in Sharing presentations is fun — really on Mathew's comments
I love slideshare. Actually I think from a global creative collaboration perspective it's probably my favorite site to get insights from those that work in my industry.

mndoci I definitely use slideshare as a learning resource, especially for marketing and dev related material

mathewi I know others would probably agree Leigh -- and in fact, your interest
in SlideShare was one of the things that got me interested in it and
made me want to write about it.

in Online fiction, Facebook and transparency on Mathew's comments
To repeat what comments I made directly onto Eden's post...I think as marketers our job is creating fiction every day. Dove = self esteem . Yeah sure 'tever.

I think this entire thing is over the top. We shouldn't be applying notions of corporate transparency and that type of misrepresentation (walmart flog etc.) to an art project. They aren't even close to the same thing.

Oh well, at the very least, one can say the experiment did it's job. Art after all, is not only meant to match your furniture, its larger role is social change and commentary. Whether you like it or hate it, the fact that it made you think makes it in my mind a resounding success.

in Twitter: more mainstream than it looks on Mathew's comments
And I would say even worse, kids think Twitter is the older persons communication method.....that to me creates huge limitations for it going into the future.

mathewi That's why I think Twitter needs to be part of something larger --
something that offers traditional IM-type features, text messaging to
mobiles, Facebook status updates, etc. It's dumb to have to use three
separate tools to do all of that. It's like having to use a separate
phone for long-distance calls.

in Bitchmeme: Do blogs deserve advertising? on Mathew's comments
uh huh. I take the point on advertising however, monetization does not only = advertising. Let's look at some marketing math shall we?

Louis Gray = tech flavour of the month = popularity = people want to know him = gets into the tech "it" crowd = they invite him to conferences, lunches, blog funny anecdotes about their fun meet ups etc. = job offers, board of director offers = more conference speaking gigs = increase in personal brand value...and eventually = increase in money.

in Shyftr: Feed theft or social news reader? on Mathew's comments
Interesting though if you think about it, there are how many posts on Techmeme on this subject?.... but really, no one place to aggregate the conversation. It's one conversation conceptually but it's happening on 8 different blogs. A service that can bring those together in one? What's not to like about that....

in Can OpenX compete with Google? on Mathew's comments
A lot of ad serving companies are concerned over Google cutting them out of the middle (since most media sites and agencies use doubleclick anyhow).

I think Open X has huge potential to be successful........

in Loren Feldman vs. Shel Israel on Mathew's comments
I think Shel's just lucky that he's not famous enough to get on late night TV. I can just see a skit on the Daily Show with one of the reporters going and doing an interview with Shel, puppet in hand. Ah, see what happens when you hit the big times? :)

in Why do we like to collect music? on Mathew's comments
Besides how would my 7 year old at the time be able to ask me about my really big CD collection and get into Jimmy Hendrix if not for music hoarding?

in Something Important Is On The Horizon In The Music Business on A VC
Radio has always had its place and while this might be the evolution of radio, i have doubts of it being the 'future' of music.

In the words of Gil Scott Heron, "the revolution will not be televised. The revolution will be live."

(Jay Z Live Nation deal anyone?)

in Open Source Product Management: Which Call To Action Is Clearer on AdaptiveBlue
it must be bc i'm pissed off still at the airport (two more flights canceled) but it took me way to long to even see where you put the call to action on either one (and i used to be great at those kids games in the newspapers).

You have enough space to write "grab this widget" where it says Powered by Adaptive Blue ;-)
Max Definitely "grab this". "Widget menu" sounds like something that would be used by the site's administrator, not a visitor. "Grab this" or "Grab This Widget" (or simply "Take Me!" if you want to be coy) clearly speaks to the visitor about a specific action THEY might want to perform.

On a side note, I think the placement of the link itself is very problematic. I kid you not, it took me (someone not intimately familiar with AB's product) a good 45 seconds to spot the actual difference between the two versions that you posted! That's not a good thing - most people won't spend that long looking for your link.

in Which is worse: piracy or anonymity? on Mathew's comments
Yeah, not getting this one. Anyone I know in the publishing industry has said that their sales are not being impacted at all by the Web and that they simply aren't seeing the same issues as the music industry. People (and that includes kids) seem to generally still want artifacts when it comes to reading.

mathewi Totally agree, Leigh -- seems to me that books are a lot less
threatened because there's still that desire to hold an object, and
there's no iPod for books (yet).

in TED: These sour grapes taste terrible on Mathew's comments
Kate (of iamkate) asked me if i was going and I said no, having not realized that in fact, one had to be "invited". Technology circles continue to remind me of grade 7. Sigh. If I could only go the super cool party of popular girl A or B.

Oh and Mathew, I'm sure Paul could pull a few strings for you and get you a ticket. Personally, I'd rather put up with the financial elitism of IDEAS city where as long as you can pay, you can play, here in the great white north :)

in Thoughts on New Hamphsire on A VC
In dec last year, I was in NYC for business and my husband similarly was in Atlanta. Both of us ended up having political temperature check discussions with our African American cab drivers. What we found interesting was that both of them were voting for Hilary. Actually, that's not true. Even more fascinating, was that both were actually voting for Bill AND Hilary and both said the exact same thing only in slight different ways...

America is in big trouble. We don't need a rookie. Obama = Rookie / Hilary = Hilary AND Bill and Bill = successful presidency = prosperous America

So looks like at least Hilary's got the North and South African American cab driver votes wrapped up.

100 people. No wonder you are a tumblr award winner.....

in Facebook bows to the Beacon haters on Mathew's comments
I guess too many of my friends are social justice lawyers who work with people all the time who get screwed by this type of transient information. Seriously the stories I have heard would blog (ha, Freudian slip) your mind. And it goes on all the time.

But sure, for most of us tech writers, rich guys in NYC, doctors, digital executives, etc. - chances are we'll probably be just fine. Can't imagine my shopping habits will have anyone thinking very much other than I have great taste. ;-)

p.s if you keep disagreeing with me I'll make you buy lunch
