themes show what they are tagged with, if they weren't planning on some way to use that function?

last spring, I think it was, there was a gunman on campus at one of the US's universities. Some of the people I follow were there, and they used twitter back and forth, silently, so they could hide, get out of the way, and find exits.

I think in this case maybe only one person was shot? Or maybe none. It was very little anyway.

Actually, TweetDeck, once you learn to use it, can get you through the highlights of Twitter pretty darn quickly. The key is to *group* the people you follow.

I turn TweetDeck off when I'm working, and on a break, I check out (as in quickly skim) just the groups of people I really need to. (work-related, close friends)

WordpressMU makes an excellent base for a blog networks if you want a *series* of blogs on one site. Picture each author with their own blog on your network, rather than an author section. :D

And many of the standard plugins for regualr wordpress work in MU (you do have to check though). The added bonus is that MU can do things easily that is a bit of work in regular wordpress.

The only downside is that MU is server software and you have to either know what you're doing to get it set up, or have someone knowledgeable do it for you.

But if you think big, MU is perfect. I wrote a post here you might find interesting:

Read Facebook's Terms of Service - whatever you upload to their site becomes *their* data. And by signing up and clicking "yes I agree" you, well, agree to it.

Do I think it's wrong and it sucks? Yes. But they've covered their ass well. If it's their data, they can do what they like with it.

I haven;t signed up and I'm not going to. If people cannot be bothered to find and connect with me via any other means than Facebook, well I don't know what to tell them. (They certainly aren't friends.)

I think both of the WP default themes were kinda ugly. I think they should included just a plain, easily adjustable one.

You have to turn off the Rich Text Editor, which will make it easier.
Then you have the tinker with the URL. When you embed the link, you have to change this part:

to more like this:

There's a checkbox in the backend under Options -> Discusion. the headign says "Email me whenever:" uncheck the box that says "Anyone posts a comment".

This is also a really good post on how to troubleshoot the problem. :)

I had an issue where upon submitting a comment, most of the blog comment would disappear.

Turns out the sidebars had a negative margin & padding issue to force them the full length of the screen, and after leaving a comment, this forced the content "up" a few thousand pixels.

Ture, users can't install plugins. :D This is for reasonable security measure,s but since the current WP has API to see when plugins need updating, I'm sure at some point you probably *could* make it so a user can install a plugin internally from a trusted source.

Thinking about it, now *that* would be cool... Ever work with SMF? It does something similar. Mostly, I try to anticipate what a user would want and install the plugin for them and they can activate or deactivate it as they wish. On one site I run, users have been known to request specific plugins, and if they work, everyone's happy.

I don't see you as being too negative, I worry I might be doing the same. :D

The m ore I look at all of these ideas, the more I see that anything really *is* possible - we just need someone to code it. :D
